史上初の衆参ダブル選となった第３６回衆院選挙と第１２回参院選挙は６月２２日、全国で一斉に投票が行われ、有権者の関心も高かった。東京地方は好天に恵まれ、選挙日和であったが、若者にとっては絶好の行楽サンデーでもあった。東京・原宿の歩行者天国では、竹の子族が繰り出し、いつもと変わらぬ光景が見られた。１９８０年６月２２日撮影。

大勢の見物人に「竹の子」たちは、ますますハッスルする。東京・代々木公園の歩行者天国。路上に置かれたラジカセから流れる強烈なサウンドに乗って、奇抜ないでたちのティーン・エイジャーたちが踊りの輪をつくり、ステップを踏む。そんなディスコダンスの竹の子族や、ロックンロールのアメグラ族の周囲は、散歩客や同世代の若者らでいっぱい、歩道橋の上まで鈴なりだ。彼らのほとんどは、原宿のファッション店街で衣装を買い揃えるという。竹の子族の「語源」といわれるブティック「竹の子」の主人、大竹竹則さんは「奇抜な衣装を着て、街頭で踊るのは、一種の気分転換。彼らにとって、それが最高の楽しみなんです。暴走族のように迷惑はかけないでしょう。温かく見守ってやりたいね」と話す。１９８０年５月３日撮影。５月４日朝刊・都民版「連休広場の主役たち」に掲載
