IRAQ: TOWERING BAGHDAD STATUE OF SADDAM HUSSEIN PULLED TO GROUND Date:APRIL 9, 2003 A towering statue of Saddam Hussein was pulled to the ground on Wednesday (April 9) in a symbolic act against the dictator's oppressive regime. Working together in the heart of Baghdad, US marines helped crowds of Iraqi men bring down the imposing monument on the day the city's population celebrated its liberation. The scenes were reminiscent of the fall of the Berlin Wall, brought down by citizens of another oppressed city, Using the A-frame of a tank recovery vehicle, the marines scaled the statue and secured chains around the figure alongside a noose which the Iraqis had already put there. As the vehicle's winch was tightened, the monument jerked then slowly fell forward, hanging precariously from the plinth - before crashing to the ground. Hundreds of civilians gathered around cheering, running over and swamping the huge statue as it lay in the central Shahid Square . The event took place just hours after US Marines swept into the eastern area of central Baghdad. At one point, a marine draped the face of Saddam with an American Stars and Stripes flag, but it was quickly removed. Scores of men pulled off their shoes, using them to beat the fallen statue - one of the biggest insults in the Arab world. Raising their hands in delight, men scrambled to join those dancing and jumping up and down on the enormous figure. The statue fell at 3.48pm BST. Earlier in the day, civilians threw stones at the bronze monument and used a sledge hammer to attack the plinth. One of the first to attack the stone pedestal, a large man wearing a grey vest which showed his strong arms, swung the hammer with as much force as he could, drawing cheers and applause from the crowd. While the hammer was passed round from man to man, chanting bystanders clapped in time to the blows, and chunks of stone broke away. The civilians, mostly young men, found a rope and tied it into a noose, before climbing up on a ladder and threading it round the Saddam statue's neck. INDONESIA AND MALAYSIA: VIOLENT ANTI-JAPANESE DEMONSTRATIONS DURING ASIAN TOUR BY JAPANESE PREMIER TANAKA. Date:14TH & 15TH JANUARY, 1974 Anti-Japanese feelings were running very high among Indonesia's students over the week-end of the 12th and 13th January as they awaited the arrival of Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Kakuei Tanaka. An earlier meeting with President Suharto failed to lower the tension. A??? 400 students of the Indonesian Christian University burned an effigy of Mr. Tanaka in Jakarta on Saturday (January 12th). The students also burned effigies of highly placed assistants of President Suharto, alleged to have collaborated with Japanese businessmen. They carried anti-Japanese placards denouncing 'Economic Imperialism'. The Japanese have gradually increased their level of investment in Indonesian business, which has led to some tension. Japan also takes eighty per cent of Indonesia's oil export and is seeking a big share of the new natural gas finds. President Suharto met a group of students for two and a half hours on Friday (January 11th), and answered questions on alleged government corruption and foreign capital investment policy. But he failed to defuse anti-Japanese feeling. When Mr. Tanaka arrived, students swarmed round the airport and one of them was killed. There were similar incidents when Mr. Tanaka arrived in Malaysia for talks with Malaysian Prime Minister, Mr. Tun Abdul Razak. A group of student chanted, 'Burn Tanaka, burn Tanaka' and unfurled placards with slogans such as 'Down with Japanese Imperialism'. Mr. Razak and Mr. Tanaka discussed investment in Malaysia at a low rate of interest and how to improve trading relations. 9.11アメリカ同時多発テロ事件 報告書の機密解除を求める議員たち=米ワシントンDC

Title:US DC 911 REPORT 20150107 Representatives Walter Jones and Stephen Lynch and Senator Bob Graham push for the declassification of 28 pages within a key 9/11 inquiry report. (Jan. 7) US Representatives Walter B. Jones (R-NC), Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.), and Senator Bob Graham (D-FL) held a bipartisan press conference on H. Res. 428, a resolution that calls on President Obama to declassify the 28 pages of the Joint Inquiry into Intelligence Activities Before and After the Terrorist Attacks of September 2001 that were initially classified by President George W. Bush and have remained classified under President Barack Obama. The resolution states that declassification of the pages is necessary to provide the American public with the full truth surrounding the events of September 11th. During the press conference, Rep. Stephen Lynch affirmed that the declassification was necessary in order to maintain transparency and would not pose a threat to the country's national security. Sen. Bob Graham also asserted that 28 pages in question hold details pertaining to just who financed the attacks in 2001. Graham added that the 28 pages point a 'strong finger' at Saudi Arabia as a key financier to the terrorist attacks. Representatives from the 9/11 Families United for Justice Against Terrorism and family members of victims killed in the attacks were in attendance as well.

GERMANY: EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK PRESIDENT WIM DUISENBERG SAYS INTROUDCTION OF EURO CURRENCY IS CLEAR SIGNAL OF TRUST AND HOPE

Date:DECEMBER 31, 2001 European Central Bank President Wim Duisenberg has said that the introduction of the Euro currency is a clear signal of the trust and hope in a new Europe. At midnight tonight we, the 300 million people of the euro area, will all cross a symbolic bridge like those shown on the Euro banknotes," said European Central Bank (ECB) chief Wim Duisenberg, on Monday (December 31) at a news conference on the rollout of euro cash on January 1. National currencies are to be replaced by the euro by the end of February at the latest. The ECB said the launch of the cash euro, which will start being used by the 306 million citizens of the 12-nation euro zone on January 1, was going according to plan. More than 15 billion euro banknotes worth over 630 billion euros have been produced, but less than 10 billion of these notes will enter into circulation from Tuesday, with the rest held in reserve in case of changes in demand. More than 51 billion coins worth 16 billion euros have also been minted, the ECB said. Euro notes and coins have been delivered to banks around the euro zone since September 1 and the build up of supplies has been on schedule, the ECB added. By December 31, more than six billion banknotes worth 132 billion euros and more than 37.5 billion euro coins valued at 12.4 billion euros had been transported to the regions banks. Duisenberg said he expects euro zone growth to pick up in 2002, aided by the single currency. "We expect economic growth will resume in the course of next year with our new currency," he said. The first people to receive a complete set of Euro bills were 24 children from the 12 Euro nations who took part in a competition about the Euro. Duisenberg handed the prizes to the children. AFGHANISTAN: U.N EFFORTS TO BRING ABOUT PEACEFUL TRANSFER OF POWER SUFFERS SETBACK, AS FIGHTING BREAKS OUT AROUND CAPITAL

Date:MARCH 9, 1995 The United Nations (U.N.) efforts to bring about a peaceful transfer of power in Afghanistan have suffered another setback with the latest round of fighting which erupted on Wednesday (March 8) in and around the capital, Kabul. The heavy fighting has resulted in a large number of casualties and damage to property. Kabul city presents a grim picture with heavily bombed buildings and people looking for ways to make a living in the face of heavy shelling. The hasty withdrawal of opposition leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's Hezb-i-Islami forces from the country's Charasyab province just beyond Kabul on Tuesday (March 7) after it was attacked by the Talibans, a militia movement of religious students, had raised peace hopes. Hekmatyar's forces had been using Charasyab as a base to attack Mujahideen rivals in Kabul for the last three years before the emergence of the Taliban troops. The Talibans led by their one-eyed leader, Mullah Mohammad Umar have seized control of nine provinces of Afghanistan in the last six months. The student militia is now at the gates of Kabul after successfully fighting against Mujahideen factions which have been battling for power since the fall of the Communist regime in 1992. 英保守党大会閉幕 メージャー首相

UNITED KINGDOM: PRIME MINISTER MAJOR CALLS ON CONSERVATIVE PARTY TO UNITE IN EUROPEAN CAUSE BUT VOWS NOT TO LOSE NATIONAL IDENTITY British Prime Minister John Major called on his followers to unite behind Britain's drive towards European union on Friday (October 9) when he made the closing speech of the week-long Conservative Party conference in the southern resort of Brighton. Major told the party members gathered for the annual meeting that Britain's future lay with Europe. Emotion must not govern policy, and that at the heart of the Government's policy lay one objective only: a "cold, clear-eyed calculation of the British national interest - what is right for Britain - what is right for our future" and from that calculation he would not be budged. Major's speech was seen as being crucial to his continuing leadership of the party, after a conference divided amid acrimony over Britain's commitment to a united Europe and the government's handling of the economy. In the face of a strong German currency dominating the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) in Europe and problems of recession at home, Britain dropped out of ERM on September 16. Those with objections to the drive towards a unified Europe include Lord Tebbit, a former cabinet minister, and Lady Thatcher, Major's predecessor as prime minister. Party members at the conference were split into "Euro-sceptics" and those enthusiastic about European unity. Major said that the aims of the Maastricht treaty had been distorted and exaggerated. But it was time to return to reality, and he was committed to steer the treaty that he had negotiated through parliament. He added that the treaty agreed by Britain contained flexibility and freedom that other nations had signed away. During the hour-long speech a young woman protester, who called out for the government to improve protection of the environment and attempted to unfurl a banner, was led out of the conference hall. Major ended by pledging that Britain's interests would always come first, last and always for him. As is customary, party members stood up to applaud their leader, and Major walked among them shaking hands.

PHILIPPINES: ACCUMULATED ASH AND DEBRIS FROM ERUPTING MOUNT PINATUBO BURIES HOUSES AND FARMLAND UNDER TONNES OF VOLCANIC ASH AND BOULDERS BOTOLAN POINT, PHILIPPINES Mount Pinatubo spewed ash seven kilometres (four miles) high in a mild eruption on Monday (July 1), a day after a flooded river north of Manila buried houses and farmland under tonnes of volcanic ash and boulders. On Sunday (June 30) a mass of earth and boulders roared down the Porac River in Pampanga.Residents had heeded earlier warnings to move to higher ground and no casualties were reported. Edwin de la Cruz, head of the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology monitoring station at Botolan Point said the river had risen one metre (three feet) because of rain and accumulations of ash and debris since Mount Pinatubo began erupting on June 9. De la Cruz added that the evacuation of people living in threatened areas had led to further crowding at refugee centres accommodating victims of Mount Pinatubo. A quarter of a million people have been forced to leave their homes since Pinatubo, dormant for 600 years, began erupting 22 days ago. Elsewhere, officials warned of possible flooding along four other rivers in Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales provinces, which border the volcano and declared a 20-kilometre (12-mile) danger zone around the volcano.

    サミュエル・ドウ エチオピア訪問

Date:26 AUGUST, 1980 Ethiopia has become the first African nation to give unreserved support to the revolutionary government established in Liberia last April. The Ethiopian Head of State, Lieutenant Colonel Mengistu, expressed his support on Tuesday (26 August) during a visit by the Liberian leader Master Sergeant Samuel Doe. SYNOPSIS: Sergeant Doe arrived in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, from Tanzania where he had held talks with President Julius Nyerere. The Liberian leader was met on arrival by Colonel Mengistu. The aim of the visit was to improve the Liberian government's image in Africa. Many members of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) were alienated by the bloodshed which accompanied Sergeant Doe's rise to power four months ago -- including the execution of former President Tolbert. The Ethiopians accorded Sergeant Doe full state honours on his arrival with a 21-gun salute, a guard of honour and a march past. Sergeant Doe did not attend the last OAU summit in Sierra Leone in the face of criticism of his regime -- a summit committee will report soon on the question of his attendance at the next meeting. But in talks with Colonel Mengistu, Sergeant Doe was left in no doubt of Ethiopia's support for his regime. At a state banquet the Ethiopian Head of State said both countries were now struggling against oppression and exploitation to achieve freedom, equality and democracy. After a motorcade, Sergeant Doe laid a wreath at the Victory Monument. Colonel Mengistu had earlier drawn parallels between the Liberian revolution and Ethiopia's revolution five years earlier. 【1979年ノーベル平和賞】マザー・テレサ

INDIA: NOBEL PEACE PRIZE AWARDED TO CALCUTTA'S MOTHER TERESA. Date:17 OCTOBER 1979 Mother Teresa, winner of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, has dedicated her life to the sick and hungry. Her simple message is "the poor must know that we love them". Her followers regard her as a saint, but the 69-year-old nun believes she is only doing God's work. Born of Albanian parents in what is now Yugoslavia, she came to India 50 years ago to teach geography in a convent school. She stayed on to work in the slums of Calcutta, became an Indian citizen in 1950 and founded a new religious order, "the Missionaries of Charity". Today, the order runs more than 120 homes for unwanted children and dying destitutes in India and all over the world. SYNOPSIS: The poverty and slums of Calcutta -- here alone, 36 thousand sick and dying have been given shelter. Thousands of children have been cared for and given foster parents, and over two million sick and nearly fifty thousand lepers are treated by mobile dispensaries and special clinics. But for Mother Teresa, the Peace Prize is simply a gift to the poor ... (Caption:INDIA: NOBEL PEACE PRIZE AWARDED TO CALCUTTA'S MOTHER TERESA.)

QATAR: GOVERNMENT OPTIMISTIC ABOUT NEW POLICY OF COMMERCIAL DIVERSIFICATION.

The Gulf State of Qatar has long bee conscious of the economic hazards of over-dependence on a primary source of national revenue -- the consequence of the Japanese cultured pearls on the diminishing market at a fraction of the price of pure Gulf pearls can still be recalled. The people are presently pinning their brightest and commercial diversification aimed at gaining maximum benefits from oil revenues. Over the last few years, Qatar has concentrated a good deal of the oil revenues on fishing, cement production, housing and building, natural gas exploration, transportation, and domestic industrial projects. Fishing and cement production have produced the most favourable results. Visnews staffman Noel Alexandre shot this film of industrial progress in these two fields.

SOUTH-AFRICA-CAPE-TOWN-NEW-ZEALAND-BEATS-SOUTH-AFRICA-SECOND 50,000 fans crowded the Newlands Stadium, Cape Town, South Africa, July 23, to see the second rugby Test match between New Zealand (The All Blacks) and South Africa (The Springboks). The New Zealanders, defeated 13-0 in the first Test at Johannesburg, had their revenge by gaining a dominating grip on the game in the second half and going on to win by 11 points to 3. (A goal, a penalty-goal and a dropped goal for New Zealand, and an unconverted try for South Africa.) Opening with vigorous attacking, the All Blacks opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Don Clarke, from 35 yards out, caught a pass from Chris Koch and went over near the corner flag. This seemed to spark off great determination in the Springbok forward line. Persistently pressing on, their efforts were rewarded in the 31st minute when Oxlee dived over. The result remained at 3-3 until half time. Resuming with the sun in their eyes, the All-Blacks were soon forced on the defensive by the Springbok's drive. After many near misses in the early stage, the tables were turned and the All-Blacks came back with a series of near misses. With seven minutes plus injury time left the All-Blacks persistent pressure was rewarded when Meads crossed far out and Don Clarke converted to make it 8-3. His conversion gave Clarke 101 points for the South African tour so far. Clarke was not finished yet. Three minutes from the final whistle he gathered a long pass from Briscoe, steadied himself, and put over a left-footed drop from close on 50 yards to register the final score...11-3. Both teams have two more Tests to play before the series ends.

JAPAN: TELECOMMUNICATION COMPANY NTT DOCOMO LAUNCHES ITS NEXT GENERATION MOBILE PHONE THE 3G PHONE

Date:OCTOBER 1, 2001/SEPTEMBER 27, 2001/FILE Japan has launched its much vaunted next generation mobile phones which allows users to download video off the web and conduct video conferences. Japan's NTT DoCoMo on Monday (October 1) launched a new generation of cellphones that allow users to talk face-to-face via video and surf the Internet faster than before. Braving a decade of economic gloom in the world's second-largest economy, DoCoMo began selling the new phones in the initial service area of greater metropolitan Tokyo under the brand name FOMA, for Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access. The world's first third-generation, or 3G, handsets will transmit at speeds six to 40 times faster than current cellphones and use a radio spectrum set aside for the new service. About half a dozen people lined up outside one retail shop in Tokyo's Shinjuku district in rainy weather to buy the phones. It was a low-key beginning for a technology that had investors and other wireless carriers in a frenzy just two years ago, resulting in a huge stock boom. Part of the reason for 3G's underwhelming start was that DoCoMo, Japan's top mobile operator, had formally launched 3G four months earlier as a trial service to iron out problems in an unstable network. But buyers nevertheless were curious to try out the new phone, in gadget-loving Japan. "I like it because it comes with a television inside," said one woman who came with her boyfriend to try out the new phones. "I just wanted to have newest model," said another man. While DoCoMo, which means "anywhere" in Japanese, said it had deliberately kept the launch low-key, it is not because of a lack of confidence in the technology. In fact DoCoMo is hoping people will understand that 3G is more than just for video conferencing. "On October 1st, we will be launching a high speed communication, high speed i-mode and TV phone. While they may have the function of TV telephones, it doesn't always have to be face-to-face communication. We would rather people want to use the function of video communication or video transmission in more than just that situation," said DoCoMo's president Keiji Tachikawa at a press conference early last week. Judging from the nearly 150,000 applicants for the trial batch of 4,500 phones in May, those goals may be reached sooner than expected. DoCoMo is aiming for 150,000 subscribers by March. DoCoMo is hoping for no less than a repeat of its success with "i-mode", its popular, current-generation Net access service that lets users surf the Web, check e-mail and read the news on business card-size screens. I-mode's 27.5 million users have made DoCoMo into one of Japan's biggest companies by value and put it on the global map as the first mobile carrier to succeed in making mobile Internet services popular. And analysts said NTT may be successful in repeating that success. Mark Berman, Director of Equity research at Credit Suisse First Boston said "Now if we take 3g, and all the sudden you move the services to network, that offers, let's say, it's only 64 kilobits which we think is going to happen, you still giving people a network that offers six times as much as fast network, higher data rate, therefore I think it's given actually going to be successful." The faster speeds are expected to allow people to communicate in new ways, exemplified by the tiny camera on the Panasonic-brand video mobile phone, which is equipped with a camera for live, two-way video conferencing. Although prices vary depending on whether a customer is buying a new 3G phone or trading in a 2G model, the video phone ranges from 59,800 to 76,800 yen (502 U.S. dollars to 670 U.S. dollars), depending on its model and functions. Tachikawa said that 20,000 of the standard models would be available at 260 shops throughout Tokyo and that several thousand video phones would be for sale. Total monthly output would be 25,000 units, he said. The phones are capable of transmitting data at 64 to 384 kilobits per second, six to 40 times faster than the slowest 9.6 kbps used for i-mode services. New Zealand sees largest annual increase in food prices in 32 years

New Zealand's food prices were 11.3 percent higher in December 2022 than they were in December 2021, which was the biggest annual increase in 32 years, the statistics department Stats NZ said on Thursday. It has been the biggest annual increase since April 1990, when food prices increased by 11.4 percent, Stats NZ said. In December 2022, the annual increase was due to rises across all the broad food categories measured, with fruit and vegetable prices increasing by 23 percent, compared with December 2021. Grocery food was the largest contributor to this movement. Monthly food prices rose 1.1 percent in December 2022 compared with November 2022. 第20回 中国共産党大会 国家発展改革委員会が会見

The Chinese economy has made extraordinary achievements in its economic development amid the complex international situation over the past decade which has resulted in the historic leap of the country’s economic strength, an official said Monday. Zhao Chenxin, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, listed a few statistics of Chinese economy in the past decade at a press conference on the sidelines of the ongoing 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. "Since the 18th National Congress, our Party has solved a great number of problems that had long gone unsolved, securing many accomplishments that hold major future significance, and enabled historical achievements and changes in China's economic and social development. Numbers speak louder than words. From 2012 to 2021, China's GDP grew from 53.9 to 114.4 trillion yuan (about 7.5 to 15.9 trillion U.S. dollars). It now accounts for 18.5 percent of the world economy, up from 11.3 percent, an increase of 7.2 percentage points. China's per capita GDP increased from 39,800 to 81,000 yuan (about 5,500 to 11,200 U.S. dollars),"said Zhao. "The historic leap of China's economic strength and the remarkable and extraordinary achievements in China's economic development were made against the backdrop of a grim and complex international situation, with a variety of major risks and challenges constantly emerging, which are indeed hard-won gains. It would not have been possible without the overall leadership of General Secretary Xi Jinping and guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era," he continued. A series of significant and innovative viewpoints have been proposed under the guidance of Xi Jinping's economic thought to adapt to the changing circumstances and new challenges over the past ten years, said Zhao. "Xi Jinping's economic thought has produced a number of innovative concepts, including the important theoretical view of strengthening the Party's overall leadership of economic work, a philosophy of people-oriented development, a new development philosophy featuring and adhering to the ideas of innovation, coordination, greenness, openness and shared development, the major conclusion that China's economy has shifted from high-speed growth to the stage of high-quality development, the important thought of improving the socialist market economy, the major policy of supply-side structural reform, the major strategy of constructing the new development pattern, and the important thought of promoting the sound development of economic globalization," he said. Malaysian ringgit movements continue to be market determined: central bank

The Malaysian Central Bank said on Friday that Malaysian ringgit movements will continue to be market determined. Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) said in a statement that the bank continues to closely monitor and ensure orderly financial market conditions amidst external developments that have led to persistent strength in the U.S. dollar against almost all currencies, including the ringgit. The dollar has strengthened significantly due to aggressive monetary policy tightening in the United States, it added. It also said that tighter global financial conditions and higher volatility in the foreign exchange markets are not expected to derail Malaysia's economic growth. According to the bank, the Malaysian economy expanded by 8.9 percent in the second quarter and will continue to be driven by further improvements in labor market conditions and higher tourism activities. It also said Malaysia's exports are underpinned by its highly diversified products and markets. The domestic financial system is well capitalized with ample liquidity, and financial intermediation continues to be supportive of the economy, it added. The BNM also said that the foreign exchange market continues to function and intermediate effectively. According to the bank, daily onshore foreign exchange transaction volume has been increasing throughout, reaching a current average of 13.3 billion dollars against 11.3 billion dollars in 2021, amid two-way flows. Bond market activity remains healthy, and is well supported by institutional investors and financial institutions, it said. It also said that BNM's market operations will ensure sufficient liquidity and orderly functioning of financial markets. "Malaysia remains an open economy. Rather than resorting to capital controls or re-pegging of the ringgit, the policy priority now is to sustain economic growth in an environment of price stability and to further strengthen domestic economic fundamentals through structural reforms. This will provide a more enduring support for the ringgit," Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Nor Shamsiah said. Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Kuala Lumpur. Tunisian young parents feel pinch as price of school supplies hikes

Rising costs of school supplies cause extra pain for young parents in Tunisia during their back-to-school shopping ahead of the new school year that starts next week. "The prices have increased ridiculously. I spend about 300 Tunisian dinars (93 U.S. dollars) on my kids' school supplies, accounting for 15 percent of my monthly income," Fatma, a Tunisian mother of two, told Xinhua. She complained that she had to adjust the yearly budget for her family over and over again to cover the back-to-school expenses. Maryem Blidi, a 44-year-old office manager in the northern province of Ariana, told Xinhua that she had to limit her budget for buying stationery as the rising inflation creeps into every aspect of life in Tunisia. To curb inflation, the central bank in the North African country raised the key interest rate by 75 basis points to 7 percent in May, the first hike in over three years. However, inflation continued to rise for the consecutive 11 months to 8.6 percent in August, the highest record since September 1991. The increase is explained by the rise in the price of food products (11.9 percent), furniture, household items and routine household maintenance (11.3 percent), and educational products and services (10 percent), according to the data released by the National Institute of Statistics on Monday. When asked about the reason for the stationery inflation, many parents referred to the spill-out of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, both key timber suppliers. Data shows that Russia exported around 6 million tons of pulp and paper products in 2021. Moreover, as many school supplies in Tunisia are imported, their prices rose under a stronger dollar led by the U.S. Federal Reserve's repeated rate hikes this year. For Fatma, one of the ways in which inflation will harm children is through its impact on their education. "Education is the top priority for our family, so we tighten our belts to buy school supplies. School and schooling should be altogether be protected from profit and the free market, our kids need to have equal opportunities in their learning experience," she said. Biden denounces white supremacy after Buffalo mass shooting

U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday denounced white supremacy in a visit to the city of Buffalo in New York, where a gunman killed 10 people and injured three others, 11 of them African Americans. SOUNDBITE 1 (English): JOE BIDEN, U.S. President "White supremacy is a poison. It's a poison, running through our body politic. And it's been allowed to fester and grow right in front of our eyes. No more. I mean, no more. We need to say as clearly and forcefully as we can that the ideology of white supremacy has no place in America. None." Payton Gendron, an 18-year-old white man, opened fire at a supermarket in Buffalo on Saturday. He was alleged to have been motivated by a far-right conspiracy theory that white people are at risk of being replaced by immigrants and people of color. The massacre is being investigated as a racially motivated hate crime. SOUNDBITE 2 (English): JOE BIDEN, U.S. President "What happened here is simple and straightforward: Terrorism. Terrorism. Domestic terrorism. Violence inflicted in the service of hate and the vicious thirst for power that defines one group of people being inherently inferior to any other group." The Buffalo attack was the deadliest mass shooting in the United States so far in 2022 and one of at least 202 such incidents -- defined as one in which four or more people were injured or killed -- through mid-May, according to the Gun Violence Archive. More than 29,000 people have either been killed or injured in gun violence-related incidents across the country since the start of the year, the nonprofit organization's data also showed. Many Americans believe that gun violence in the country has much to do with a high number of firearms in private hands and easy access to lethal weapons. Licensed gun makers in the United States built 11.3 million firearms in 2020, a 187 percent increase over the number they made in 2000, according to a report released by the Justice Department on Tuesday. "We can only address the current rise in violence if we have the best available information and use the most effective tools and research to fuel our efforts," U.S. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said in a statement. "This report is an important step in that direction," Monaco vowed. "The Department will continue to gather the data necessary to tailor our approach at the most significant drivers of gun violence and take shooters off the streets." At least 4 wounded in oil refinery blast in Turkey

At least four workers were wounded in an explosion at an oil refinery in northwest Turkey, local media reported on Friday. The blast occurred at the Turkish Petroleum Refineries Corporation (TUPRAS)'s facility in the Kocaeli province, about 100 km to the country's largest city Istanbul, reported the Ihlas news agency. It said the cause of the incident, which happened at one of the filling tanks of the refinery, was not immediately clear, and authorities launched a comprehensive investigation. The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals, the report said. A fire broke out after the explosion and was extinguished in a short time, it added. TUPRAS operates four refineries across the country, and the refinery in Kocaeli processes 11.3 million tons of crude oil per year, accounting for 33 percent of Turkey's petroleum products consumption. Egypt's external debt jumps to 134.8 bln USD by end of March, says CBE report

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) has said that the country's external debt jumped to 134.8 billion U.S. dollars by the end of March 2021, an increase of about 11.3 billion dollars from June 2020, the end of Egypt's 2019-2020 fiscal year, local media reported on Wednesday. The CBE said the increase was mainly caused by the rise in loans granted by banks and the depreciation of the U.S. dollar. The long-term external debt increased to 121.5 billion dollars, making up 90.2 percent of the total external debt. The short-term external debt increase by 2.4 billion dollars, reaching 13.3 billion, the bank added. The government remains the main obligor, accounting for around 59.7 percent of Egypt's external debt, reaching 80.5 billion dollars, said the CBE's report. 中国中部地方の洪水被害に対する緊急対応を強化

China on Wednesday upgraded its emergency response to floods from Level III to Level II as heavy downpours ravaged the central province of Henan, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management. Torrential rains have lashed the central, western, and northern regions of Henan since July 17, and continued to wreak havoc as of Tuesday afternoon, the MEM said. Some rivers in the province, including tributaries of the Yellow and Haihe rivers, have seen their water levels exceed warning levels, the Ministry of Water Resources warned. Continued rainfalls are expected to trigger sharp water level rises and flooding over the next three days. According to the meteorological department, as of 14:00 on Tuesday, average rainfall over the past 24 hours reached 253 mm in the provincial capital Zhengzhou, with the biggest rainfall of 400.8 mm recorded in Pingdingshan City's Lushan County. The heavy downpours flooded streets, stranding motorists and disrupting traffic across the region. Train services were suspended, many highways were closed, and flights were delayed or canceled in Henan. In Zhengzhou, heavy rain even flooded the subway, leaving passengers trapped in waist-high floodwater. Meanwhile, firefighters in the cities of Zhengzhou, Pingdingshan, and Luoyang have been busy evacuating local residents to safety. The provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters on Tuesday said that more than 144,660 residents have been affected by torrential rains in Henan since July 16, and 10,152 have been relocated to safe places. As of Tuesday, fire departments in Henan have carried out 408 flood-relief and emergency rescues. Fire departments in Zhengzhou alone have dispatched 548 fire engines, 25 boats, and 2,710 firefighters in response to emergencies. A total of 849 trapped people were saved, and more than 1,500 residents were evacuated to safety in Zhengzhou. Floodwater has damaged 9,222 hectares of crops, causing direct economic losses of nearly 73 million yuan (about 11.3 million U.S. dollars). The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters dispatched a work team to the affected areas in Henan to help local authorities with disaster relief work. China has a four-tier flood-control emergency response system, with Level I being the most severe. (Original Title: China upgrades flood emergency response in central province)

Link between AstraZeneca vaccine and blood clots "clear," EMA official tells Italian daily

There is a causal link between the coronavirus vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and very rare cases of blood clots, although it remains unclear what the connection is and the possible causes are likewise still unknown, a senior European Medicines Agency (EMA) expert told the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero on Tuesday. "It is clear that an association exists" between the vaccine and the dozens of reported blood clots, said Marco Cavaleri, head of the EMA's health threats and vaccines strategy. "Such cases are extremely rare, and the benefits (of the vaccine) still largely outweigh the risks," he stressed. "Yet, it is becoming increasingly hard to say there is no cause-effect relationship between the vaccination with AstraZeneca and very rare cases of unusual blood clots associated with a low number of platelets," he said. In its latest assessment of embolic and thrombotic events reported after coronavirus vaccination published on March 24, the EMA looked at 258 such cases (45 of them fatal) that occurred in Europe out of almost 20 million first doses of the vaccine administered. On March 31, the agency explained that such an assessment did not unveil "any specific risk factors, such as age, gender or a previous medical history of clotting disorders for these very rare events." "A causal link with the vaccine is not proven but is possible, and further analysis is continuing," it added. Cavaleri told the Italian newspaper on Tuesday that the assessment process was "far from over." The EMA is expected to provide a new evaluation on the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine soon, perhaps by late Wednesday, the European Union's (EU) Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides said on Twitter on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) and the Health Ministry were also due to discuss the issue late on Tuesday, although the AIFA would reportedly not issue any new rule on the AstraZeneca vaccine's use pending the EMA's decision. Like other EU countries, Italy on March 15 issued a "temporary and precautionary" ban on the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine following reports of a small number of clot deaths in the country. Three days later, it resumed use of the AstraZeneca vaccine following the EMA's announcement that it was safe. Also in March, the Italian branch of AstraZeneca said that "an analysis of safety data on over ten million doses administered has shown no evidence of an increased risk of pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis in any age group, gender or batch." The AstraZeneca vaccine was authorized for use in Italy on Jan. 29 and is one of four vaccines currently approved against the coronavirus here, the others being those by Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson. Italy's vaccination campaign is ongoing but it has been marred by a slow start and delays. To date, the country has administered 11.3 million doses out of the 14.1 million doses available, according to the government. Over 3.5 million people have received both vaccine doses.

Dead Bruda whale discovered on Thai beach

A rotting carcass of a rare Bryde's whale, or Bruda whale, has been found washed up on rocks at Choeng Mon beach on Koh Samui in southern Thailand. The whale was found beached on rocks around 20 metres from the shore on Sunday. It is about 11.3 metres long with an estimated weight of one tonne. Its sex is yet to have been determined. Chaowalit Phetnoy, the Koh Samui fishery office chief, said the carcass was probably washed ashore by waves from the north east. Chaowalit said experts from the Chumphon-based Marine Resources Development and Research Centre for the Upper Gulf of Thailand were expected to arrive this week to examine the carcass and try to determine how it died. The Bruda whale is at risk of extinction due to its small population size, restricted range, and several other major threats. Chaowait said he estimates that fewer than 100 of the whales are in existence. Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Bangkok. (XHTV)

UK expected to see worst recession in over 300 years: senior official

he British economy is forecast to shrink by 11.3 percent this year, the worst recession in more than 300 years in the country as a result of the coronavirus crisis, British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak said Wednesday. The chancellor told British lawmakers that the Office of Budget of Responsibility (OBR) did not expect the economy to return to its pre-coronavirus levels until the end of 2022. SOUNDBITE (English): RISHI SUNAK, British Chancellor of the Exchequer "The OBR forecasts that the economy will contract this year by 11.3 percent, the largest fall in output for more than 300 years. As the restrictions are eased, it expects the economy to start recovering and growing by 5.5 percent next year, 6.6 percent in 2022 and then 2.3 percent, 1.7 percent and 1.8 percent in the following years. Even with growth returning, our economic output is not expected to return to pre-crisis levels until the fourth quarter of 2022. The economic damage is likely to be lasting. Long-term scarring means in 2025, the economy will be around 3 percent smaller than expected in the March Budget." He warned that the "economic emergency has only just begun" as he unveiled his first Spending Review in the wake of the coronavirus crisis. In the Spending Review, he said the British government has spent 280 billion pounds (about 374.1 billion U.S. dollars) on its response to the coronavirus crisis and intends to spend a further 55 billion pounds (about 73.5 billion dollars) next year to tackle the pandemic. Meanwhile, the public borrowing is set to stand at 394 billion pounds (about 526.4 billion dollars) in the current 2020/21 financial year, equivalent to 19 percent of Britain's gross domestic product (GDP), said Sunak. To fuel growth and support jobs, he said that Britain is estimated to spend 100 billion pounds (133.6 billion dollars) of capital expenditure next year on infrastructure. In addition, Britain will establish a new infrastructure bank -- headquartered in the north of England -- to work with the private sector to finance major new investment projects across the country, he said. Sunak's remarks came just one day after Britain recorded the highest daily COVID-19 death toll since May 12 on Tuesday. The coronavirus-related deaths in Britain rose by 608 to 55,838, marking the highest daily death number since May 12, according to official figures released Tuesday. Environmentalists and markets eye Argentina’s transgenic wheat askance

Argentina, one of the world’s biggest food exporters, has become the first country to approve the marketing of transgenic wheat, a variant named HB4 which its creators consider a triumph of science but faces the rejection of the markets, environmental activists, and health professionals. Developed by the biotech giant Bioceres, drought-resistant HB4 is the result of joint work between that private company, CONICET (Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas) researchers and a team at the 'Universidad Nacional del Litoral.' Argentina has been producing transgenic soy and maize for years, mainly used for animal feed and also for emulsifiers and sweeteners for human consumption, present in ultra-processed foods but in very small quantities. This wheat will be the first time that a genetically modified seed is used to elaborate a food aimed totally at human consumption – the flour used to make bread or pasta. Although Argentina’s food health authorities have approved its marketing, linked to the application of glufosinate-ammonium herbicides, the effective start of sales will depend on the endorsement of Brazil, Argentina’s leading wheat importer. In a statement, agricultural firms, producers, stock exchanges, and Argentine bond markets criticized "the extraordinary economic risk" posed by HB4. "The Argentine market has no experience in consuming transgenic wheat and the commercial domestic use of HB4 will have an impact on wheat pricing and supply in this country," they highlighted in a communiqué. "The damage to the Argentine wheat market would be irreparable and irreversible, since the contamination [of non-transgenic wheat by this new variant] would spread and segmentation become unviable, thus jeopardizing the joint [public/private] efforts to consolidate new markets and boost exports strongly," they explain. Brazil’s Wheat Industry Association also expressed itself "against the use of this alternative source of food production." Last year Argentina was the world’s ninth wheat producer with 19.5 million tons and fifth exporter with 11.3 million tons. Beijing's nearly 300 medical personnel assist Xinjiang in improving local treatment

Beijing has selected in batches nearly 300 medical personnel since 2016 to assist northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in improving local health service system. As the Hotan Prefecture in Xinjiang has inadequate medical service resources, many medical workers are willing to offer their help. The new outpatient service building of the People's Hospital in Kunyu City was put into use on October 28, 2018, supported mostly by Beijing's funds to aid Xinjiang, totaling 75 million yuan (about 11.3 million U.S. dollars). "From 2016 to 2020, a total of 289 doctors were sent to Hotan. After the doctors from Beijing came to the Hotan Prefecture, what they said the most was 'I want to do my bit here'. They often asked to return to wards on weekends. They just want to help build a local medical team so that people in Hotan can enjoy relatively high-level medical and health services without having to go out from their homes," said Zhang Li, who heads Beijing's 10th medical team to assist Xinjiang. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period from 2016 to 2020, Beijing has carried out 45 projects to help improve Xinjiang's medical and health services, with a total investment of 585 million yuan (about 87.8 million U.S. dollars). In addition, a total of 289 medical personnel have been selected to assist Xinjiang in this period, who have helped to improve the local health service system and contributed to targeted poverty alleviation. Expressways, railways busy beating travel peak of return trip as National Day holiday is coming to end

Expressways and railways across China are busy preparing to beat the travel peak of return trips as the National Day holiday is coming to an end. The traffic over the past six days of the holiday has been stable. On October 6, the traffic flow on expressways hit nearly 50 million cars and the railways put through 10 million passengers over the past six days. Data provided by the Ministry of Transport, the traffic flow of national expressways reached 48.98 million vehicles on October 6. From October 1-5 , the average daily vehicles put through reached more than 49 million, with the highest on October 1, which reached more than 53 million, 0.85 percent more than that on the National Day holiday in 2019. "The return road trip started on October 6, with the traffic flow gradually rising, with the biggest flow to be concentrated in such areas as the Yangtze River Delta, the Zhujiang (Pearl) River Delta, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Chengdu-Chongqing region," said Zhou Kefu of the Highway Monitoring and Response Center under the Ministry of Transport. The public transit operation of the high-speed trains has made the one-day short-distance round trip a hot spot. The railways in the country put through 10 million passengers for six days running. On October 6, the railways put through 11.3 million passengers and added 803 passenger trains. The number of tourists going to the populus diversifolia forests in the Ejin Banner of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region doubled. "The daily passengers the Ejin Railway Station receives are more than eight times than usual. Especially we expect 57 special trains from all over the country this year, 20 more than that of last year and the number of tourists could increase by about 30 percent," said Jiang Guoliang, head of the Ejin Railway Station. The local transport department has taken a series of measures to beat the return trip rush by making real-time adjustments according to the monitoring big data. World food prices rise for first time in 2020, pushed by prices for vegetable oil, sugar

STORY: World food prices rise for first time in 2020, pushed by prices for vegetable oil, sugar DATELINE: July 4, 2020 LENGTH: 00:02:58 LOCATION: Rome CATEGORY: ECONOMY SHOTLIST 1. various of Guatemala 2. various of Egypt 3. various of Africa STORYLINE World food prices climbed in June for the first time this year, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported Thursday, as big rises in prices for vegetable oil and sugar and a smaller rise in dairy prices offset lower prices in other areas. The overall index rose 2.4 percent, the first time it showed gains since December 2019. The overall rise in prices came despite a modest decrease in prices for grains and cereals -- the largest component in the index -- which fell 0.6 percent. FAO said wheat prices fell the most based on strong harvests in several major wheat-producing countries. Rice prices saw a small decline based on technical factors, while corn prices held steady. Meat prices also fell, slipping 0.6 percent as well. FAO said that strong production levels for chicken and beef were enough to offset rising demand from China and Middle Eastern countries. Pork prices rose in June, but very slight. The other sub-indexes all saw prices climb in June. The vegetable oil index rose by 11.3 percent, reversing five months of declines. FAO said prices for all types of oil gained ground, but the biggest mover was palm oil prices. Prices for sugar climbed 10.6 percent, pushed by higher oil prices that pushed transport costs higher and also increased demand for ethanol, leaving less sugar for international markets. Dairy prices were 4.0 percent higher in June. FAO said prices were impacted by rising demand, though it noted dairy products remained nearly 5 percent below their levels of a year ago, with demand remaining below levels registered before the coronavirus pandemic. The monthly FAO Food Price Index is based on worldwide prices for 23 food commodity categories covering prices for 73 different products compared to a baseline year. The next index is scheduled for release on Aug. 6, 2020. Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Rome. (XHTV)
