'The Fighting Temeraire', 1839. The 98-gun ship 'Temeraire' became known as the 'Fighting Temeraire' after its role in Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The ship remained in service until 1838 when she was decommissioned. The painting was thought to represent the decline of Britain's naval power. This mosaic, a memento mori ('remember you will die'), uses symbols to covey its message. The builder's level (libella) supports a plumb-bob symbolising death (a skull), below which is a butterfly (the soul) balanced on a wheel (fortune). Balanced from the level are symbols of poverty (right) and wealth (left). This mosaic is displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy.

Indian marble inlay, (1898). 'Figs 1 to 9: Marble marquetry from the mausoleums of the Shah Jehan and the Begum Mumtaz-i-Mahal...It is to the [17th century] that the marble-marquetries from the Mogul tombs at Agra belong...These artistically furnished mausoleums were built with white marble, whilst all prominent architectural parts of the structure were ornamented with manifold colored stones, such as jasper, heliotrope, chalcedony, agate etc. Every curved line, every closed bud and opening flower we find represented with a sweet regard to the beauties of nature and besides this all is in thorough harmony with those venerable mosaic technics [techniques]'. 'Scotland for Ever'; the charge of the Scots Greys at Waterloo, 18 June 1815. The attack by the Royal Scots Greys cavalry regiment on the French 45th infantry was immortalised in this famous painting of 1881 by Lady Elizabeth Butler (1846-1933). The wife of a general as well as a popular Victorian painter, she persuaded the commander of the regiment to reconstruct the charge so she could make the painting. Some military historians doubt that the action actually took the form of the spectacular headlong charge depicted in the picture. What is known however is that the Scots Greys overpursued the French infantry, became split into disorganised small groups, and suffered heavy casualties at the hands of French cavalry formations before they were able to regain the British lines.

X-rays and death, conceptual artwork. This artwork, titled 'The Physician of the X-rays', by Austrian artist Ivo Saliger (1894-1987), dates from between 1920 and 1940. It shows a radiologist using X-rays to repel Death (left), who is personified as a skeleton wearing a shroud. Lying on the couch is the partially clothed female patient being saved by this diagnostic technique. X-rays were discovered by German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895, work for which he received the 1901 Nobel Prize in Physics. Saliger, a contemporary of Adolf Hitler, became professor of art at the Academy of Vienna in 1920.
