Canadian Embassy in Washington Celebrates Canada Day

The Embassy of Canada to the United States in Washington, DC, celebrated Canada Day on Friday, July 1, with a ball drop and brunch, the embassy said. The Canadian Embassy in DC said it hosted a brunch with 600 guests, among them "expatriates, embassy staff, service-members and their families, and policymakers in DC." Video posted by Julie Ballard shows red-and-white balls reminiscent of the Canadian flag dropping onto guests at the embassy on Friday, as the country celebrated its 155th birthday. Louisiana abortion clinic 'seeing as many patients as we can' with trigger law on hold

PLEASE SEE EDIT 7876 FOR LEGAL REACTION TO THIS CASE For the staff at Hope Medical Group for Women, one of three abortion clinics in Louisiana, it's been a busy week. "We are doing our best, which, we're taking each day as we can, seeing as many patients as we can, while we can," said Hope Medical Group for Women's clinic administrator, Kathaleen Pittman. "We still have a waiting list of over 400." A Louisiana judge on Monday (June 27) temporarily blocked the Republican-led state from enforcing laws banning abortion that were set to take effect after the U.S. Supreme Court's blockbuster decision to end the constitutional right to the procedure nationwide. Orleans Parish Civil District Court Judge Robin Giarrusso issued a temporary restraining order blocking Louisiana from carrying out its ban shortly after Hope Medical Group for Women in Shreveport, one of Louisiana's three abortion clinics, sued. "It was that or face immediate closure or so we thought it was very confusing. You know, Louisiana now has so many different laws and bans and it was just very confusing trying to follow along. So until all of that is sorted out and also to provide women care for as long as possible, we decided, you know, we had no option but to request an TRO (temporary restraining order)," Pittman said. The judge scheduled a July 8 hearing to decide whether to further enjoin enforcement of the abortion ban. "It may be temporary. We may not be able to continue much longer. I hope we can," Pittman said. "But at the very least, in the meantime, there are women that we are seeing, and this means everything to them." The case is one of several challenging Republican-backed abortion laws under state constitutions after the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling. A Utah branch of Planned Parenthood on Saturday (June 25) sued over that state's trigger ban, and abortion rights advocates plan to challenge an Ohio ban on abortions after six weeks that took effect on Friday. In Louisiana, Hope Medical argued the state's laws make it impossible to tell when they are in effect, if one or all of them collectively are in force, and what exact conduct is prohibited, such as if exceptions exist to save a pregnant woman's life. That vagueness has resulted in state and local officials issuing conflicting statements about whether the trigger bans are in effect, the lawsuit in Orleans Civil District Court contended. 'Minute by minute, it's a changing situation,' law professor on Louisiana judge's abortion ruling

A Louisiana judge on Monday (June 27) temporarily blocked the Republican-led state from enforcing laws banning abortion that were set to take effect after the U.S. Supreme Court's blockbuster decision to end the constitutional right to the procedure nationwide. "So her temporary restraining order essentially means that abortions can, at least for now, abortions can resume in Louisiana until the hearing on July 8th," said Lisa Avalos, Associate Professor at Louisiana State University's Law Center. "That is, of course, provided that no higher court, that no state at the state appellate court or the Louisiana Supreme Court intervenes in the case and lifts the stay." Louisiana is one of 13 states with "trigger laws" designed to ban or severely restrict abortions once the Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that recognized a right to the procedure was overturned, as it was on Friday (June 24). Orleans Parish Civil District Court Judge Robin Giarrusso issued a temporary restraining order blocking Louisiana from carrying out its ban shortly after Hope Medical Group for Women in Shreveport, one of Louisiana's three abortion clinics, sued. "Essentially, the, the petitioners in the case argue that the trigger law in Louisiana does not have a clear and unambiguous effective date and that it's not clear who has standing to enforce the law," Avalos said. The judge scheduled a July 8 hearing to decide whether to further enjoin enforcement of the abortion ban. Republican Attorney General Jeff Landry did not immediately respond to requests for comment. He hailed the Supreme Court's decision on Friday, and at an event said that those who challenge the state's bans were "in for a rough fight." The case is one of several challenging Republican-backed abortion laws under state constitutions after the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling. A Utah branch of Planned Parenthood on Saturday (June 25) sued over that state's trigger ban, and abortion rights advocates plan to challenge an Ohio ban on abortions after six weeks that took effect on Friday. On and off screen, Aquaman's Jason Momoa fights for world's oceans

In the superhero blockbuster, Aquaman, popular Hollywood actor Jason Momoa plays the role of protector of the deep, but with the world's oceans under threat in real life, he is also taking the fight off-screen. "Without a healthy ocean life, our planet as we know would not exist," Momoa said with the sea behind him as he took part in an event on a Portuguese beach ahead of the United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon, which starts on Monday (June 27). Around 7,000 people, from heads of state to environmental activists, are expected to attend the conference, which was postponed from 2020 to this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Dozens of youth activists from various countries clapped and cheered as Momoa, who will soon become the U.N. Environment Programme advocate for Life Below Water, spoke about the problems facing the world's oceans. "The time now is to act. Our ocean is in trouble. If we combine ambition, dedication, and hope we can change the outcomes," said Momoa, 42-years old. Momoa is known for his role as Arthur Curry, a half-human, a half-Atlantean character in DC Comics' Aquaman, which takes viewers to the underwater world of the seven seas. Aquaman 2 is scheduled for release in March 2023. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres joined Momoa at the event and apologised on behalf of his generation for not doing enough at the time to tackle climate change, save the ocean and protect biodiversity. "Even today we are moving too slowly...we are still moving in the wrong direction," Guterres said, also pointing a finger at the fossil fuel industry. The ocean covers 70% of the planet's surface, generating over half of the world's oxygen and absorbing 25% of all carbon dioxide emissions but climate change is increasing its temperature and causing sea levels to rise. Eleven million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year, a figure that's expected to triple by 2040 unless production and use of throwaways are reduced, multiple scientific studies show. Fostering high-quality BRICS partnership for the future

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): XI JINPING, Chinese President "The five countries have been working in the spirit of openness, inclusiveness and equality, and in the spirit of pragmatism, innovation and win-win cooperation. They have supported multilateralism and taken part in global governance in the spirit of equity, justice, and mutual assistance. The BRICS countries have become an important force on the international stage to be reckoned with." The BRICS mechanism features five major emerging economies, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Since its inception in 2006, BRICS has become a positive, stable and constructive force in international affairs. In Brazil, an ultra-high-voltage (UHV) direct current (DC) transmission project, and wind power projects constructed by Chinese companies, have offered support to the country for its green energy transformation. SOUNDBITE 2 (Portuguese): LUIS ANTONIO PAULINO, Professor at Sao Paulo State University "Cooperation between China and Brazil, especially in the field of alternative energy, can help Brazil build a more balanced energy supply network." Economy and trade are seen as playing the roles of a "ballast stone" and "propeller" in BRICS cooperation. In 2010, Yang Ming, a Chinese man, and his Russian wife settled down in China's Suifenhe. With the help of BRICS cooperation, Yang has been doing business between China and Russia, while his wife has become an "online influencer" for her livestreaming sales. SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): NINA IVANOVA, Russian livestreamer in China "I'm an 'online influencer' but not so influential. I still need to work hard to bring the best Russian products to China since it's a large market." SOUNDBITE 4 (English): B. R. DEEPAK, Professor of Chinese and China Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi "BRICS has successfully established a mechanism, and one of the most important is this New Development Bank (NDB), which was established in 2014. It's playing an extremely important role in developing hard and social infrastructure across BRICS countries." In 2021, the NDB, also known as the BRICS bank, approved loans for a rural water supply project in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. With 80 million U.S. dollars sanctioned, the project has brought hope to over half a million population suffering from water woes. SOUNDBITE 5 (Hindi): LAMAN, Makroli villager in Himachal Pradesh, India "(The project funded by the NDB) benefits our village because we can get regular water supply." With the implementation of BRICS projects, more companies are shouldering their social responsibilities. Since 2020, Chinese company Wesizwe Platinum under Jinchuan Group has helped improve people's livelihoods in communities in South Africa. SOUNDBITE 6 (Chinese): LI ZHIMIN, CEO of Jinchuan Mining Co. Ltd. "After the China-Africa Jinchuan entered South Africa in 2011, we engaged in projects related to schools, roads, and infrastructure. Our annual spending in the communities reaches around 7 million South African rands (around 437,448 U.S. dollars)." SOUNDBITE 7 (Chinese): XI JINPING, Chinese President "In advancing BRICS cooperation, we need to embrace changes of our times and keep abreast of the times. We need to set clearer priorities in our wide-ranging cooperation, make our cooperation more results-oriented and ensure that its benefits are fully delivered. We need to adjust and improve the substance and modality of our cooperation on the basis of consensus to meet the evolving circumstances and practical needs." As the rotating chair this year, China is promoting a BRICS more focused on high-quality development, opening-up and cooperation, deepening the group's partnership and working toward a future of equity, justice, peace and prosperity for the world. In May 2021, the BRICS Vaccine R&D Center-China Center was launched in Beijing, combining online and offline methods to promote joint research, vaccine development and testing, and factory building. SOUNDBITE 8 (Chinese): MENG WEINING, Deputy General Manager of Sinovac Life Sciences Co., Ltd. "Through the BRICS mechanism, the cooperation established on this basis will be more stable and more efficient." In April 2022, the BRICS Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Cooperation Alliance was officially inaugurated, focusing on promoting substantial cooperation in TVET, and integrating TVET with industry. SOUNDBITE 9 (Chinese): WANG YONGLI, Secretary General of Secretariat of China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) "By promoting scientific research in schools, some projects will be launched, especially for facilitating future development." In addition to BRICS countries, other emerging economies and developing countries also have high expectations for China's chairmanship of BRICS. SOUNDBITE 10 (Chinese): WANG LEI, Director of Center for BRICS Cooperation Studies, Beijing Normal University "BRICS is not a closed-off club. It upholds true multilateralism." SOUNDBITE 11 (Russian): ROZALIA VARFALOVSKAYA, Institute of the Far East of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia "The activities of BRICS in connection with its large territorial, human, economic potential which will be further expanded within the framework of 'BRICS Plus.'" SOUNDBITE 12 (English): ANDRE THOMASHAUSEN, South African economist "President Xi's role in advancing BRICS cooperation has been successful. The equality of states and the paradigm of peaceful cooperation are the only shared future for humanity, and BRICS serves these principles." SOUNDBITE 13 (Portuguese): RONNIE LINS, Director of China-Brazil Center for Research and Business "Another important topic of the BRICS meeting is the 2030 Agenda. (Sustainable development) will help change social inequality and improve the quality of life, not only for us, but for the next generation." SOUNDBITE 14 (English): HERMAN TIU LAUREL, Founder of Philippine BRICS Strategic Studies "BRICS countries, particularly China, bring with it innovative scientific technologies, the economic clout, especially the financial abilities and capabilities, technological abilities. This is essential for achieving the aims of the sustainable development agenda by 2030." "I am convinced that as long as we hoist high the sail of mutual benefit and win-win and keep a steady hand on the tiller of solidarity and cooperation, we will break waves and steer the giant ship of BRICS countries toward a brighter future!" --President Xi's speech at opening ceremony of BRICS Business Forum June 22, 2022 Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Beijing. Pro-Abortion Rights Banner Draped From DC Bridge After Roe v Wade Overturned

A pro-abortion-rights protester scaled the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington, DC, on Friday, June 24. The move came hours after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, which led protesters against the ruling, and groups in support of the decision, to take to the streets in Washington. The climber, who identified himself on Twitter as Guido Reichstadter, unfurled a lengthy green banner from the arch and then shot green powder from a cannon into the air. "If I can make it to the top of this ever-loving bridge, I know you can make it into the street," Reichstadter said, alongside a selfie on the bridge. "If anyone wants to join me up here, it's an easy amble up the arc." The green flag and green powder represent the Green Wave movement in Latin America that helped secure abortion rights through mass civil disobedience, according to Reichstadter. 'As far as crime, I don't see that going up' - criminologist on Supreme Court gun ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday (June 23) struck down as unconstitutional New York state's limits on carrying concealed handguns in public, handing a landmark victory to gun rights advocates in a nation deeply divided over how to address firearms violence. "I don't think it's either going to be as immediate as people are concerned with or as dramatic as people are concerned with it," said John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Department of Public Management Chair, Warren Eller. "As far as crime, I don't see that going up," he added. The 6-3 ruling, with the court's conservative justices in the majority and liberal justices in dissent, found that the state's law, enacted in 1913, violated a person's right to "keep and bear arms" under the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment. The justices overturned a lower court ruling throwing out a challenge to the law by two gun owners and the New York affiliate of the National Rifle Association, an influential gun rights group closely aligned with Republicans. Bangkok salutes those about to rock with air guitars

What happens when Donald Trump,a Bangkok motorbike taxi driver, and a Squid Games contestant take the stage in a Bangkok bar late on a Saturday night? Crowd Scatters During DC Event Prior to Deadly Shooting Incident

A teenage boy was killed, and three other people were injured, in a shooting after a music event in Washington on Sunday, June 19, police said. Washington police chief Robert Contee said officers shut down the unauthorized street event, called Moechella, after two separate incidents occurred on Sunday evening, causing some people to flee the area. The event did not have a permit, he said. Shortly after the event was shut down, four people, including a teenager and a police officer, were shot. Contee said a 15-year-old was killed. Christian Mullins posted this video, which he said showed the reaction to one of the incidents mentioned by police, at 6:47 pm. 'Say the word' - U.S. demonstrations for reparations ahead of Juneteenth

As the second national Juneteenth nears, U.S. activists and their supporters are staging protests and installing demonstrations as they increase their calls for reparations for African Americans. The reparations movement has its roots in the end of slavery of African-Americans in the United States. An 1865 order set aside land for black households, widely remembered as a promise of "forty acres and a mule." The federal government of the United States has never paid any compensation to slaves or their descendants. It has also never issued a formal apology. But according to activists, momentum is building. "Reparations as a terminology is not as much of a third rail in politics and conversation as it used to be," said Mark Thompson, a civil rights and reparations activist. "That progress, quite frankly, exists because of what happened in 2020, where a reckoning, a racial reckoning in this country took place and may very well still be ongoing that people began to say, you know, 'this is something we have to look at and something to consider.'" The Friday (June 17) before Juneteenth saw more than a hundred participate in a reparations protest throughout the New Jersey city of Newark. "It's to satisfy our anger and our frustration with what's going on in the community," said protest participant, 18-year old Newark student, Amirr Edwards. Among other actions throughout the country included the placing by activists a Pan-African flag made out of flowers on the Ellipse in front of the White House. On it, they inscribed a message calling for the passage of U.S. House Resolution 40, which would sanction the creation of a commission that would formally study reparations. The actions are building on momentum created by a host of measures enacted on the local level seeking to remedy the losses created by slavery and its legacy in the United States. "It's a broad range. We're talking about hundreds of initiatives from Portland, Oregon, to Tullahassee, Oklahoma, to Amherst, Massachusetts," said Dreisen Heath, a racial justice researcher at Human Rights Watch. Experts range in their calculations in trying to measure the financial loss for African-Americans as a result of slavery and its consequences. One such researcher is University of Connecticut's Thomas Creamer. After measuring the hours in unpaid labor completed by African-Americans, he said, "it would be [worth] $20.9 trillion at 3% interest. Only 3% is not even enough to make up for inflation… it's a huge amount because the injustice is enormous." Not everyone agrees. "While 30% of white Americans now appear to endorse reparations as monetary payments to Black Americans, I think that there is another 30% that is, is extremely recalcitrant about any policy proposal that would improve the condition of black Americans in some significant way," said William Darity Jr, a professor in African-American studies at Duke University. "And this is a 30% of the white population that retains a strong philosophical and emotional allegiance to the premises of the Confederacy." But reparations as a contemporary issue could present a problem for the incumbent Democratic administration, said Tompson, who is also the host of the podcast, "Make it Plain." "If you don't set up H.R. 40… that could jeopardize the support that [U.S. President] Joe Biden and the party enjoy when it comes to African-American voters and sometimes take for granted." Ex-Trump adviser Navarro pleads not guilty to contempt of Congress charges

EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: THIS EDIT INCLUDES ONE WHITE FLASH Former Republican President Donald Trump's adviser Peter Navarro pleaded not guilty on Friday (June 17) to two misdemeanor counts of contempt of Congress, after he refused to provide testimony or documents to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee investigating the January 2021 attack at the Capitol. Navarro, who appeared in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia for his arraignment on Friday, wrote a book after he left the White House in which he talked about a plan to delay Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's victory known as "Green Bay Sweep," according to the indictment. He described the plan as the "last, best chance to snatch a stolen election from the Democrats' jaws of deceit," the indictment says. Navarro, a longtime China hawk who advised Trump on trade issues and also served on the COVID-19 task force, had been representing himself since he was criminally charged. But after Friday's hearing, he told reporters outside the courthouse that "being put in leg irons and having people wanting to put me in prison" had changed his view about needing legal representation. 'Everything's at stake' - gun control advocate on NY gun case before Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court this month is due to issue a decision on a New York state case that could bring a sweeping expansion of gun rights. The justices are expected to rule by the end of June in a challenge by two firearms owners and the New York affiliate of the National Rifle Association, an influential gun rights group closely aligned with Republicans, to that state's restrictions on carrying concealed handguns in public. "Everything's at stake. New York State has had since 1911 one of the most effective state level gun control laws in the nation. It's called the Sullivan Law," said Richard Aborn, President of the Citizens Crime Commission of New York City. "We may go from a situation where very few people carry guns concealed to a situation where many, many people carry guns concealed. And we won't know how many people are out there." Oral arguments in the case held last November indicated that the court's 6-3 conservative majority was ready to shoot down New York's restrictions. Such a ruling could set the stage for other state-level gun restrictions to be undone, including bans on assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines. The ruling in the New York case could clarify the way judges evaluate whether firearms restrictions violate the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms - a potential new test emphasizing the provision's text and the history and tradition of gun regulations dating back centuries. "I think we are at the beginning of a never-ending litany of challenges to gun control laws throughout the United States," Aborn said. "And the research is crystal clear that in those states that have more vigorous gun control laws, they have lower levels of gun death, both suicides, accidents and intentional death. So, this is a real public safety issue." Firearms ownership has been one of the most hotly contested issues in the United States. Gun rights advocates, including most elected Republicans, staunchly maintain that the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to bear arms. Gun control supporters say permissive U.S. gun laws lead to needless deaths. Protesters holding an Extinction Rebellion banner joined a pro-abortion rights protest in Washington, DC, on June 13, in anticipation of a Supreme Court opinion on Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization, which could come as soon as Monday. The court does not publicize in advance which opinions are due to be issued on which days. U.S. Capitol riot hearing shows Trump allies, daughter rejected fraud claims

The congressional committee investigating the attack on the U.S. Capitol by Donald Trump's supporters trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat presented testimony on Thursday (June 9) showing that close allies - even his daughter - rejected his false claims of voting fraud. The U.S. House of Representatives select committee probing the Jan. 6, 2021, assault also showed graphic footage of thousands of rioters attacking police and smashing their way into the Capitol. It was the first of six planned hearings intended to show that the Republican former president conspired to unlawfully hold onto power. The Democratic-led committee presented video of testimony from notable Trump administration figures including his daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, Attorney General William Barr, campaign spokesperson Jason Miller and General Mark Milley. It also showed part of Trump's incendiary speech before the attack in which he repeated false election fraud claims and directed his supporters' anger at Vice President Mike Pence, who was at the Capitol overseeing congressional certification of Democrat Joe Biden's election win - a process the riot failed to prevent. Some congressional Republicans in the days after the attack condemned Trump, but most have since changed their tune, supporting him and downplaying the day's violence. Trump himself has gone after Republicans who voted to impeach him for his actions, backing primary challengers to them ahead of the Nov. 8 midterm elections that will determine control of Congress for the following two years. Democratic committee chair Bennie Thompson said Trump was at the center of a conspiracy to thwart American democracy and block the peaceful transfer of power. "Jan. 6 was the culmination of an attempted coup, a brazen attempt, as one writer put it shortly after Jan. 6, to overthrow the government," Thompson said. "The violence was no accident. It was Trump's last stand." Barr in videotaped testimony said: "I made it clear I did not agree with the idea of saying the election was stolen and putting out this stuff, which I call the bullshit. And, you know, I didn't want to be a part of it." Barr's view convinced Trump's daughter. "I respect Attorney General Barr. So I accepted what he was saying," Ivanka Trump said in videotaped testimony. Trump, who is publicly flirting with another White House run in 2024, issued a statement before the hearing calling the committee "political Thugs." "Aware of the rioters' chants to 'hang Mike Pence,' the president responded with this sentiment: 'Well, maybe our supporters have the right idea,'" said Representative Liz Cheney, one of the two Republicans on the nine-member panel and its vice chairperson. Since leaving office last year, Trump has kept up his false claims that his 2020 election loss to Biden was the result of widespread fraud, an assertion rejected by numerous courts, state election officials and members of his own administration. "We can't live in a world where the incumbent administration stays in power based on its view, unsupported by specific evidence, that there was fraud in the election," Barr, who resigned about two weeks before the Capitol attack, said in the video. Kushner was shown on video dismissing threats by some Trump aides to resign after the riot as "whining." The hearing also featured two witnesses who testified in person: U.S. Capitol police officer Caroline Edwards, who sustained a brain injury in the attack, and Nick Quested, a filmmaker who captured footage of the far-right Proud Boys group, accused of helping to plan the attack. Edwards described insults hurled by rioters at her during the melee but said she was proud of fighting them off even after being injured. "I was slipping in people's blood," Edwards said. "It was carnage. It was chaos." "What I saw was just a war scene," Edwards added. The mob attacked police, sent lawmakers and Pence fleeing for their safety and caused millions of dollars in damage. Four people died that day, one fatally shot by police and the others of natural causes. More than 100 police officers were injured, and one died the next day. Four officers later died by suicide. To her fellow Republicans - who voted to remove her from her House leadership position - Cheney offered a warning: "There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain." Cheney, whose father Dick Cheney served as U.S. vice president from 2001 to 2009 under President George W. Bush, noted that multiple Republican congressmen contacted the White House after Jan. 6 to seek pardons for what she said was their role in trying to overturn the election. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Thursday underscored the partisan lens through which many Americans view the assault. It found that among Republicans about 55% believed the false claim that left-wing protesters led the attack and 58% believed most of the protesters were law-abiding. Cheney and Thompson outlined plans for the remaining hearings. One will focus on Trump's efforts to pressure Pence to refuse to count electoral votes. Other future hearings will feature testimony by Greg Jacob, Pence's former general counsel, about Trump's demands. Marc Short, Pence's former chief of staff, is also expected to testify. 'I experienced it': Documentary filmmaker offers glimpse into Jan. 6

The first of six planned congressional hearings into the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol by then-President Donald Trump supporters made a prime-time television debut on Thursday (June 9). The U.S. House of Representatives select committee probing the Jan. 6, 2021, assault showed graphic footage of thousands of rioters attacking police and smashing their way into the Capitol. It was the first of six planned hearings intended to show that the Republican former president conspired to unlawfully hold onto power. The hearing also featured two witnesses who testified in person: U.S. Capitol police officer Caroline Edwards, who sustained a brain injury in the attack, and Nick Quested, a filmmaker who captured footage of the far-right Proud Boys group, accused of helping to plan the attack. Nick Quested, documentary filmmaker who followed the right-wing Proud Boys protesters on Jan. 6, said, "I was surprised at the size of the group, the anger and profanity." 'We are bleeding out and you are not there' - Uvalde doctor tells Congress

Families of victims of gun violence pleaded with members of Congress to do more during a hearing on Wednesday (June 08) that followed a spate of mass shootings across the United States in recent weeks has killed dozens. A doctor who saw the bodies of children killed in a Texas elementary school massacre come into his hospital told members of Congress that they needed to act. "We are lying on the operating table, riddled with bullets like the children of Robb Elementary and so many other schools. We are bleeding out and you are not there," pediatrician Roy Guerrero said. "I do my job… please, please do yours," he added. Earlier, 11-year-old Miah Cerrillo, a fourth-grade survivor the shooting in Uvalde, Texas that killed 17 children and two teachers told U.S. lawmakers that after the gunman murdered her teacher and friends, she smeared blood on herself in a desperate bid for survival. The congressional panel is meeting as a bipartisan group of senators negotiates to see if there is any compromise on gun safety that Democrats and Republicans can agree to. With Democrats and Republicans deeply divided on guns, the talks have focused on modest goals including encouraging states to pass "red flag" laws to deny firearms to people judged a risk to themselves or the public and federal funding to improve school security. Republicans have objected to proposals such as limited sales of the assault-style rifles used in the Uvalde massacre and another mass shooting at a Buffalo, New York, grocery story that killed 10 Black victims. The sobbing parents of one of the dead Uvalde students urged Congress to take tough steps to control gun sales. "Somewhere out there, there's a mom listening to our testimony ... not knowing that our reality will one day be hers unless we act now," said Kimberly Rubio, mother of murdered daughter Lexi. Zeneta Everhart, the mother of Zaire Goodman, who was wounded in the Buffalo massacre, the alleged work of an avowed white supremacist, asked the committee to imagine what it would be like to clean the bullet wounds of one of their children, as she has done for her son. Another witness, Lucretia Hughes of the DC Project Women for Gun Rights, criticized the idea of more gun control laws. "How about letting me defend myself from evil? You don't think that I'm capable and trustworthy to handle a firearm?" she asked. Hughes said her 19-year-old son was shot dead in April 2016 by a person with an illegally obtained gun. Public opinion polls show a majority of Americans favor steps to expand background checks of prospective gun buyers and other moves to rein in spiking gun violence. Meanwhile, the full House of Representatives was debating a bill to raise the minimum age to 21 from 18 on purchases of certain firearms and toughen prohibitions on untraceable guns. That bill is highly unlikely to pass the Senate, where it would require the votes of 10 Republicans. Biden demands strong gun measures; says 'can't fail the American people again'

Declaring "Enough, enough!" U.S. President Joe Biden on Thursday (June 2) urged Congress to ban assault weapons, expand background checks and implement other sensible gun control measures to address a string of mass shootings to address a string of mass shootings that have struck the United States. Speaking from the White House, in a speech broadcast live in primetime, Biden asked a country stunned by the recent shootings of school children in Texas, at a medical building in Oklahoma and at a Buffalo, New York, grocery story how much it would take. "For God's sake, how much more carnage are we willing to accept?" Biden asked. The president, a Democrat, called for a number of measures that have historically been blocked by Republicans in Congress, including raising the age at which adults can buy guns and repealing the liability shield that protects gun manufacturers from being sued for violence perpetrated by people carrying their weapons. "We can't fail the American people again," Biden said, pressing Republicans to allow bills including gun control measures to come up for a vote. The United States, which has a higher rate of gun deaths than any other wealthy nation, has been shaken in recent weeks by the high-profile mass shootings at a grocery story in New York, an elementary school in Texas that killed 19 children, and a medical building in Oklahoma. Gun safety advocates have pushed Biden to take stronger measures on his own to curb gun violence, but the White House wants Congress to pass legislation that would have more lasting impact than any presidential order. A U.S. House of Representatives committee on Thursday was working on a bill aimed at toughening national gun laws, though the measure has little chance of passing the Senate. Biden's evening address was aimed at putting further pressure on lawmakers and keeping the issue at the forefront of voters' minds. He has made only a handful of evening speeches from the White House during his term, including one on the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 and one about the Texas shooting last week. More than 18,000 people have died from gun violence in the United States in 2022, including through homicide and suicide, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit research group. Canada, Australia and Britain all passed stricter gun laws after mass shootings in their countries, banning assault weapons and increasing background checks. America has experienced two decades of massacres in schools, stores and places of work and worship without any such legislation. A broad majority of American voters, both Republicans and Democrats, favor stronger gun control laws, but Republicans in Congress and some moderate Democrats have blocked such legislation for years. Prices of shares in gun manufacturers rose on Thursday. Efforts to advance gun control measures have boosted firearm share prices after other mass shootings as investors anticipated that gun purchases would increase ahead of stricter regulations. As president, Biden has called on Congress to reinstate a ban on assault weapons and pass measures to require universal background checks for those who purchase guns. In the aftermath of the Texas shooting, he urged the country to take on the powerful pro-gun lobby that backs politicians who oppose such legislation. The Senate is split, with 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans, and a law must have 60 votes to overcome a maneuver known as the filibuster, which means any law would need rare bipartisan support. While Biden and Congress explore compromises, the Supreme Court is due to decide a major case that could undermine new efforts to enact gun control measures while making existing ones vulnerable to legal attack. Congo's first female to coach men's team targets regional championship

As the first female coach training a men's soccer team in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Salama Miruho Djasmine is considered a trailblazer, but she wears that status lightly, preferring to focus on the job at hand. Djasmine is head coach at Daring Club Virunga, one of the top teams in North Kivu province, and with the National Football League expected to soon publish its calendar of fixtures for next season, her mind is on training and match preparation. "With the work I have done with my players, I feel confident. We are now just waiting for the National Football League to publish the calendar - we must be ready for that. It's the reason we are always training, because players cannot stay without training. Training helps prepare for matches. For now, we are still waiting for them to decide. At the moment I still continue to supervise the players so that when the championship resumes, we are ready," Djasmine said in an interview at the club's ground, in the eastern city of Goma, as her team performed various drills. Soccer is a family affair for the 33-year-old Djasmine. Her father was a referee, and her five brothers all played the sport. She was a player too, at the club AS Simba, until she decided to train and qualify as a professional coach. She first came to DC Virunga as an intern, but following a dispute at the club the coaching team left and she found herself promoted to head coach. She said she anticipated potential difficulties due to her gender, but in fact there were none. "These players listen to me and follow instructions and do this work well. I feel very good, I am comfortable," she said. ""It is a big pleasure, I think it is the first time not just in Goma -- in this town, but in the whole of the country," said footballer Melly Mongolare who added that Djasmine was a source of pride for the Congolese club. Biden asks Americans to stand up to gun lobby after Texas 'massacre'

U.S. President Joe Biden asked Americans to stand up to the gun lobby and pressure members of Congress to pass sensible gun laws after the killing of at least 18 children and an adult in a Texas school shooting on Tuesday (May 24). Authorities said an 18-year-old gunman opened fire at an elementary school in south Texas, about 80 miles (130 km) west of San Antonio before he apparently was killed by police officers. "I hoped when I became president I would not have to do this, again," a visibly shaken Biden said, decrying the death of "beautiful, innocent" second, third and fourth graders in "another massacre." Their parents "will never see their child again, never have them jump in bed and cuddle with them," he said. "As a nation, we have to ask, 'When in God's name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby?'" "We have to act," he said and suggested reinstating the assault weapons ban and other "common sense gun laws." Biden ordered the flags at the White House and at U.S. federal and public buildings to be flown at half-staff until sunset on May 28. 'This time has to be different' - Parkland shooting survivor urges lawmakers to act

David Hogg, a survivor of the 2018 Parkland, Florida, high school shooting and a gun-control activist, believes the cycle of legislative inaction may finally end following Tuesday's (May 24) deadly massacre at a Texas elementary school, which killed 19 children and two teachers. "It just has to be different," he said in an interview outside the White House on Wednesday (May 25). "I want anything. We've gotta save lives now." Hundreds of people have died in mass shootings at schools, churches, stores and movie theaters over the years but Congress has failed to unite on legislation. Republicans assert a right to bear arms protected by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The political stalemate angers Democrats. But Hogg urged lawmakers to compromise and make changes, however small. "Even if it saves just one life, because it's an updated background checks bill, or an expansion of extreme risk protection orders, or anything like that," he said. In 2018, a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killed 17 students and educators. Hogg and other student survivors later held "March For Our Lives" rallies calling for stricter gun control - a call he has been passionately advocating for ever since. Hogg said he is angry to see yet another school shooting unfold but scoffs at some Republicans' calls to arm teachers. "If anything is a slippery slope it's that, because what's after that? Arming kids?" he said. "I don't want that to be the reality that my kids in the future grow up in - and I don't think most Americans do either." While Hogg praised U.S. President Joe Biden for "doing more than any president in American history" on gun control, he said he is not doing nearly enough. Until then, the now-college student said he would continue to urge the White House and Congress to act. "I don't like talking about the worst day of my life every single day," he said. "But I have to because our government is not working." "What are we doing," Senator Chris Murphy asks after 15 killed in Texas school shooting

Democratic U.S. Senator Chris Murphy on Tuesday (May 24) implored his colleagues to act to combat gun violence hours after a mass shooter killed 14 Texas school children. Murphy, who before his election to the Senate represented the Connecticut congressional district where a gunman killed 26 young children and educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, urged his colleagues to craft legislation to restrict the proliferation of guns. "I'm here on this floor to beg, to literally get down on my hands and knees and beg my colleagues: find a path forward here. Work with us to find a way to pass laws that make this less likely," Murphy said in a fiery floor speech. "By doing something, we at least stop sending this quiet message of endorsement to these killers whose brains are breaking, who see the highest levels of government doing nothing, shooting after shooting. What are we doing? Why are we here? What are we doing?" he said. Previous efforts to pass new federal restrictions on guns failed following the Sandy Hook shooting, a 2017 attack on Republican members of Congress practicing baseball, and an attack just 10 days ago at a Buffalo, New York, grocery store. The U.S. Supreme Court in the coming weeks is expected to rule on a case that could greatly expand the right to carry concealed handguns, in a challenge to a New York state law that opponents say violates the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Murphy said he would be happy to work on a bipartisan solution, saying a bill needed to "show progress" and not necessarily be a perfect legislative fix. Anti-lockdown protesters returns to DC area more than a month after truck convoy left

Several dozen anti-lockdown protesters returned to the DC area on Tuesday (May 17) afternoon 47 days after the People's Convoy, a group led by truckers, left the Washington DC area after weeks of protesting. Still calling itself The People's Convoy this iteration of the group had six 18-wheelers and several dozen other protesters. They held a rally at the Hagerstown Speedway at 6:00 pm. The group is a fraction of the size of the original convoy, which filled the speedway parking area and overflowed into the surrounding neighborhoods with hundreds of trucks and automobiles. The group does not have set plans yet, according to protesters, but some want to do more than the previous protest model of driving around the Washington beltway, a highway that surrounds Washington D.C. CONTAINS PROFANE LANGUAGE Abortion rights supporters marched to the Supreme Court on Saturday (May 14) as part of a wave of rallies across the United States, fueled by the prospect that the Supreme Court may soon overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide a half century ago. An unprecedented Supreme Court leak two weeks ago showed the conservative majority of justices may soon reverse the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling in 1973 that established abortion rights. Galvanized by the prospect, protesters marched under the slogan "Bans Off Our Bodies" across the country on Saturday, the start of what organizers said would be a "summer of rage." In Washington, a crowd that organizers estimated at 20,000 people massed at the Washington Monument and braved a light drizzle to march along the National Mall past the U.S. Capitol to the Supreme Court itself. The rally erupted in chants as the marchers neared the marbled columns of the courthouse. Surrounded by police was a group of a few dozen counter-demonstrators holding signs that read: "Stop killing babies," and "Face it... abortion kills a person." The encounter between the two sides grew tense at times and profanities were exchanged. The court's final ruling, which could return the power to ban abortion to state legislatures, is expected in June. About half of the 50 states are poised to ban or severely restrict abortion almost immediately should Roe be struck down. Protesters rally for abortion rights in Washington DC

Abortion rights demonstrators rallied in Washington DC on Saturday (May 14), joining thousands gathered for protests across the United States. The series of protests started what organizers said would be "a summer of rage" if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide. Planned Parenthood, Women's March and other abortion rights groups organized more than 400 "Bans Off Our Bodies" marches for Saturday, with the largest turnouts expected in New York City, Washington, Los Angeles and Chicago. Abortion rights backers in Washington met at the Washington Monument with plans to walk to the Supreme Court. Demonstrator Kristin Meyering said that she was worried about disadvantaged women receiving unsafe abortions. Another protester, Julia Collins, brought her baby and said she hoped her daughter. would one day have the option for an abortion if necessary. Ellen Harrison said that she does not favor abortion, but she does support a woman's freedom to choose what is best for her. The demonstrations are in response to the May 2 leak of a draft opinion showing the court's conservative majority ready to reverse the 1973 landmark decision that established a federal constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy. The court's final ruling, which could give states the power to ban abortion, is expected in June. About half of U.S. states could ban or severely restrict abortion soon after a ruling vacating Roe. "Lead with your values," Apple's Tim Cook tells graduates at DC commencement speech

Apple CEO Tim Cook on Friday (May 13) gave an impassioned commencement speech to deaf and hard of hearing students at Washington D.C.'s Gallaudet University. Cook called on graduates to lead with their "values" as they headed out into the professional world. "My values have also helped me persevere through the tough decisions in both my professional and personal life. When people question the financial wisdom of our commitment to sustainability, I spoke my values when I made it clear that fighting climate change is and will remain one of our most important goals," he said. "And in my own life it was my values that called me to tell the world I am gay so that I might bring a measure of hope to people still hiding who they are from the world," he added. Cook's commencement speech came just days after Saudi Arabia's fossil fuel giant Aramco overtook Apple as the world's largest company by market capitalization on Wednesday (May 11), based on daily closing prices, as Apple's shares fell more than 5%.
