コンピュータの登場 ENIAC (撮影年月不明)
ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer). Technician changing a tube on ENIAC, an early electronic computer. ENIAC was designed and built in the 1940s by the University of Pennsylvania for the US Army's Ballistics Research Laboratory (BRL). The computer contained around 19,000 vacuum tubes, several of which burned out each day and had to be replaced. Some thought this problem rendered the computer useless, although the designers claimed the tubes were easily located and replaced. ENIAC solved ballistics calculations and other military problems.

コンピュータの登場 ENIAC (撮影年月不明)
ENIAC digital calculator. Technicians working with the ENIAC device, a digital calculator that was built at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, from 1943-46. ENIAC stands for Electronic Numeric Integrator And Calculator. Although not a true computer, it is considered the second general purpose electronic calculator (after the British COLOSSUS). Designed by John Atanasoff and John Mauchly, ENIAC was originally intended for use in ballistics calculations. The wiring was used to create circuits between ENIAC's 18,000 valves, thus changing its 'program'. A true computer uses an electronically-stored program. Photographed in the Ballistics Research Laboratory, building 328. The man at centre is Glen Beck.
