Captain James Cook (1728-1779), British explorer. After joining the Royal Navy, Cook undertook his first major voyage from 1768-71, accurately mapping New Zealand's coastline and making the first European landing in east Australia. During 1772-75 he crossed the Antarctic Circle for the first time. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1775. On his third voyage from 1776-79 he was killed in a dispute with a group of Hawaiian islanders. This artwork was published in 1777 opposite the title page to 'A voyage towards the South Pole and round the World' by Captain James Cook.

This artwork was published in an account of the voyages of the British captain and explorer James Cook (1728-1779). Cook visited Tahiti on each of his three voyages. On his first voyage he arrived there in 1769 to observe a transit of Venus. On his second voyage, he resupplied at Tahiti twice in 1773 and 1774 while exploring the Antarctic. On his third voyage, he visited Tahiti in 1777 before heading into the northern Pacific where he discovered the Hawaiian Islands.

Tahiti. View of the island of Otaheite (Tahiti) as seen by approaching Western explorers. First Western contact with Tahiti was in 1767 and the islands were visited by Cook in 1769. The arrival of Westerners was a disaster for the native Tahitians - by the end of the century 96% had been killed through diseases such as smallpox, typhus, influenza and venereal disease. William Bligh (1754-1817), British naval officer and captain of the ship HMS Bounty. Bligh's crew mutinied in 1787 on a voyage to collect breadfruit trees in Tahiti for introduction to the West Indies. Bligh and 18 men, cast adrift in a small boat with few provisions and no chart, successfully navigated 5400 kilometres to Timor. On a second voyage Bligh successfully collected and delivered the breadfruit. He also explored Tasmania and Fiji, and in 1801 was elected Fellow of the Royal Society for his services to navigation and botany. Engraving by John Conde of a portrait by English painter John Russell (1745-1806), published in Bligh's 1792 account of the mutiny.
