Underground oil deposit, historical artwork. Shafts have been sunk from the surface to extract (from left to right): water, oil and natural gas. The labels are in French. Oil is a fossil fuel, rich in hydrocarbons, which forms from organic remains. Over millions of years, layers of sediment build up on top of layers of organic detritus on a seabed, compressing it and heating it until it turns into oil. The oil filters upwards and collects in pockets in the rock from where it is mined. Artwork from the third edition of 'Les Entrailles de la Terre' (1902) by French author Eugene Caustier.

Plaster cast of dog from Pompeii, historical artwork. The Roman city of Pompeii, located in the Bay of Naples, Italy, was ruined and buried under thick layers of ash during an eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 AD. Many were killed by falling buildings or other causes, such as poisonous fumes. The city was rediscovered and excavated in the 18th and 19th centuries, revealing much about the Roman way of life. The remains and impressions of over 1000 victims have been found within the ash deposits, along with animal remains. Diamond mine workers, historical artwork. Guards at a diamond mine securing the hands of workers during a break to prevent them stealing diamonds. This mine is in the Cape Colony, part of the area that is now South Africa. Slavery was abolished in the Cape Colony in 1834, and manual labour was carried out largely by the local population for seasonal wages. Diamond mining prompted large migration, and restrictive laws were passed to control the workforce. This laid the basis for what became apartheid. Artwork from the third edition of 'Les Entrailles de la Terre' (1902) by French author Eugene Caustier.

Egg chemical reaction. The reaction uses hydrochloric acid which reacts with the calcium carbonate in the egg shell to produce the white foam seen here (due to the carbon dioxide produced). This gives rise to the name given to this party trick of 'snowy egg'. Eventually, the shell is completely removed by the acid, and the egg protein albumin turns white as it is denatured. Artwork from the eighth volume (second period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
