A votive relief in clay to Asclepius by Cutius from Gaul in return for restoring his hearing. (1st century AD). In the Greco-Roman world, where it was believed that some gods were responsible for ill-heath, the sick and their families appealed for help to Asclepius, the most famous god of healing. His major sanctuary was at Epidaurus and, in Rome, the Asklepeion Sanctuary on the island of Tiburina in the Tiber. Here there were facilities for the treatment of illnesses. The sick and their families came to the temple with their votive offerings either in gratitude or in supplication, often in the form of a small replica of a body part. Many anatomical votives have been discovered on the Tiburina island.

Plague victims, 16th-century illustration. Dead and dying livestock and people are being examined in the street and by torchlight. The scene is captioned in Latin, with the quote at lower centre from Virgil's Aeneid (Book Three). It translates as: 'They relinquished sweet life, or dragged their sick limbs around'. At upper left, two female figures care for a man on his sickbed, with the Latin words in the beam of light referring to sacred Phyrgian deities. This illustration is thought to be by Italian artist Marcantonio Raimondi, after Raphael, and dates from around 1515. Photo by METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

Gout and the Spider. Artwork illustrating the fable of Gout and the Spider, as told by the French poet and author Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695). This fable (number 8, book 3) appeared in the collection published in 1668. The fable tells how gout (a condition caused by uric acid crystals in the joints) affects wealthy people (man on bed with gout of the foot) rather than poor people. In contrast, the spider finds that it prospers best when lodging with poor people. Artwork from the German book 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).

Bubonic plague quarantine site. 16th-century artwork of a quarantine site set up to help prevent the spread of the Black Death (bubonic plague) in Sicily during an outbreak in the period 1575-6. Black Death outbreaks affected Europe from the 1340s to the 1700s. It is thought to have been bubonic plague, caused by the Yersinia pestis bacterium and spread by fleas on rats. Millions died across Europe, but Sicily's Chief Physician Giovanni Filippo Ingrassia (1510-1580) put in place measures such as quarantine and improved public hygiene, measures that helped contain the outbreak in Sicily. Artwork from Ingrassia's book 'Informatione del pestifero' (1576).

Athanasius Kircher, Jesuit scholar 1602-1680. Coloured portrait after an engraving of the author from Mundus Subterraneus (1664). Kircher worked and published across a remarkable range of fields, and won worldwide fame as a scholar even in his own lifetime. His great museum of naturalia in Rome was unrivalled. In Mundus Subterraneus he considered fossils, volcanoes and the earth's geologic structure, as well as everything from dragons to giants. He believed fossils could be mineralised organic remains, but that also many simply formed inside stones due to an active 'plastic spirit' that gave shape to things. He was also one of the first to observe microbes through a microscope and propose that plague (Yersinia pestis) was caused by infectious microorganisms in the blood. This insight made him among the first to suggest sensible measures to counter the spread of the dread disease.

Over 100,000 people are thought to have died. Artwork from 'L'Idea di un Principe ed Eroe Cristiano in Francesco I d'Este, di Modena e Reggio Duca VIII', a series of prints that illustrated Francesco I d'Este's life as a ruler and in daily life. The Hypochondriac. Satirical artwork showing a female patient (centre) suffering from hypochondria, a mental condition where a patient over-reacts to physical symptoms that may be harmless, and thinks they are seriously ill. At left, various thoughts plague her, while at right she attempts to explain her symptoms to a doctor. This artwork, by the English caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), was published in London in 1792. This copy is from the German book 'Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin' (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932).

Influenza news article, January 1916. The title of this article refers to 'La Grippe', a term used at the time for influenza. Outbreaks of this viral disease often occur during winter, with the young, elderly and immunocompromised particularly at risk. Influenza vaccines were developed in the 1940s and first used in the Second World War. This article was published in 'The Ogden Standard' (Ogden, Utah, USA) on 29 January 1916, during the First World War. Two years later, the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic devastated millions. It occurred in several waves between 1918 and 1920, infected one fifth of the world population and killed between 20 and 50 million.
