Birds from Serbia seen in Thailand enjoying warmer winter climes
Migratory birds from Serbia were seen perched on trees around an island in Thailand as they escaped from cool winter temperatures to enjoy the tropics. Soldiers found the feathered animals - including sandpipers and redshanks - hunting fish off Ko Libong Island in Trang province on Monday (Jan 18). Chaiyaprut Weerawong, head of Ko Libong Wildlife No Hunting Area Coordination Center, said the birds are taking refuge in the island until the cold season ends. He said: 'They are temporarily staying here where the weather is perfect for them to hunt. The birds are mostly from Siberia.' The environmentalist also encouraged tourists to visit the island so they can enjoy birdwatching while the animals are still in the country. He said: 'Seeing these birds are a special experience and they only come here seasonally so it will be great for tourists if they come and see them now.' Ko Libong island is a popular feeding area for birds as it has rich wildlife such as worms, shrimps, fish, and crabs that can sustain their food. Birds on the island including the sandpiper, lesser sand plover, greater sand plover, oriental plover, crab-plover, red knot, common redshank, dunlin, and bar-tailed godwit. The birds will stay in Koh Lubong until April before returning to Siberia in spring for the warmer season. ( Original Title: Birds from Serbia seen in Thailand enjoying warmer winter climes )

Buddhist temple uses recycled glass beer bottles to build its walls
A Buddhist monk is using recycled glass beer bottles to covers the walls and stairs of a temple. Abbot Phra Chotivaro mixes the crushed bottles of Singha and Chang with cement to do building work at the Wat Rai Dong temple, located in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand. The monk said that the finished surface has a naturally 'sparkling and clean appearance'. First, the recycled glass is cleaned and categorized by colour. Then it is burnt and dipped in water so that the glasses are easily fractured. After the process, the fractured glass is mixed with cement to be coated on the different areas of the temple. Finally, it is washed with water again. The effect is that the temple's ceiling sparkles in different colours especially when the sun shines on the surfaces. Phra Chotivaro said that he is still accepting donations from locals so he continue the work. He added: 'Other temples can use the same process. It's a good use for old glass.' Elephants given sweaters to keep warm in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Elephants were given special sweaters at a camp to keep them warm during cold spell in Thailand. The sweaters were customised to fit the jumbos' huge bodies in Maesa Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai province. Temperatures have plunged down to 13 degrees Celcius last week, making it dangerous for the older elephants' health. The sanctuary gave more sweaters to elephants aged 65 to 80-years-old to keep them extra warm. Aside from the sweaters, bonfires were also lit in several areas inside the camp so elephants would feel the heat from the flames. Anchalee Galmaji, manager of Maesa Elephant Camp, said they need to protect the animals' health during the cold season. She said: 'When elephants get sick, they will stop eating and drinking so it is important to keep them warm during this season.' The camp used to provide huge blankets to the elephants but they would fall off when they are walking. Some elephants were also irritated by the fabric as it would limit their movements. They would then shake the fabric blankets off their bodies. This time, staff measured the elephants' body size before making the sweaters so they would perfectly fit their bodies. A kind tailor donated the first pairs of sweaters to the camp which were given to seven elephants before the camp made more to provide to the other jumbos. State meteorologist Phuwiang Prakhammin said that winter will be colder and longer than previous years. He expected the cool season to last for approximately 122 days until mid-February, with average lows of 20C to 21C nationwide throughout the entire season, however, temperatures are much lower in northern parts of Thailand. Animals keep warm during cold spell at Khon Kaen zoo
Zookeepers have been finding ways to keep animals warm as temperatures plunge during a cold spell in Thailand. Footage shows the staff at the Khon Kaen zoo providing extra hay to enclosures to warm the chilly animals at the weekend. Thonachon Kensing, director of the zoo, said their animals are at increased risk of suffering from the cold weather as they are located near mountain forests. He said: 'The weather here is getting cold especially during the evenings when it can get cold as 9 degrees Celcius.' The zoo official added that temperatures drop to just two degrees Celsius on mountain peaks some days, so even the residents in the area should take care of their health. He said: 'The zoo has made several precautions to keep the animal habitats warmer as it is too cold in the night.' Aside from hay, orangutans were given blankets to cover themselves from the cold winds. Deers and other animals were always given fresh hay to sleep on instead of the cold concrete floors. For the younger animals, there are cradles made of hemp sack which helps to keep them warm while sleeping. Drone footage shows Bali's Kuta Beach buried in sea of plastic rubbish
Kuta Beach, a tourist hotspot in Kabupaten Badung, a regency of Bali, Indonesia, is being overwhelmed with tonnes of plastic garbage. Shocking drone footage from Sunday (January 17) shows the devastating level of plastic rubbish strewn across the overwhelmed beach. The flimer Ulfa Musriadi told Newsflare: "The moment was taken using a drone camera when officers cleaned the piles of trash in the sea and by the sea." Indonesia quake dead pulled from under rubble
Date:JANUARY 16, 2021 Rescuers were racing against time to search for survivors buried beneath rubble on Saturday (January 16), after a 6.2 magnitude quake rocked the Indonesia's island of Sulawesi and killed at least 46 people. Friday's (January 15) quake and its aftershocks damaged more than 400 homes and two hotels, as well as flattening a hospital and the office of a regional governor, where authorities told Reuters several people had been trapped. A nurse, identified as Muhammad Ardiansyah Muin, was pulled out from the rubble of Mitra Manakarra Hospital alive but died moments later due to serious injuries, witnesses said. Brief prayers were recited before his body was taken away. His mother Nur Samsiah said that he was on the ground floor of the building but couldn't run out in time for cover. More than 820 people were injured and about 15,000 people have been evacuated, official said. Data from the agency showed that Friday's quake was a thrust-fault quake, similar to the one in 1969 in West Sulawesi that triggered a tsunami and killed 64. Drone pilot Jon Mark Mahannah captured video of the frightening scene as Jet Skiers rode the waves near the outer reefs before a large swell comes in and throws them off their watercraft. Mahannah wrote in the YouTube caption that some waves were over 35 feet high. "The skis jetted for the horizon only to find themselves looking into the face of a clean-up," he said. According to reports, photographer Ryan Moss and professional surfer Cam Richards were riding together when they were hit by the enormous wave, with Moss suffering a fracture in his lower back. "I did the best I could do to keep us safe during the chaos and things just went wrong. I feel terrible for Ryan, but I know he is in good spirits and will be back stronger and better," Richards said. Speaking in an interview, Moss said, "I just remember feeling weightless and it taking a really long time to come down … There was no handle on the ski, so I couldn't stand up and hold on." Indonesian President urges people to 'stay calm' after quake kills 35
Date:JANUARY 15, 2021 EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: PART QUALITY AS INCOMING Indonesia President Joko Widodo urged people at disaster zones to 'stay calm' after a 6.2-magnitude quake rocked Sulawesi island, killing at least 35 people and injuring hundreds on Friday (January 15). The earthquake and aftershocks caused damage to more than 60 homes, two hotels, and destroyed the Mitra Manakarra Hospital and governor's office in Mamuju, where local authorities told Reuters several people remained trapped under the rubble. Jan Gelfand, International Federation of Red Cross' (IFRC) country head for Indonesia, said the pandemic was likely to complicate the distribution of aid in the relatively remote area as well as impact the victims psychologically. No tsunami warning was issued but the Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said aftershocks could follow, with a possibility that another powerful quake could trigger a tsunami. The quake struck 6 km (3.73 miles) northeast of the town of Majene, at the relatively shallow depth of 10 km, just before 1.30 a.m., sending thousands of frightened residents out of their homes and fleeing for higher ground.
