WEF applauds China's commitment to combat COVID-19 pandemic: senior healthcare executive
Shyam Bishen, head of Shaping the Future of Health and Healthcare at the World Economic Forum (WEF), welcomed China's calling for the building of "a community of common health for mankind" amid the global public health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Bishen made the remarks in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the WEF Annual Meeting in Davos on Wednesday. He also underlined the problems of access of developing countries to COVID vaccines, naming it a problem that links to health equity. SOUNDBITE 1 (English): SHYAM BISHEN, Head of Shaping the Future of Health and Healthcare at the World Economic Forum "The problem was that most of the production for vaccines was coming from rich nations, was concentrated in just certain areas in the developed world. It was very hard to get out vaccines to developing countries and low and middle-income countries in Africa and other parts of the world. That is unfortunate that even now only about 16-17 percent of the African population is vaccinated, whereas, as you say, there is an oversupply of vaccines in the developed world." China, he said, has made a significant contribution with its at least three listed COVID vaccines approved for emergency use by the World Health Organization (WHO). SOUNDBITE 2 (English): SHYAM BISHEN, Head of Shaping the Future of Health and Healthcare at the World Economic Forum "China has made a great contribution. As we know, you know there are at least three vaccines that have emergency use listing from China that are being used in many developing world. And I think China has made very good contributions." Looking ahead to the next pandemic, Bishen said it would require global cooperation, including pathogen surveillance and timely sharing of information. More than half of LGBTQ+ adults have felt isolated from their family due to their sexuality or gender identity - but some did feel better after coming out, a study has found
More than half of LGBTQ+ adults have felt isolated from their family due to their sexuality or gender identity - but some did feel better after coming out, a study has found.A poll of 500 LGBTQ+ adults found 57 per cent felt they had no-one to turn to after coming out, with 49 per cent also feeling isolated from their friends. As a result, while 38 per cent felt relieved and 32 per cent were happy after disclosing their true feelings, 26 per cent were left feeling vulnerable while 17 per cent felt alone.Worryingly, 16 per cent feel unable to reach out to friends or family when they need to speak about personal problems. For some, their relationship has only worsened since they came out as LGBTQ+ with their family (14 per cent) and friends (30 per cent). But 25 per cent said their relationship is now better than it was before. It also found 63 per cent feel a lack of kindness at the time made a difference to how they felt after coming out.The stats emerged in a study by Fairy and Ariel, to mark its #SpreadTheLove campaign in partnership with youth homelessness charity akt, ahead of Pride Month.A spokesperson for the laundry and washing up brands said: "Things have not been easy over the past two years, so it's important we don't underestimate how valuable a simple act of love and support can be to someone who may need it."This survey shows inclusivity, acceptance and kindness go hand-in-hand with one another - and the simple act of showing someone you care can really help brighten up someone's day."Our family, be that blood relatives or our chosen family, play an important role in our happiness and showing them you care about them goes a long way."This might be as simple as having an open conversation at home, which can seem more relaxed over dinner or even while doing the household chores."Just letting someone know that you are there if they want to talk can go a long way."The study also found when it comes to the term 'family', 41 per cent consider this to be their direct relatives. But 21 per cent see their family as being anyone they have a strong bond with, such as friends, while seven per cent feel this way about the people they live with.More than six in 10 wish they saw their friends and family more than they currently do, with nearly one in 10 (nine per cent) often going a week without seeing those they consider to be family. And 10 per cent also don't typically see any friends over the average week. This was heightened during the pandemic, with 23 per cent admitting they found it 'very difficult' not having access to their support network of friends and family. As a result, 26 per cent said the easing of Covid restrictions has improved their relationship with their friends, while 24 per cent said the same of their family. It also emerged 56 per cent of those polled said having dinner with friends and family at home can make it easier to have difficult conversations, while sharing household tasks like washing up with friends or family also makes it easier for 50 per cent to open up.But 34 per cent said a simple act of kindness from a loved one makes them feel less anxious and more supported, with being sent a nice message (38 per cent) the most helpful when going through a personal issue. Others polled via OnePoll found going for a walk (35 per cent) or a drink (34 per cent) with friends or family helped.A spokesperson for Ariel and Fairy, who have a long-term partnership with LGBTQ+ youth homelessness charity akt, said: "Being able to express yourself is one of the keys to a happy life."It's important we're able to approach one another and have honest discussions when we need them most."Creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable to be their full authentic self can start with someone as simple as spreading the love with a smile."Carrie Reiners, deputy CEO at akt, said: "Thanks to Ariel and Fairy's #SpreadTheLove campaign, akt will be able to continue to assist the increasing numbers of young LGBTQ+ people across the UK who face homelessness and abuse simply for being who they are. "Their continued support allows akt to provide safe accommodation and support when and where it is needed most all across the UK." Qatar Airways CEO hopes for settlement "out of court" with Airbus
When asked about the dispute with Airbus, tourism minister and Qatar Airways chief executive Akbar Al Baker says he hopes the dispute could be settled "outside a court of law". A festering legal dispute between France-based Airbus and Qatar Airways shined the spotlight on the aircraft manufacturer's ability to live up to the standards and bringing to fore testy relations between the aeronautics and space giant and the Gulf airline, which had alleged that paint peeling off its A350s has led to 21 of the planes being grounded. The issue has fuelled a war of words between Airbus and Qatar's state carrier. Qatar expects up to 200,000 air passengers a day during the World Cup,according to authorities, with airlines across the Gulf organising scores of shuttle flights to bring fans in. Britain's favourite cake has been revealed - as the humble cheesecake
Britain's favourite cake has been revealed - as the humble cheesecake.A study of 2,000 Brits also saw lemon drizzle, carrot and chocolate fudge cake fall within the top 40 most popular cakes. But surprisingly, cheesecake topped the poll with 37 per cent of the vote, beating some UK classics including coffee and walnut cake and fruitcake. Chocolate cake took second spot, ahead of the classic Victoria Sponge.Other varieties of bake to make the list were Battenburg and Christmas cake, as well as fondant fancies, madeira loaf, spotted dick, apple cake and flapjack. The research was commissioned by Dr. Oetker Baking, which recreated iconic pictures of the Queen from each decade of her 70 year-reign entirely from cake, using cake ingredients and decorations. Each cake portrait was made from a different style of cake that was fashionable during the era pictured. The portraits were displayed at a pop-up gallery, Cakes of the Crown, today [May 26 2022] in Royal Windsor. Prudence Staithe, the food artist behind the masterpieces, said: "Baking gives you a world of opportunity to get creative and best of all, it's great fun, especially when it comes to decorating and designing your topping. "The Queen is an icon and the eight bakes that were displayed show how interesting her reign has been as well as how much the nation's taste in cakes has developed."The study also found a third of Brits bake at home at least once a month. And nearly four in 10 plan to bake for the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday weekend, opting to whip up a classic Victoria sponge in honour of the Queen. And in line with the cake art exhibition's display of baking trends, 16 per cent are planning a vegan chocolate, zucchini and courgetti cake. The research, conducted via OnePoll, also found the average adult will consume 72 portions of cake every year.Special occasions (46 per cent), including birthdays, Christmas and weddings, emerged as the most popular popular time for some celebratory home baking and to indulge in a sweet treat. But 41 per cent will tuck into a slice of baked deliciousness because they fancy something sweet. And 39 per cent enjoy eating cake because of the variety of flavours. In true British fashion, 42 per cent think an English breakfast tea is the best drink to serve up with your favourite home bake, followed by coffee (38 per cent) and hot chocolate (18 per cent).Jen Brown, Head of Cake at Dr. Oetker, added: "Baking is great fun, and you don't have to be an expert to get creative in the kitchen. "Something like a Victoria sponge or Jubilee-themed cupcakes is a great starting point - both are simple but effective and offer a wonderful way to pay tribute to the Queen. "They're also ideal bakes to make with friends or family, or simply as an activity to enjoy alone as a little 'me-time'."We loved recreating Her Majesty as cake art for our Cakes of the Crown gallery and were thrilled that so many Windsor visitors and residents were able to join us and sample the delicious flavours of the Queen's reign."The nation's 40 favourite flavours of cakes and bakes:1. At least 14 killed after explosions rock Afghan cities
At least 14 people were killed and 32 others wounded in four explosions that rocked Afghanistan's capital Kabul and northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif on Wednesday, authorities said. In Kabul, at least five worshippers were killed and 17 others wounded after a blast ripped through a mosque during evening prayers in Kolola Pushta locality of Police District (PD) 4, an Italian-run surgical center wrote on social media. The blast occurred when people were offering prayers in Hazrat-e-Zekria Mosque, police spokesman Khalid Zadran said in a tweet. The blast came about one hour after three consecutive explosions struck three van-buses in PD 10 and PD 5 in Mazar-i-Sharif, killing nine people and wounding 15 others, Mohammad Asif Waziri, spokesman for the provincial police department, told Xinhua. The targeted buses were carrying commuters along busy roads during the evening rush hour in the northern city, capital of Balkh province. Shanghai maintains car exports despite COVID-19 resurgence
China's business hub Shanghai has managed to maintain its car exports despite the recent COVID-19 resurgence. On Wednesday morning, more than 1,000 new cars of China's largest carmaker SAIC Motor were lined up slowly on the ramp at Haitong Pier in Shanghai. After loading, these new cars will be exported to Australia. The company expects overseas sales in May to reach 1.6 times that of the same period last year. Haitong Pier is among the largest auto-export terminals in China. Half of China's auto exports by sea depart from here before reaching more than 100 countries and regions in the world. On Wednesday night, a ro-ro ship carrying the SAIC Motor cars and 2,000 other vehicles set sail. In about 2 weeks, they will arrive in 3 major ports in Australia including Melbourne. SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): XI JIALIN, Executive Director of Marketing Department, Shanghai Haitong International Automobile Terminal Co., LTD. "All ports in Shanghai, including the Haitong Pier, has maintained normal operation. We have witnessed a 32 percent rise in export volumes at our terminal from January to April compared with the same period last year. After the pandemic became severe in April, there was an 8 percent decrease year-on-year. However, starting from May, with government support, and as a new operation mode is implemented, the throughput of May is expected to be roughly the same as that of last year." As China's new energy vehicles are gaining popularity overseas, shipping demands have been on the rise. The Shanghai-based SAIC Motor said it is expected to sell more than 70,000 vehicles overseas this month, up over 60 percent year on year. SOUNDBITE 2 (English): MICHAEL WOOD, Minister of Transport, New Zealand "As you can see, there was a very significant program of work that is in place to make sure that New Zealand reaches our target and in 2035 of having 30 percent of our fleet as electric vehicles and more generally cleaning up fleet. Crucial to the success of these programs is working with the likes of great motor distributors in Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation to ensure an adequate supply of zero and lower emission vehicles for the New Zealand market." SAIC said it aims to sell 800,000 vehicles overseas in 2022, up nearly 15 percent year-on-year. By 2025, it is expected to sell 1.5 million vehicles overseas. GLOBALink | Researchers start planting space-bred seeds returned by Shenzhou-13
Chinese researchers have commenced breeding experiments on 12,000 seeds that were bred inside the Shenzhou-13 crewed spaceship in space for six months. The seeds, including alfalfa, oats and fungi, were selected by multiple research institutions last year. They were brought back to Earth by the Shenzhou-13 on April 16. Space breeding refers to the process of exposing seeds to cosmic radiation and microgravity during a spaceflight mission to mutate seed genes and then send them back to Earth to generate new species. Researchers at M-Grass, a tech enterprise in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, have conducted experiments on six grass strains onboard the Shenzhou-13. After further selection and planting, superior seed varieties will be used for ecological restoration and urban landscape construction. SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LIU SIYANG, Senior researcher at M-Grass "We plant some seeds in the field. If they perform well, we'll multiply them in a short period of time by means of tissue culture. In this way, the cycle of propagation and industrialization of new varieties will become shorter. Since Shenzhou-13, we have focused on herbage cultivation, so the proportion of herbage seeds is larger." Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Hohhot, China. Zambia on Wednesday joined the rest of the African continent in commemorating the Africa Freedom Day with President Hakainde Hichilema calling for the exploitation of Africa's abundant natural resources to grow economies. While acknowledging that many countries on the continent have attained political independence, the Zambian leader expressed concern that many countries have not yet attained economic emancipation. He expressed concern that the continent was still grappling with many challenges such as food insecurity, instability as well as other challenges which have been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to him, Africa was endowed with abundant natural resources which could go a long way in unlocking sustainable development and improving food security if properly harnessed. "These resources can improve food security in our country, the region, continent and the rest of the world if they are properly managed and harnessed," he said in his address to mark the day which was televised on the state broadcaster. While the continental theme for this year's commemoration is "Strengthening Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on the African Continent", Zambia chose the local theme, "Leveraging National Resources to Boost Food Security." The Zambia leader said the country was self-sufficient in the production of maize, cassava and groundnuts which could go a long way in contributing to food security if properly managed. The main commemoration in Lusaka, the country's capital, started with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Freedom Statue in honor of people who died while fighting for the country's independence. A ceremony was later held at State House in which various people were honored for their contribution to the country's development in various areas. Wall Street climbs after Fed minutes meet expectations
Wall Street ended higher Wednesday (May 25), after the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve's latest monetary policy meeting, which showed policymakers unanimously felt the U.S. economy was very strong as they grappled with reining in inflation without triggering a recession. The minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee's May meeting, which culminated in a 50-basis-point hike in the Fed funds target rate - the biggest jump in 22 years - showed most of the committee's members judged that further such rate hikes would "likely be appropriate" at its upcoming June and July meetings. "I think the tone of the FOMC minutes pretty much confirms what the market was anticipating before the release of those minutes that the Federal Reserve was taking on a slightly more dovish tone, giving themselves leeway later in the year for more moderate rate increases than what we expect to see over the next couple of meetings,' said Gary Schlossberg, global strategist at the Wells Fargo Investment Institute in San Francisco, California. All three major U.S. stock indexes gyrated earlier in the day amid increasing jitters stemming from business and consumer surveys, economic data and corporate earnings reports suggesting a cooling American economy - even as the Fed prepares to toss a bucket of cold water on it to tackle decades-high inflation. Fears that overly aggressive interest rate hikes by the Fed could tip the economy into recession despite evidence that inflation peaked in March has fueled those concerns. The S&P 500 gained 36.97 points, or 0.94%, to end at 3,978.45 points, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 170.293 points, or 1.51%, to 11,434.741. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 191.66 points, or 0.60%, to 32,120.28. "We hardly survive in this world": New York nail salon workers are fighting for their rights
Nail salons are everywhere in New York, often several on the same street, allowing customers to get mani-pedis at very low prices. But for nail technicians that translates into a very harsh reality: low wages, unpredictible hours, exposure to harsh chemicals and no benefits. Workers - most of them immigrant women - are uniting to get a law passed in New York State's Assembly to establish minimum standards in the industry. 10年来の彼女へのプロポーズをダンサーたちが盛大に手助け 無事成功=イギリス
This is heart-warming moment a man proposed to his girlfriend - with a surprise flash mob dance.Craig Calvert, 33, proposed to his girlfriend of nine years Natalie Hunt, 32, with the help of Apollo Theatre Arts School in Brighton. The video shows the couple arriving at the Upside Down House in the resort - and Craig being asked to film the troupe. More and more dancers arrive as a medley of Natalie's favourite songs plays. After a while, one of the dancers drags him into the mix.Craig then walks nervously through a corridor of dancers, and whips out a little black box, before getting on one knee, to Natalie's surprise. The bride to be then breaks down into sobs of joy and shock, she, of course, said yes.Katy Markey, who runs the school, organised the dance with Craig and choreographed the dance to Natalie's favourite songs.Craig said: "I got in touch with Katy who runs Apollo Theatre Arts via Instagram and she was just brilliant."I picked the songs and she made them into a medley, choreographed the dance and told me where to be! I got lucky contacting her"Natalie had just been taking a nap moments before, and had just finished a pot of spicy prawns, while Craig had been trying to muster up the courage with a few drinks. He explained: "I was stressing a little on how to get her in the right place at the right time. "She then had a little nap while I drank two bottles of beer and a rum chaser to muster up Dutch courage."Just before we got to the square, in true Natalie style, she decided to buy a pot of spicy prawns on the seafront which I made sure she had eaten beforehand."As funny as I would have found it, she wouldn't have forgiven me if she had a pot of prawns in her hand when I popped the question" After all this, the great occasion still went over without a hitch. Craig was worried her soon-to-be fiancé would understand what was happening, but she was caught completely off guard. He said: "I did think she would have clocked what was going on from the music being some of her favourite tracks, or the fact that I was running off to spontaneously dance with strangers."I love that she was completely clueless until the last minute. "In hindsight, it would have probably been kinder if I had made sure she had had a couple of wines before giving her the shock of her life!" Biden's Asia trip to fan confrontation wins no heart, divisive tactic bound to fail
U.S. President Joe Biden visited South Korea and Japan amid public protests in the two Asian countries. During his visit to Japan, Biden attended the summit of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) to hustle the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF). Some experts have said that the IPEF has aroused many doubts in South Korea and Japan, and the United States is doomed to fail in its attempt to form closed and exclusive cliques. SOUNDBITE (Korean): WOO SUKEUN, Head of Institute of East Asian Studies of Korea The IPEF is also a framework that intensifies regional rivalries and tensions. The U.S. says that the framework is inclusive and flexible. But why is it inclusive while excluding specific countries? China is the largest country in the Indo-Pacific region. Why does the framework exclude China?" Woo Sukeun told Xinhua that Biden's visit to East Asia is obviously intended to win over allies such as South Korea and Japan to confront China. SOUNDBITE(Korean): WOO SUKEUN, Head of Institute of East Asian Studies of Korea "I think this is a typical visit with American intentions. The so-called 'alliance' must be based on the premise of 'having a common enemy.' However, with the end of ideological confrontation and the advent of the era of globalization, the concept of 'enemy' has actually disappeared from the international community. Countries maintain friendly relations, but also compete with each other. This kind of relationship is healthy. However, some countries still talk about "alliance" at every turn, designate countries that they are not satisfied with as enemies, and continue to look for opportunities to create conflict and confrontation. The U.S.'s attempt to strengthen the South Korea-U.S.-Japan alliance is intensifying the confrontation with the common 'enemy.' But for South Korea, China is not an enemy, but a friendly neighbor, and a country that we must build closer ties with. According to Woo, issues discussed during Biden's visit will increase geopolitical instability in the region, which will harm its long-term and common interests. SOUNDBITE(Korean): WOO SUKEUN, Head of Institute of East Asian Studies of Korea "At present, the strengthening of the South Korea-U.S.-Japan alliance will further intensify regional tensions, and impede peace and stability in Northeast Asia. It is a move that all parties are very reluctant to see, and it is a move that reverses history." Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Seoul/Tokyo. Russia-Ukraine conflict poses new challenge to global food security
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine poses a new challenge to global food security, affecting many parts of the world. Ukraine and Russia are major global suppliers of agricultural commodities. The two countries, combined, provide 30 percent of the world's wheat and barley needs. SOUNDBITE (English): ANTONIO GUTERRES, UN Secretary-General "It threatens to tip tens of millions of people over the edge into food insecurity, followed by malnutrition, mass hunger and famine, in a crisis that could last for years. In the past year, global food prices have risen by nearly one-third, fertilizer by more than half, and oil prices by almost two-thirds." SOUNDBITE (English): CSABA MOLDICZ, Hungarian expert "Both Ukraine and Russia are basically main grain exporters of the world. And if the grain or goods simply do not come or cannot come from this region, that will definitely impact the prices. And if prices go up, it's always, the have-nots and the poor who suffer from this situation." SOUNDBITE (English): BILLY MCGRANAGHAN, Founder of British charity Dads House "The cost of buying food again went up. A lot of things have doubled in price. Everything was increased, in gas, electric and the shop prices... It affects everyone. Since COVID, since the Ukraine (crisis), It's a horrible situation for everyone, not just for families on low incomes, but everyone." Countries including India and Afghanistan have banned wheat exports with immediate effect to meet local needs and control the price increase at home. The Yemenis commemorate on May 22 annually the unification of North Yemen and South Yemen, which gave birth to the Republic of Yemen. SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): BASSEM SHARAF, Sanaa resident "Today is May 22, which marks Yemen's Unity Day, the 32nd birthday of the Republic of Yemen. On this great day, we wish the country's warring parties can return to the negotiation table and put an end to this war." Police say gunman acted alone in Texas school shooting
EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: PART AUDIO AS INCOMING Texas police told media on Tuesday (May 24) that the shooter at a Texas school that killed 14 students and one teacher likely acted alone. Official details on the circumstances of the midday shooting remained sketchy in the immediate aftermath of the violence, which unfolded at Robb Elementary School in the town of Uvalde, Texas, about 80 miles west of San Antonio. Governor Greg Abbott told reporters the gunman, identified as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, apparently was killed by police officers responding to the scene, and that two of those officers were struck by gunfire, though the governor said their injuries were not serious. In a statement, Uvalde Medical Hospital said it was treating 15 students in its emergency department following the shooting. San Antonio hospital University Health said it had two patients from the incident -- a child and an adult woman, who is in critical condition. The condition of the child is unknown. The Children's Hospital in San Antonio said it is also treating patients from the shooting. WATCH: Divers free trapped whale off Mallorca
In a dramatic underwater rescue, Spanish divers freed a 12-metre long humpback whale entangled in an illegal drift net off the Balearic island of Mallorca. For 32-year-old marine biologist Gigi Torras, the rescue itself and the whale's reaction was the "best ever" birthday present. "It was actually my birthday on Friday when we found the whale so it was the best birthday present ever. Sad but also incredible," Torras told Reuters on Tuesday, explaining that it was only the third time that a humpback has been seen in the Balearic Islands. The weakened whale had been spotted by a ship about three miles (4.83 km) off the Cala Millor beach in the eastern part of the island, prompting Palma de Mallorca's Aquarium marine rescue centre into action. They discovered the whale completely trapped in the red fishnet. It could not even open its mouth. After initial attempts to cut the net from a boat failed, divers from Albatros and Skualo diving centres joined the effort and plunged into the sea to remove the mesh with their knives in a daring 45-minute operation. "The first ten seconds she got a bit nervous, you know, like bubbles everywhere, but then I don't know, call me crazy but I think she knew we were there to help her and she just relaxed and we started working from the front of her mouth backwards," said Torras who owns Albatros diving centre. "We kept cutting and cutting and she kind of gave a little wiggle to get herself out of it," Torras said, adding that the mammal then stayed for a bit to regain her strength in the company of the four divers and even gave what looked like "a little thank you sign" before swimming off. Nicknamed the "walls of death" for the quantity of other sea life they catch in addition to the fish they are set for, drift nets were banned by the United Nations 30 years ago.
