Major-General Thomas Hardwicke (1755-1835), British naturalist. Hardwicke served in the army of the British East India Company from 1778 to 1823, becoming Major-General in 1819. During this time, he collected numerous animal specimens and drawings. On his return he published 'Illustrations of Indian Zoology' (1830–35). He was elected Fellow of the Linnean Society (1804) and Fellow of the Royal Society (1813). His collection of 4500 illustrations is held by the Natural History Museum, London, UK. William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865) was an English botanist, writer and artist. He was Regius Professor of Botany at Glasgow University, and editor of Curtis' "Botanical Magazine" from 1827 to 1865. In 1841, he was appointed director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, and was succeeded by his son Joseph Dalton. Hooker documented the fern and orchid crazes that shook England in the mid-19th century in books such as "Species Filicum" (1846) and "A Century of Orchidaceous Plants" (1849). A gifted botanical artist himself, he wrote and illustrated "Flora Exotica" (1823) and several volumes of the "Botanical Magazine" after 1827.

Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold (February 17, 1796 – October 18, 1866) was a German physician and traveller. He was the first European to teach Western medicine in Japan. He obtained recognition for his study of Japanese flora and fauna. He arrived at Dejima Island in 1823 and stayed in Japan until 1829 when he was expelled for obtaining maps of parts of the country, and act forbidden by the Tokugawa administration.
