Pierre Jules Cesar Janssen (1824-1907), French astronomer, most commonly known as Jules Janssen. Janssen, along with Lockyer, discovered helium in 1868 by making spectrographic observations of the Sun. He also discovered the gaseous nature of solar prominences, and made numerous eclipse observations. He worked to establish an observatory on the summit of Mount Blanc, realising that the height would decrease atmospheric distortions. He was awarded the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society in 1876. Craters on the Moon and Mars are named in his honour. Illustration from Album Mariani, Paris (1901).

The work gained Bowditch a reputation as the founder of modern maritime navigation.

    RM 148739739

Underground oil deposit, historical artwork. Shafts have been sunk from the surface to extract (from left to right): water, oil and natural gas. The labels are in French. Oil is a fossil fuel, rich in hydrocarbons, which forms from organic remains. Over millions of years, layers of sediment build up on top of layers of organic detritus on a seabed, compressing it and heating it until it turns into oil. The oil filters upwards and collects in pockets in the rock from where it is mined. Artwork from the third edition of 'Les Entrailles de la Terre' (1902) by French author Eugene Caustier.

Plaster cast of dog from Pompeii, historical artwork. The Roman city of Pompeii, located in the Bay of Naples, Italy, was ruined and buried under thick layers of ash during an eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 AD. Many were killed by falling buildings or other causes, such as poisonous fumes. The city was rediscovered and excavated in the 18th and 19th centuries, revealing much about the Roman way of life. The remains and impressions of over 1000 victims have been found within the ash deposits, along with animal remains. Artwork from the third edition of 'Les Entrailles de la Terre' (1902) by French author Eugene Caustier.

Torricelli invents the barometer. In 1643 the Italian physicist Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647) constructed a tube that was sealed at the top, around a metre long, and filled with mercury. He then upended it in a bowl of mercury, and observed that the resulting column fluctuated with atmospheric pressure. This artwork is from a series of illustrated French encyclopedia volumes, published by the Epinal printing firm in the late 19th and early 20th century. The series was called 'Serie encyclopedique des lecons de choses illustrees' (Encyclopedic series of object lessons illustrated), and this example is from a volume published in around 1900.

Diamond mine workers, historical artwork. Guards at a diamond mine securing the hands of workers during a break to prevent them stealing diamonds. This mine is in the Cape Colony, part of the area that is now South Africa. Slavery was abolished in the Cape Colony in 1834, and manual labour was carried out largely by the local population for seasonal wages. Diamond mining prompted large migration, and restrictive laws were passed to control the workforce. This laid the basis for what became apartheid. Egg chemical reaction. The reaction uses hydrochloric acid which reacts with the calcium carbonate in the egg shell to produce the white foam seen here (due to the carbon dioxide produced). This gives rise to the name given to this party trick of 'snowy egg'. Eventually, the shell is completely removed by the acid, and the egg protein albumin turns white as it is denatured. Dodo (Raphus cucullatus), 19th-century artwork. Roughly the size of a swan, the dodo was heavily-built and flightless. It was found on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and became extinct around 1681 following the arrival of humans. Its appearance is known only from contemporary sketches and artworks, as no intact skins survive. This artwork, based on a larger 1626 work by Dutch painter Roelant Savery (1576-1639), was published in 'The Dodo and its Kindred' (1848) by Strickland and Melville. The original, held in the Royal Gallery at Berlin, Germany, depicts Eden and the story of the Fall of Adam.
