    トランプ支持者、議会に乱入で騒然

No: 3198 USA-ELECTION/PROTESTS-UPDATE-CHAOS Chaos at U.S. Capitol as Trump supporters clash with police STORY: Chaos erupted at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday (January 06) as a mob of President Donald Trump's supporters clashed with police and then stormed the building in a violent scene that's been likened to an attempted coup or an insurrection. Lawmakers were evacuated as the rioters breached the barricades, interrupting the certification the results of the presidential election. Thousands of protesters, waving "Don't Tread on Me" flags and shouting "stop the steal," flooded Capitol Hill and paraded through National Statuary Hall, creating a tense standoff with law enforcement that dissolved into violence. Tear gas was reportedly deployed in the Rotunda and shots were fired. Earlier protesters had massed outside the Capitol building, with police using teargas and pepper spray to keep them back. Medics could be seen giving CPR to one injured protester. CNN reported that a woman was in critical condition after being shot in the chest on the Capitol grounds. On MSNBC, a person covered in blood was seen been wheeled away from the building on a stretcher. Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer issued a statement calling on Trump to call off the protesters. Later on Wednesday Trump posted a video calling on protesters to go home, and saying "we have to have peace." The governors of Maryland and Virginia said they would dispatch the state troopers and activate the National Guard to help quell the violence. Kayleigh McEnany, the president's press secretary, also said that federal officers and National Guard would be deployed. Images from inside the House chamber showed police with their guns drawn as protesters banged on the doors. Video images showed the demonstrators smashing windows and climbing into the building. Igor Bobic, a reporter for HuffPost, tweeted that the president's supporters eventually entered the chamber, with one taking the dais to yell, "Trump won that election!" Capitol Police have asked for additional law enforcement assistance, while D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser ordered a citywide curfew beginning at 6 p.m. The protesters were heeding the calls of President Trump, who has falsely claimed that the Nov. 3 presidential election was thrown to his Democratic challenger Biden by widespread voter fraud. His claims have lacked evidence and have suffered one legal setback after another. In an address to the nation, President-Elect Joe Biden called on Trump to speak out and "demand an end to this siege." Before the protests escalated, thousands of Trump supporters gathered in Washington, D.C. this week to take part in what has been billed as the Save America Rally held on the National Mall. The president addressed the cheering crowd shortly before Congress met to certify the results. "We will never give up. We will never concede," Trump said. Spurred on by his bellicose rhetoric, a typically ceremonial counting of the electoral votes submitted by each state was overshadowed and marred by clashes between protesters and police. Even before protesters flooded the Capitol, the vote certification had become unusually contentious. Republicans issued objections to certifying Arizona's electoral votes, which closed the joint session and kicked off debate in both chambers over whether or not there were election irregularities that would nullify Biden's victory in the state.

Interview: Ukraine sees opportunities in China's opening-up policies, business leader says

Ukrainian business sees great opportunities in China's opening-up to the outside world, a Ukrainian business leader has said. "Thanks to the openness shown by China, the trade and economic relations between our countries have invariably been strengthened in the past five years," Gennadiy Chizhikov, president of the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), told Xinhua in a recent interview. China has become Ukraine's largest trade partner since 2019, he said, noting that bilateral trade grew by almost 20 percent in 2020 amid the pandemic while Ukrainian exports to China increased by over 70 percent. Chizhikov is confident that the current positive trends can be maintained, since Ukraine and China have created a strong institutional base, including the regular meetings of the Commission on Cooperation between the two governments, for strengthening bilateral trade and economic ties. Chizhikov stressed that the CCI has opened its offices in five Chinese provinces and participated in the largest exhibitions held in China, which gave great opportunities for Ukrainian businesses to enter the Chinese market. "We see opportunities not only for the trade and economic relations development, but also for active joint scientific research," he said. "Over 34 joint research projects are currently being implemented," Chizhikov said. The Ukrainian business leader also noted that Ukraine has great potentials not only in industrial and scientific fields, but also in agriculture as Ukraine ranks first globally in sunflower oil production and among the top three in terms of corn and wheat production. Ukraine will consistently increase yields with the introduction of new technologies, making the country eventually an important food supplier to the Chinese market, Chizhikov said. Chizhikov also hailed China's policies and progress on environmental protection, poverty alleviation and business support, saying they are very crucial. "This makes it possible for other countries, including Ukraine, to actively join the relevant processes in terms of cooperation, trade and technology exchange. We would like to wish China and the Chinese people the fulfillment of the goals and objectives set for the next five years," concluded the CCI president. Art exhibition on nature, love illustrated by cross-cultural women unveiled in Sydney

An art exhibition featuring narratives of nature and love by cross-cultural women was unveiled in Sydney recently. The exhibition, held by the China Cultural Center in Sydney, presents 15 contemporary art works about water, air and love by eight Australian and Chinese Australian female artists. In the form of painting, photography, video or sculpture, the artists share their understandings about the world and the importance of environmental sustainability. SOUNDBITE (English): ANNE ZAHALKA, Photo-media artist "It's wonderful to come together with other artists from different cultural backgrounds. My own background is from a migrant family, refugee family. And it's often impacts and informs the way I think about my place here. Women kind of being affected and also contributing with a strong voice to looking at how we might trade more carefully on this planet." As a photo media artist, Zahalka has exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally for over 30 years and has held over 40 solo exhibitions. She brought three pictures to the Sydney show combining the images of industrialized cities and wild animals, displaying her reflections on the changing relationship between people and the nature. "These works were developed during a visit to Mumbai, to look at dioramas in natural history museums and look at the record that's been made about places that now have largely disappeared, or been affected by human development and so on," she said. The art exhibition held in Sydney is also an event to mark the upcoming International Women's Day on March 8. "This exhibition is about creating invaluable dialogues between women of different cultures, empowering women to voice their concerns in relations to the environment and to think differently in offering different solutions," said curator Nicolas Tsoutas. Xiao Xiayong, director of the China Cultural Center in Sydney, said the center hopes the exhibition can remind people of the importance of ecosystems and how much people rely on them while helping deepen cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and Australia. As artists, we never thought we could help fight Covid, and less so in conjunction with the Modernist Site of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Private Foundation." The artists featured in the exhibition include such world renowned names as Antoni Tapies and Miquel Barcelo, as well as contemporary artists, such as Carlos Azcon, Ma Jose Hernandez and the exhibition's curator, Patricia Cancelo. SOUNDBITE 2 (Spanish): PATRICIA CANCELO, exhibition curator "The first thing was to find people with a sense of solidarity, some of whom I know personally and who have exhibited in many places, but above all people interested in what was going on out there." The idea for the exhibition came at the start of the health crisis when Cancelo donated 10 sculptures to raise funds for a project to study the effects of coronavirus on pregnant women. SOUNDBITE 3 (Spanish): PATRICIA CANCELO, exhibition curator "Right now solidarity is not about doing something that makes you feel good or shows that you're a good person, right now it is a responsibility and we have to help each other." The Solidarity Art exhibition is open every day until March 26 and is free to enter. Xinhua News Correspondents reporting from Barcelona, Spain. (XHTV)

Displaced Yemenis near Sanaa receive humanitarian food aid

Having suffered the lack of food and water, the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Al-Azraqeen camp in the north of Yemen's capital Sanaa, received food aid from a charity group on Friday. Around 60 families are living inside the tatty camp, who have been suffering a lack of food, drinkable water, and other life necessities. SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): ABDULLAH OBAID, Internally displaced person at the camp "We are all homeless refugees. Today, a charity group came to provide us with food. There are flour and other things. But the aid is actually not enough and won't last for a month. We hope other organizations can give us more help." The United Nations said that the lack of funds for humanitarian operations in 2020 has led to the closure of many aid programs, and many hungry families in northern Yemen are getting only half as much food aid as they should. SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): FATIK ALRODINI, Chief of the Muna Relief "Today we came to the Azraqeen camp to offer food aid to the displaced people here. Our food ration can sustain a man for six months by the standard of the World Food Program and that of Yemen's food security authority. The ration consists of 75 kilograms of flour, 8 liters of cooking oil, 36 cans of beans, 1.5 kilograms of sugar, and 1 kilogram of sugar." As a rare smile returns to the faces of the IDPs in the camp, no one knows when will they get their next food ration. SOUNDBITE 3 (Arabic): ABDULLAH OBAID, Internally displaced person at the camp "I hope this war can end soon and the blockade is lifted. When we have peace in the country, we will be relieved from the suffering and won't be hungry anymore." The impoverished Arab country has been locked in a civil war since late 2014, when the Houthi militia overran much of the country and seized all northern provinces, including the capital Sanaa. Mystery person infected with COVID "variant of concern" found in UK: health secretary

British Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed Friday that the mystery person infected with the coronavirus "variant of concern" first emerged in Brazil has now been found in Britain. Speaking at a Downing Street press briefing, Hancock said he is "delighted" in the success of the "flat out work" of health officials to identify the missing case. The "best evidence" shows that the person has stayed at home and there's no sign there has been any onward transmission, said Hancock. However, testing will be increased in the local area as a precaution, he added. The latest development came after six cases of the P1 variant were found in Britain last week, but one of the cases had been unidentified as this person failed to complete the test registration card properly. There are concerns that this variant may spread more easily, might evade the immune system, or that vaccines might be less effective against it. The health secretary has said the current vaccines deployed in Britain had "not yet been studied against this variant" but that work is under way to "understand what impact it might have." SOUNDBITE (English): MATT HANCOCK, British Health Secretary "One of the most dangerous things about this virus - one of those dangerous things - is that around one third of those who get it don't get any symptoms at all and yet can still pass the disease on to others. So rapid, regular testing is a critical part of our response. And we can do so much more because of the huge capacity we've built up in NHS Test and Trace. I would urge you if you're eligible to participate in one of these regular testing programmes like I do, because that is how we will keep this virus under control as we continue to roll out the vaccine." Hancock also confirmed that two-fifths of Britain's entire adult population of have now been vaccinated. The government is "on course" to offering a first vaccine dose to all adults by the end of July, he added. Nearly 21 million people in Britain have been given the first jab of the coronavirus vaccine, according to the latest official figures. England is currently under the third national lockdown since outbreak of the pandemic in the country. Similar restriction measures are also in place in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. On Feb. 22, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his long-anticipated "roadmap" exiting the lockdown. Schools in England will reopen from March 8 as first part of the four-step plan, which Johnson said was designed to be "cautious but irreversible". China "very, very attractive" to foreign investors: Honeywell senior executive

Buoyed by its robust economic growth and continuous efforts to improve business environment, China, a longtime popular destination for foreign investment, is becoming increasingly attractive, a senior executive from Honeywell has said. China's economy is "very dynamic" and has huge potential to grow further, Shane Tedjarati, president of Global High Growth Regions of the U.S. industrial conglomerate, told Xinhua in a recent interview. SOUNDBITE 1 (English): SHANE TEDJARATI, President of Honeywell Global High Growth Regions "China's own economy is very dynamic, very prosperous, and it's going to grow significantly. So and many global multinational companies, including Honeywell, have significant stakes in China. So our China growth will be a very big part of our global organic growth. So that would be the case for many companies. Along that path, it's also becoming a very, very attractive market to invest. It has been attractive for the past 30 years, but it becomes more and more attractive as China decides to open up its economy even more, to reform its economic opening even more." Tedjarati, who has worked and lived in China for more than 20 years, said "China has definitely made a lot of strides in opening up its economy" and refining its business climate for foreign investors. SOUNDBITE 2 (English): SHANE TEDJARATI, President of Honeywell Global High Growth Regions "I think that if you take a long-term view, China has definitely made a lot of strides in opening up its economy. And I think there's no doubt that the China of today is no resemblance to China of even 10 years ago, how much for China of 20 or 30 years ago? American companies and multinational companies have been in China for a long time. Those who came like we did all in becoming local have a much easier time because you know we are part of the local artery of China. I think this shortening of the negative list, I think, other areas where China has opened up the new agreements that China has signed with Europe and other areas of the world continue to show that China wants to open up. I would say you know I am more positive than negative, because I think we see that overall things are opening. China has the intention to further open." Honeywell's business operations in China can be traced back to several decades ago. Since China introduced its reform and opening-up policies, Honeywell's investment has been on the fast track to join hands with Chinese local partners in building a connected, smarter, safer, more sustainable world. Today, China is Honeywell's largest single market outside the United States, and one of the company's most important sources of growth, according to the company. Tedjarati said Honeywell will continue to follow its strategies of "East for East" and "East to Rest," further expand its business presence in China, and join hands with local partners to meet the demands of Chinese businesses and consumers. SOUNDBITE 3 (English): SHANE TEDJARATI, President of Honeywell Global High Growth Regions "The strategy is we innovate in China, which we call "East for East," for China's solution to China's huge issues and challenges that they have. Then those innovations would also be applicable to the problems of the rest of the emerging markets of the world, or even maybe developed markets of the world. And that business really grew because China's challenges is the world's challenges. If you can solve it in China with China's speed and China's price points, you definitely can solve it elsewhere in the world." Tedjarati said Honeywell's core business aligns with China's market demands. SOUNDBITE 4 (English): SHANE TEDJARATI, President of Honeywell Global High Growth Regions "I think that areas where we're really excited about is e-commerce, safety, security, health care, energy efficiency, environment, climate change all together, and everything that relates to it. In fact, when I look at the (14th) Five-Year Plan of China, it's almost as if we had written it for each other. A lot of what Honeywell does is very much in line in the areas of the Five-Year Plan developments of China." Thanks to China's effective measures to bring the pandemic under control, Honeywell began to see its Chinese business become more normalized in the second half of last year, he said. SOUNDBITE 5 (English): SHANE TEDJARATI, President of Honeywell Global High Growth Regions "So the first half of the year (2020), I would say overall was very difficult. The second half of the year, we began to see the market become more normalized through the strong measures that the Chinese government took to ensure that the lockdowns are effective and the social distancing and the pandemic is under control." Meanwhile, the senior executive said he expects China will lead the way for the company's overall recovery in the year 2021. SOUNDBITE 6 (English): SHANE TEDJARATI, President of Honeywell Global High Growth Regions "We will see we're expecting fairly good robust growth coming out of China. And the reason for that is that China's economy is actually predicting, already grew in 2020 on low single digit, but it's predicting to be able to grow well. Overall I am expecting very robust growth. China is the second largest market for Honeywell after the United States in terms of revenue size and it is the largest growth market for for Honeywell, I expect that to be the case in 2021 and China will lead the way for recovery overall." Honeywell currently operates more than 50 joint ventures or wholly-owned subsidiaries in over 20 Chinese cities with around 10,000 employees. In 2020, the company established a wholly-owned subsidiary in the Chinese city of Wuhan as its headquarters for mass-mid segment business in China, one of its latest moves in response to China's growth and development. Dutch Artist Launches UV Light Installation to 'Clean' Public Spaces of Coronavirus

A Dutch artist has launched an installation which he says aims to make public spaces safer by using UV light to kill the virus causing COVID-19. This video shows artist Daan Roosegaarde's installation, dubbed Urban Sun, on display in Rotterdam. The studio said the project was based on "multiple peer-reviewed journal articles authored by scientists from Columbia University and Hiroshima University" which found coronavirus airborne droplets were killed when exposed to a particular wavelength of ultraviolet-C (UV-C) light. "Research shows that though traditional 254nm UV light is harmful, the new far-UV-C light with a wavelength of 222 nanometers can actually sanitize viruses safely," the studio said. Roosegaarde hopes to install the lights at festivals in the summer as COVID-19 restrictions ease but said it was not a replacement for a vaccine or government rules, Reuters reported. The actors involved in the project, who are seen in this footage, were tested for the coronavirus before filming and were only exposed to the light for a few minutes at a time, the agency reported. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said UV-C radiation may be effective in inactivating SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, but there is "limited published data about the wavelength, dose, and duration of UV-C radiation required" to do so. The administration also warned that there have been "reports of skin and eye burns resulting from improper installation of UV-C lamps." WHO expert says "corona passport" not recommended but "maybe unavoidable"

As COVID-19 transmission rates once again begin to rise across the European region, World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge on Thursday urged the region to return to basics when dealing with the pandemic. SOUNDBITE 1 (English): HAN KLUGE, WHO Regional Director for Europe "Last week, new cases of COVID-19 in Europe rose 9 percent to just above one million. This brought a promising six-week decline in new cases to an end." "We are seeing a resurgence in central and Eastern Europe. New cases are also on the rise in several western European countries where rates were already high," Kluge added. However, the WHO official declined to offer the support to the creation of "corona passports" many countries in the EU have been mulling over. SOUNDBITE 2 (English): HAN KLUGE, WHO Regional Director for Europe "It's indeed a very topical issue. So WHO does not recommend passports, but I also believe that as we see already, somehow, it may be unavoidable. And that's why we are assessing the feasibility, and the desirability of such a requirement, taking into account what they call some caveats. First of all, from a scientific point of view, how long there's a vaccine gives immunity. There's not so clear yet. And it may seem a bit contradictory, but if you get a vaccine, it protects you. The person who gets a vaccine, but not stops necessarily transmission from that vaccinated person to someone else. So it's not a watertight thing. What is needed is number one: coherence, and number two: sufficient coverage. Otherwise, this will not work. WHO follows the international health regulations when it comes to travel and trade. In that sense, we see these questions on going is not recommended by WHO the passport itself, the certificate of course yes. And a number of very important considerations, which need to be taken into account." Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Copenhagen. (XHTV)

Barcelona chocolate shop develops business despite pandemic

A quarter of local shops are in danger of closing due to the pandemic, the Spanish Confederation of Commerce warned at the end of last year. Yet some entrepreneurs in Spain have not let the health crisis hold them back. Frambons, which opened a shop and workshop in the center of Barcelona in last September, has already distributed its chocolate products to some 40 outlets around the country. SOUNDBITE 1 (Spanish): PANCHO ROTTA, Cofounder of Frambons "While it was very difficult with a lot of complications due to the pandemic, fortunately everything has worked out. We've grown a lot and we now sell the product in a lot of shops around Spain." Rotta and his business partner, Agustin Barich, are from Argentina. They had wanted to start a business for several years, and despite the pandemic, they went ahead and opened shop in Barcelona to make and sell the chocolate and fresh fruit delicacies that are popular in their homeland. SOUNDBITE 2 (Spanish): PANCHO ROTTA, Cofounder of Frambons "Right now we have a lot of wholesalers and shops that distribute the product, and our shop is doing good business, but this being a tourist destination. I think that later we'll sell much more." A recent study of 11 markets around the world by the multinational e-commerce platform Shopify found that 74 percent of Spanish consumers say that they have supported their local shops during the pandemic. SOUNDBITE 3 (Spanish): PANCHO ROTTA, Cofounder of Frambons "We opened our doors and began doing business and we succeeded. It was a lot of effort but we learnt that by working hard and making an effort you can achieve anything." Frambons says it is on course to reach a turnover of 100,000 euros in its first year, and is now exploring new recipes for its frozen chocolate delicacies, as well as looking into the possibility of exporting its products to countries such as Italy and UK. Italy reports nearly 23,000 new COVID-19 cases as some see "third wave"

Italy on Thursday reported 22,865 new coronavirus cases, up from 20,884 cases recorded on Wednesday and bringing total active infections to 446,439. The Ministry of Health reported that another 339 COVID-19 patients have died, down from 347 deaths on Wednesday and pushing to 98,974 the death toll since the pandemic officially started in the country in late February 2020. Meanwhile, another 13,488 COVID-19 patients have recovered, down from 14,068 recoveries on Wednesday and pushing overall recoveries to 2,453,706. Of the total current infections, the vast majority, or 423,807 people, are isolated at home with mild or no symptoms, while 20,157 are hospitalized with symptoms. Another 2,475 are treated in intensive care units, up by 232 compared to Wednesday. Italy is in the midst of a "vertiginous acceleration due to the variants" while "the mass vaccination campaign is failing to take off" due to "organizational difficulties" in many of Italy's 20 regions, the foundation claimed. Over 4.9 million people in Italy have been given at least the first dose of a coronavirus vaccine, and more than 1.5 million of them have received both shots, the Ministry of Health reported on Thursday. The recipients included health care staff, nursing home residents and staff, people aged over 80, the military, and school staff. Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Rome. (XHTV)

U.N. condemns up to 23 killings in Iran's border area with Pakistan

Date:MARCH 5, 2021, FILE At least a dozen people and possibly up to 23 have been killed in Iran's Sistan-Baluchistan province where Revolutionary Guards and security forces have used lethal force against fuel couriers from ethnic minorities and protesters, the United Nations said on Friday (March 5). Iran is investigating an incident in which at least two Iranians were shot dead this week at the border with Pakistan, and Islamabad has handed over the body of one of the victims, the Iranian foreign ministry said a week ago. The shooting of people carrying fuel across the border led to protests that spread from the city of Saravan to other areas in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, including the capital, Zahedan. "The series of violent events and unrest began on 22 February, when Revolutionary Guards are alleged to have shot and killed at least 10 fuel couriers, known as sookhtbar, in Sistan and Baluchistan Province at the border with Pakistan, after a two-day stand-off triggered by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps blocking the road to the city of Saravan," U.N. human rights spokesman Rupert Colville told a news briefing in Geneva. U.N. condemns up to 23 killings in Iran's border area with Pakistan

The killings had triggered demonstrations in several cities across the province, during which the revolutionary guard and security forces fired lethal ammunition at protesters and bystanders, he said. Colville said that it has been difficult to verify the death toll due to disruptions of local mobile data networks, but some unconfirmed reports have estimated that as many as 23 people may have been killed. "We are all afraid," Milan residents fearful as cases surge, restrictions tighten

Date:MARCH 5, 2021 Milan residents were fearful on Friday (March 5) as Lombardy tightened its coronavirus restrictions as the number of cases surged in the region that has been the worst-affected in all of Italy since the pandemic began. The northern Italian region was already in an 'orange zone', meaning bars and restaurants can only offer takeaway services and residents can not leave their towns or cities unless for an emergency. But the region's governor announced that from Friday, all schools would shut and go online, no-one can have visitors to their private homes and exercise in public areas is banned as part of the so-called "enhanced orange zone" until March 14. "It is no longer possible to go out to go or to visit friends or relatives but the most important thing is that all schools, from elementary school to university are closed", student Silvia Trevisani told Reuters. The tightening comes as a higher prevalence of the "British" variant is ravaging through the country. "I don't leave the house anymore I just go to the hospital and that's it", Anna said. "Let's hope that this pandemic ends as soon as possible, we have had enough." Some residents were frustrated by the slow vaccine campaign and blamed it for the deteriorating situation. "In the rest of the world too, countries are having great difficulties with vaccines, in others the campaign is going well. We talk and talk but the vaccines don't arrive," image consultant Yves Hajjar said. "We talk and talk but the vaccines don't arrive." Italy has registered 98,974 deaths linked to COVID-19 since its outbreak emerged in February last year, the second-highest toll in Europe after Britain and the seventh-highest in the world. The country has reported a touch under 3 million cases to date. (Production: Alex Fraser, Gabriele Pileri, Fabiano Franchitti) (Caption:5175WD-HEALTH-CORONAVIRUS_ITALY_MILAN_O_)

North of France gets ready for weekend lockdown

Date:MARCH 5, 2021 French citizens in the north of France are getting ready to observe a weekend lockdown after authorities announced the measure on Thursday (March 4). France extended COVID-19 weekend lockdowns to the region around the Channel coast town of Calais, following similar lockdowns around Nice and Dunkirk. The lockdown will be in place in the Pas-de-Calais department, which counts 1.4 million residents in northern France, from this weekend. The streets of Arras are expected to be empty as of Friday night (March 5) until Monday (March 8) early morning. France plans to massively expand COVID-19 vaccinations in high-risk zones. The country aims to vaccinate at least 10 million people by mid-April, 20 million by mid-May and 30 million by the summer, Prime Minister Jean Castex said on Thursday. France registered 25,279 new coronavirus infections on Thursday, bringing its total of cases to 3.84 million, and 293 more deaths, for a total death toll of 87,835. Cases have been rising at a steady weekly rate of just above 4% since early January, although this is far below rises of more than 20% seen before and during a nationwide lockdown in November. East Africa's biggest economy Kenya starts vaccinations

Date:MARCH 5, 2021 Kenya began vaccinating people on Friday (March 5) against COVID-19 with AstraZeneca shots hoped to help revive the battered tourism-dependent economy of East Africa's richest nation. Nairobi received over a million AstraZeneca doses on Wednesday (March 3), the first of 3.56 million shots via the global, vaccine-sharing COVAX facility. Top of the list are 400,000 health staff and other essential workers. Kenya plans to vaccinate 1.25 million people by June and another 9.6 million in the next phase, with more vaccines expected within weeks. Vaccinations should bolster an economy that shrank 1.1% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2020 compared with 5.8% in the same period the previous year. Tourism has been badly hit, losing 110 billion shillings ($1 billion) of revenues between January and October of 2020. Kenya was the latest nation among various around Africa to receive vaccines through the World Health Organization's co-led COVAX facility which aims to secure about 1.3 billion doses for 92 lower- and middle-income nations. WHO said on Thursday that most African countries will kick-start vaccinations by the end of March in a continent with bigger financial and logistical challenges than others. After he knocks his mum's freshly done puzzle off the table, this son was surprised when it landed on the floor still intact. California-based student Oliver Atwell, 14, said his mum has been doing puzzles since the pandemic started and has been tempted to push one off the counter. Finally deciding to give it a go, he knew the pieces were fitted together very tightly and hoped it wouldn't break. Oliver said: "I was really surprised and thankful! We all laughed and that is when I decided to put it on TikTok. It was all done in fun and I would never purposely destroy someone's hard work." ( Original Title: Baby Cries After Biting Dorito )
