Around a third of Belgrade, a city of 1.6 million, has no connection to drainage systems and instead relies on the septic tanks that the trucks empty straight into the rivers. Wild elephants scavenge for food at an open landfill in Pallakkadu village in Ampara district, about 210 kilometers (130 miles) east of the capital Colombo, Sri Lanka, Jan. 6, 2022. Conservationists and veterinarians are warning that plastic waste in the open landfill in eastern Sri Lanka is killing elephants in the region, after two more were found dead over the weekend. Around 20 elephants have died over the last eight years after consuming plastic trash in the dump. Examinations of the dead animals showed they had swallowed large amounts of nondegradable plastic that is found in the garbage dump, wildlife veterinarian Nihal Pushpakumara said. モロッコ ロバとプラスチックごみ

Donkey grazing among plastic in Morocco. See SWNS story SWBRiwad. Millions of working animals around the world are set to die in the coming decade due to drought, natural disasters and environmental catastrophes, experts have warned. More than 200 million working animals – such as horses, donkeys, camels, oxen and elephants – currently support the livelihoods of at least 600 million people in the world’s poorest communities. But flooding, cyclones and wildfires are having a devastating – and worsening – impact on working animals and the families they support in low-income countries worldwide. Official figures in India estimate 17,000 animals (including oxen and buffaloes) were killed by cyclones across the country in 2020, and nearly one million cattle are thought to be lost to flooding every year.

07 April 2021, Bolivia, Oruro: Dogs walk among garbage at Lake Uru Uru. According to the environmental agency of the government of Oruro, the lake is polluted on 15 hectares with an estimated 30,000 tons of waste. "The sewer system for rainwater is being used illegally for sewage," explains Sara Diaz of the environmental agency. Most of the waste covering Lake Uru Uru is plastic bottles. "People who travel through this region throw the bottles through their car windows," she adds. The Center for the Environment and Andean Peoples (CEPA) also points to a more pervasive problem: "Some of the acid mine water from the San Jose mine ends up directly in the lake," the non-governmental organization's latest report says. Among other things, cadmium, arsenic oxide and lead have been detected above the limit at the lake, it says. The government and civic organizations have regularly called for cleanup efforts at the lake for years, "but the acidic mine water is not sufficiently treated," CEPA said. The concern is heightened by the fact that the lake has shrunk from 200 to 30 square kilometres due to the current drought, laments CEPA's Limbert Sanchez. Photo: Radoslaw Czajkowski/dpa

The pack of wild dogs - or 'painted wolves' as they are sometimes called - turned to the empty sports drink bottle for fun after hunting down and eating two impala on the plains of the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Every year during the wet season, from December to February, trash by the ton washes ashore in the south of the island of Bali. During this time famous beaches for tourists like Kuta and Jimbaran are all covered with plastic trashes. It has been piling up on Bali, fueled by a lack of infrastructure or an official plan to deal with it. Also contributing to bottle and bag were strewn beaches are ingrained cultural practices, and a lack of awareness about the lifecycle of plastic from the disposal, to sea, to washing up on beaches as trash. To cope with this plastic problem there are some people in the effort like ecoBali and Sungai Watch. EcoBali is a company focusing on waste management meanwhile Sungai Watch is a community focusing on river cleanup, they installed a DIY trash catcher on the river to catch trashes before arriving on the beach.
