19世紀 イギリスの紡織工場の風景
View of New Lanark. Lithograph; 19th century. New Lanark is a small 18th-century village set in a sublime Scottish landscape where the philanthropist and Utopian idealist Robert Owen (1771-1858) moulded a model industrial community in the early 19th century. The imposing cotton mill buildings, the spacious and well-designed workers' housing, and the dignified educational institute and school still testify to Owen's humanism. Credit: Erich Lessing / Album

Opium factory in India. 19th-century artwork of workers stacking opium balls for the British East India Company in Patna, Bengal. The 1.5-kilogram balls of raw opium, wrapped in the leaves of the opium poppy, were dried on shelves and shipped to China and Europe. During the 19th century, the British gained much wealth from opium traded between India and China. Campaigns against the drug led to a Royal Commission in the 1890s which backed the trade. Artwork from 'The Truth about Opium Smoking' in the 24 June 1882 issue of the British weekly illustrated newspaper 'The Graphic'. The original artwork, by W. S. Sherwill, dates from circa 1850.

Niagara water mills. Early 20th-century photochrom (photographic lithograph) of the water mills in Niagara Mill District, drawing power from water diverted from Niagara Falls, on the US-Canada border. These mills are on the US shore. The Niagara Falls Hydraulic Power and Manufacturing Company constructed a canal that diverted water to a reservoir that was used by the mills shown here. The water pouring down the cliffs (the tailrace) has been used to power the various industries in the mills. By 1900, the area had over 260 factories and mills. This photochrom is from the Detroit Publishing Company.
