Rotwang is the villain of this dystopian science fiction story that is set in the future. He kidnaps Maria and uses his machine to transform a robot into her double. This false Maria is eventually discovered and the real Maria escapes and Rotwang is defeated. This film was part of the German Expressionism movement. This pioneering work is regarded as the first feature length science fiction film, and was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2001.
