Italy sees drop in active COVID-19 cases as second wave appears to slow down

Active coronavirus infections in Italy decreased by 7,300 on a daily basis on Monday, as the country seemed finally to consolidate some benefits from the latest restrictions imposed in early November to slow down the second wave of the pandemic. A further 16,377 coronavirus cases were registered over the last 24 hours, bringing the overall cases to 1,601,554, according to the Health Ministry. However, active coronavirus infections were 788,471 on Monday, down from 795,771 on Sunday, the latest statistics showed. The large majority of all those actively infected (751,540) are isolated at home with mild symptoms. Another 33,187 are currently hospitalized (up from 32,879 on Sunday), and 3,744 are in intensive care (down from 3,753 on Sunday). The daily drop in active COVID-19 infections came after a slowdown in the contagion rate across the country had already been registered over the last two weeks, according to the monitoring by Italy's National Health Institute (ISS). Data also showed 23,004 new recoveries and 672 new fatalities were recorded on Monday. The number of people recovered since the pandemic officially broke out in late February rose to 757,507, while the country's death toll grew to 55,576. Therefore, on Friday, Health Minister Roberto Speranza relaxed restrictions in five of Italy's 20 regions, and specifically downgraded three (Lombardy, Piedmont, and Calabria) from red zone to orange zone and two others (Sicily and Liguria) from orange to yellow zone. In early November, the central government introduced a three-tiered system that split the country into three zones (red for the highest risk, orange for medium risk, and yellow for low risk) according to the level of virus transmission and the situation of the public health system in each region. Also on Monday, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte's cabinet said it passed a decree providing new stimulus and relief measures to businesses and worker categories affected by the latest series of restrictions. Overall, the provision was worth some 8 billion euros (9.6 billion U.S. dollars), according to the government. It included various tax delays and tax exemptions for firms, and a single tranche of economic aid -- up to 1,000 euros for workers such as those employed in the show business and tourism sectors -- among other measures. Meanwhile, Italians wait to see under which rules and level of restrictions they would be spending December -- particularly Christmas and New Year's Eve. Such rules will be delivered through a specific cabinet decree due by Thursday at the latest. Decisions to be taken included whether inter-regional movements, family reunions, and holiday travels will be allowed or not during Christmas and New Year's Eve. According to the latest announcements by Conte, the central government would be much keen to impose a ban on ski trips until early January to avoid a risky mass movement of people. However, this would weigh heavily on the tourism industry, already hit hard by the pandemic throughout the year. An attempt at compromise in this regard came from Italy's five northern regions and two autonomous provinces sharing the Alpine mountains, which on Monday suggested letting sky resorts to reopen, but only for residents and for people who checked in local hotels, Ansa news agency reported. Russian astronauts conduct spacewalk to prepare for new ISS module

Two Russian astronauts have conducted a spacewalk to prepare the Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS) for the arrival of a new scientific module. The 47th Russian spacewalk lasted six hours and 48 minutes on Wednesday, the country's state space corporation Roscosmos said in a statement. It was the first time Roscosmos astronauts Sergei Ryzhikov and Sergei Kud-Sverchkov used the Poisk (Search) module as an exit into space rather than the Pirs (Pier) module, which will be undocked in the near future. The astronauts carried out leak inspections, installed necessary equipment and prepared for the multifunctional Nauka (Science) research module, which is planned to replace the Pirs module next year. The Poisk module launched 11 years ago is used for docking Russia's Soyuz manned spaceships, which were the only tool for commuting between the ISS and the Earth before the Crew Dragon spacecraft of U.S. firm SpaceX. 米スペースX打ち上げに成功 野口さんら4人を載せISSへ

SpaceX launches four astronauts to ISS SpaceX launched four astronauts to the International Space Station on Sunday on the first full-fledged taxi flight for NASA by a private company. The Falcon rocket thundered into the night from Kennedy Space Center with three Americans and one Japanese, the second crew to be launched by SpaceX. The Dragon capsule on top, named Resilience by its crew in light of this year's many challenges, most notably COVID-19, was due to reach the space station late Monday and remain there until spring. Sidelined by the virus himself, SpaceX founder and chief executive Elon Musk was forced to monitor the action from afar. He tweeted that he "most likely" had a moderate case of COVID-19. NASA policy at Kennedy Space Center requires anyone testing positive for coronavirus to quarantine and remain isolated. Sunday's launch follows by just a few months SpaceX's two-pilot test flight. It kicks off what NASA hopes will be a long series of crew rotations between the US and the space station, after years of delay. More people means more science research at the orbiting lab, according to officials.

Canadian VR film studio releases new project filmed on Int'l Space Station

Canadian virtual reality (VR) film studio has released a groundbreaking project filmed on International Space Station (ISS). Felix Lajeunesse, co-founder of Felix & Paul Studios, said that from the inception of their studio in 2008, their dream has always been to create an immersive experience filmed in space. SOUNDBITE 1 (English): FELIX LAJEUNESSE, Co-founder of Felix & Paul Studios "It takes a very significant amount of time to design the technology and to test it and to certify it and to verify every single component of the hardware that you're sending to space. And in parallel, we're doing all of those verifications for the software as well. And so it's a very thorough preparation process before you go to production day. So the risks that anything happen are really really really diminished, you know, given that it's almost a full year of testing and preparation before." SOUNDBITE 2 (English): FELIX LAJEUNESSE, Co-founder of Felix & Paul Studios "Honestly, it was one of the most memorable days of my life really, because prior to seeing the first rushes come, we had been through years of preparation and development to make this even possible. So the first time that we actually filmed a scene and saw our camera up there in space, and saw that the astronaut was interacting with the camera and it was happening, that was a super emotional moment." In 2018, Montreal's VR leader Felix & Paul Studios succeeded in having NASA launch two of their VR cameras to the International Space Station. The camera can record massive amounts of data to create a virtual environment that the user sees. The filmmakers in Montreal send up their ideas for shoots in space, and the astronauts make them happen. The astronaut that first opened the camera was David Saint-Jaqcues, who spent nearly seven months aboard the ISS as the mission engineer. SOUNDBITE 3 (English): DAVID SAINT-JAQCUES, Astronaut "This was all done on the fly. I had met the production team in Houston years before, when they were starting to think about it. And I showed them around the Johnson Space Center. I actually went, hosted them at my place, looking at some old space movies, when they were looking for inspiration. So I'd seen their product on the camera but no technical training per say really. No, it was all done in space." The films are available in multiple VR platforms including Microsoft's and Oculus', as well as partnerships with 5G providers, and a future touring in-person immersive cinematic dome experience. Saint-Jacques said the project was a scheduling challenge, but one that he's very glad to have been part of. SOUNDBITE 4 (English): DAVID SAINT-JAQCUES, Astronaut "As an astronaut, of course you're enthusiastic about going to space. It's your life goal. But it is such an extraordinary experience you can't hoard it. You want to share it. But it's hard on your own to share it. So we're always looking for new ways, and we always welcome people who have the gift and talent of communication that can help us share the message. And this is an incredible tool." Lajeunesse said that he thinks VR should become the default method of telling stories about space exploration, because there is no comparison between this immersive experience and traditional cinema. US election: 'Arizona is trending blue,' says politics expert

Gina Woodall,a professor at Arizona State University's School of Politics and Global Studies, explains why Arizona has become a swing state that will play a crucial role in the US presidential election: "Arizona is trending blue for two different reasons. One is our demographics have changed as we know,it's younger, more Latino, and more transient,so people are moving in and out. And then also because Republicans, some of them are moderating, and then also our unaffiliated voters seem to – according to polling – seem to be favoring Biden." Italy reports over 10,000 new COVID-19 infections

Italy reported 10,010 new coronavirus infections on Friday, pushing the total number of current active infections to 107,312 cases, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health. The data showed that 6,178 coronavirus patients were hospitalized with symptoms, and 638 were taken into the ICU, according to the data. In their latest weekly monitoring report with reference to Oct. 5-11, the Ministry of Health and the National Institute of Health (ISS) said: "We are seeing an acceleration in the evolution of the epidemic, which has entered an acute phase with a progressive increase in the number of cases." The report added that some of Italy's 20 regions are at risk of "reaching critical levels" due to an "increase in the rate of ICU bed occupancy." The Ministry of Health said Friday that 100,496 people tested positive for the virus were isolated at home because they had no or mild symptoms. A total of 247,872 people have recovered and 36,427 people have died from the virus since the pandemic first broke out in Italy in late February. Local media reported Friday that the government may impose further restrictive measures to curb the pandemic, but Health Minister Roberto Speranza said in televised comments on RAI public broadcaster that "no decision has been made at this moment." As the world is struggling to control the pandemic, countries across the globe -- among them European Union member states, China, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States -- are racing to find a vaccine. Clinical trials on drugs for COVID-19 patients in Italy grow, pandemic remains stable

Clinical trials on drugs for COVID-19 patients underway in Italy grew to 63, the country's National Health Institute (ISS) said on Thursday, as fresh data showed a stable pandemic trend at the domestic level. Overall, 92 percent of the 63 studies have a therapeutic purpose, and 8 percent a preventive purpose. Altogether, they involve 17,565 participants. Some 45 of these clinical studies have been authorized by the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA), and the last four have received the permission on Sept. 2, the ISS explained in its update report. In its paper, the ISS also recalled the human clinical trials of a possible national vaccine against the coronavirus were underway to test the safety and immunogenicity of the drug on people. Coordinated by Italy's National Institute for Infectious Disease Lazzaro Spallanzani in Rome, the vaccine human trials started in August. The results of the current phase of the research were expected by July 2021, the ISS said. Meanwhile, some 1,585 new coronavirus cases were registered on Thursday against the previous day, pushing the country's total number of assessed cases to 293,025, according to the latest statistics released by the Health Ministry. In the first half of September, the daily increase has ranged between 1,300 and 1,700 cases. Active infections grew by 881 cases daily -- a limited growth considering the domestic trend in the past weeks -- to total 41,413. A positive signal also came from the number of people who have recovered from the infection, which grew daily by 689 cases to a total of 215,954. Italy better off than other countries in COVID-19, but battle not won: health minister

Italy is better off than most of the rest of the world in terms of the COVID-19 pandemic, Health Minister Roberto Speranza told the Senate in a report on Thursday. He cited European Center for Disease Control (ECDC) data on the rate of incidence of the new coronavirus infection per 100,000 people in various European countries over the past 14 days -- Italy had 5.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, Germany 8.4, Britain 12.6, France 19, Croatia 25.3, Spain 53.6 and Romania 75.1. "These numbers explain better than many words the situation of our country, while in the rest of the world there are 1 million new cases a week, a total of 19 million active cases and over 700,000 deaths," Speranza said. "In Europe, the situation is anything but relaxed," he continued. "In the Balkans, the numbers are very worrisome, leading us to take certain drastic measures such as a ban on travelers from some of those countries." "The truth is that today Italy is objectively better off than other countries, and this has been recognized at the international level," Speranza said. The minister went on to say that "the battle has not been won... We are out of the storm but we are not yet reached a safe harbor." "For a few weeks now we have been in a phase of stability," Speranza said. "There are some clusters in various parts of the country, but we can handle them thanks to the monitoring and prevention system we have put in place." Speranza went on to describe the findings of the health ministry's seroprevalence study, which was conducted with the collaboration of the National Statistics Institute (ISTAT), the National Institute of Health (ISS), and the Red Cross. The idea behind the study, with blood tests conducted on 64,660 volunteers between May 25 and July 15, was to find out how many healthy people have developed antibodies to the new coronavirus. "The numbers are clear," Speranza said. "At least 2.5 percent of the people in our country have encountered the virus and generated antibodies to it -- this translates into 1.482 million people" out of Italy's total population. For comparison, the health minister said that the only other European country that conducted such a study was Spain, where 5 percent of the population turned out to have antibodies. Speranza went on to say that as long as everyone observes the three fundamental rules -- face masks, social distancing, and hand sanitization -- the next reopening will be trade fairs and cruise ship activities, as well as schools in September. Speranza also said that Italy has entered into an alliance to find a vaccine with Germany, France, and the Netherlands, and has signed a contract with AstraZeneca pharmaceutical company, whose vaccine candidate is being studied at Oxford University and looks very promising. The AstraZeneca vaccine is currently in phase-3 clinical testing and if all goes well, "we could have the first doses before the end of 2020," Speranza said. He added that in concert with the European Commission, Italy is working to enter into contracts will all the other leading pharmaceutical companies "so that should one of them give us some good news we will be in the condition to benefit from it right away." SpaceX Crew Dragon makes historic splashdown off Florida

The SpaceX Crew Dragon "Endeavour" spacecraft carrying two NASA astronauts parachuted to a splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida on Sunday, completing a two-month mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The spacecraft splashed down off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, at 2:48 p.m. EDT (1848 GMT) Sunday. The weather conditions appeared "great" for the parachute splashdown, tweeted NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. The SpaceX recovery vessel GO Navigator was waiting at the landing zone. The recovery teams reached the SpaceX Dragon capsule and gathered the parachutes in the water. SpaceX engineers did a purge of vapor fumes around the Dragon Endeavour to ensure the safety of the crew when they opened the hatch. The spacecraft hatch was later opened. NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley were safely brought out of the capsule. The return began at 7:35 p.m. EDT Saturday when the Crew Dragon spacecraft autonomously undocked from the ISS Harmony module. After an approximately 19-hour return journey, the spacecraft began to deorbit burn at 1:56 p.m. EDT Sunday, and deployed four main parachutes. The return of the test flight with the two astronauts from the ISS marks the first splashdown of an American crew spacecraft in 45 years, said NASA. It also wrapped up the test flight for the first commercially owned and operated crewed spacecraft under NASA's Commercial Crew Program. Astronauts Behnken and Hurley took off from U.S. soil on May 30, riding aboard Crew Dragon spacecraft in a historic test flight to the ISS. They arrived at the ISS in the Crew Dragon on May 31, where they performed tests on Crew Dragon in addition to conducting research and other tasks with the space station crew. The mission, dubbed Demo-2, is the first crewed launch to orbit from U.S. soil since NASA's shuttle program ended in 2011, and also the first-ever manned space launch by a private company, ushering in a new era of U.S. space exploration. This is SpaceX's final test flight for NASA's Commercial Crew Program and will provide critical data on the performance of the Falcon 9 rocket, Crew Dragon spacecraft, and ground systems, as well as in-orbit, docking and landing operations, according to NASA. SpaceX Crew Dragon undocks from space station

The SpaceX Crew Dragon "Endeavour" spacecraft carrying NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley undocked from the forward end of the International Space Station (ISS) on Saturday to complete a two-month mission. The spacecraft undocked from Harmony module of the ISS at 7:35 p.m. EDT (2335 GMT), said NASA. Two very small engine burns separated Crew Dragon from the ISS, and the spacecraft is slowly maneuvering away from the orbital laboratory into an orbital track that will return the astronaut crew and its cargo safely to Earth, according to NASA. Once flying free, the spacecraft will autonomously execute four departure burns to move the spaceship away from the ISS and begin the flight home. "'Dragon departing.' The @SpaceX Dragon Endeavour undocked and separated from @Space_Station. @AstroBehnken & @Astro_Doug are on their way home to planet Earth," NASA tweeted. NASA later confirmed the spacecraft has exited the "approach ellipsoid" around the space station and is on a safe trajectory. Crew Dragon will be traveling at orbital velocity prior to re-entry, moving at approximately 17,500 miles (28,000 km) per hour. The maximum temperature it will experience on re-entry is approximately 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,927 degrees Celsius). NASA and SpaceX are targeting Pensacola in the Gulf of Mexico as the primary return location for splashdown and recovery for Crew Dragon with two American astronauts, scheduled at 2:41 p.m. Eastern Time (1841 GMT) on Sunday. Recovery ships at splashdown sites will have personnel, including spacecraft engineers, trained water recovery experts, medical professionals, the ship's crew, cargo experts and others to assist in the recovery, said NASA. The two astronauts arrived at the ISS in the Crew Dragon on May 31 following a launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission, dubbed Demo-2, is the first crewed launch to orbit from U.S. soil since NASA's shuttle program ended in 2011, and also the first-ever manned space launch by a private company, ushering in a new era of U.S. space exploration. Novel coronavirus present in northern Italy in December: study

The novel coronavirus appears to have been circulating in Italy in December 2019, two months before the first cases were detected, a new study by the National Institute of Health (ISS, in its Italian acronym) has found. The study focused on wastewater samples collected before the pandemic officially broke out on Feb. 21 in Italy's northern Lombardy region, whose capital is Milan, the ISS said in a statement Thursday. "Traces of the SARS-CoV-2 virus were present in the wastewater in (the northern cities of) Milan and Turin in December 2019," said the statement. "The study analyzed 40 samples collected between October 2019 and February 2020," commented Giuseppina La Rosa from the Water Quality and Health Division of the ISS Environment and Health Department. La Rosa, who led the study, said that researchers compared these 40 samples to 24 control samples collected between September 2018 and June 2019. "The results, which were confirmed by two different labs using two different methodologies, showed the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in samples collected in Milan and Turin on Dec. 12, 2019, and in (the northern city of) Bologna on Jan. 1, 2020," said La Rosa. International Space Station flies in front of moon in rare footage, just hours after SpaceX Dragon crew capsule docks

A videographer in Switzerland has captured footage of the International Space Station crossing in front of the moon. The rare footage was filmed just hours after two Nasa astronauts docked the SpaceX Dragon crew capsule to the ISS. The ISS is often visible during the night but flying in front of the moon happens much less often. Filmer Olivier Staiger had checked websites transit-finder.com and heavens-above.com in advance and travelled 20 miles from his home to capture the moment, where he knew there would be a "narrow path of visibility." He captured the ISS passing in front of the moon at 22:28 local time from the city of Sierre. "I could track it for three minutes before coming into shot," Staiger told Newsflare by phone on Sunday evening. "The ISS is brighter than any star, because it's so big and illuminated by the sun. There is no contrail behind it and it is not blinking." Staiger adds: "The first scene is filmed in wide angle (52.5 mm), overexposed to show the surrounding stars. Then a short clip, repeated five times, shows a closeup view of the moon as the ISS flew across [it], filmed with another camera/lens combination." SpaceX launches NASA astronauts into orbit on historic mission

NASA and SpaceX launched Crew Dragon spacecraft from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Saturday, carrying two American astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). It is the first time since 2011 that American astronauts were launched on an American rocket from American soil to the ISS. The Crew Dragon spacecraft lifted off on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 3:22 p.m. Eastern Time, from historic Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center. Veteran NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley are co-commanders on the mission. NASA confirmed main engine cutoff and separation of the rocket's first and second stages minutes after the lift-off. Falcon 9's reusable first stage booster has successfully landed on the "Of Course I Still Love You" drone ship off the Florida coast. The Crew Dragon reached Earth orbit about 12 minutes after takeoff, and is making its way to the ISS, according to NASA. The spacecraft is scheduled to dock to the space station on Sunday at 10:27 a.m. Eastern Time. The spacecraft is designed to do this autonomously, but the two astronauts and the station will be monitoring approach and docking, and can take control of the spacecraft if necessary. After successfully docking, Behnken and Hurley will be welcomed aboard station and will become members of the Expedition 63 crew. They will perform tests on Crew Dragon in addition to conducting research and other tasks with the space station crew. Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Washington D.C.. (XHTV)

Bayer faces second investor reckoning over glyphosate litigation

Date:APRIL 28, 2020 Bayer on Tuesday (April 28) faces its second annual investor reckoning over its handling of a wave of U.S. lawsuits claiming its glyphosate-based weedkillers cause cancer. Criticism from investors at this year's annual shareholders' meeting - held in a virtual format with gatherings banned due to the coronavirus - will likely be less scathing than it was in 2019. Bayer shares have plunged by about a third since August 2018, when the company lost the first U.S. lawsuit claiming Roundup - acquired via the $63 billion takeover of Monsanto - causes cancer. At last year's meeting, Bayer's top management was handed an unprecedented show of shareholder disapproval with a 55.5 percent majority of shareholders voting against ratifying the executive board's business conduct. Such a vote, which prominently wraps up every German AGM, has no bearing on management's liability or tenure but it is treated as a key gauge of investor sentiment. Bayer reacted by stepping up efforts to settle the claims and appointing a veteran litigation lawyer to advise the supervisory board. In the run-up to the event, leading shareholder advisory firm ISS recommended a vote in favour of management and the supervisory board, seeing no evidence that fiduciary duties were breached in 2019. Over 3,900 tested positive, 197 die of coronavirus in Italy

A total of 3,916 people were tested positive for the coronavirus in Italy since the epidemic first broke out here 15 days ago, the Civil Protection Department said Friday. The figure did not include recoveries or fatalities, whose numbers were provided separately by Civil Protection Department chief Angelo Borrelli. In addition, 197 people have died and 523 have recovered, Borrelli told reporters at a televised press conference. This was up from 3,296 cases, 414 recoveries and 148 deaths announced in an official tally on Thursday evening. "The recoveries make up 11.28 percent and the deceased make up 4.25 percent (of the total)," said Borrelli, who also serves as Extraordinary Commissioner for the Coronavirus Emergency. "The 49 people who died today ranged from 62 to 95 years of age, and all had other illnesses," Borrelli continued. He added that of the total positive cases, 2,394 are hospitalized with symptoms, 1,060 are in isolation at home, and 462 are hospitalized in intensive care. Borrelli also said he was "comforted" by praise Friday from the leader of the World Health Organization (WHO), which is the health agency of the United Nations (UN). "In difficult times, leadership & commitment are key. The Italian government has adopted extraordinary measures to contain COVID-19 & reduce its social & economic impact. I thank President (Sergio) Mattarella for his appeal to the nation," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on Twitter on Friday, referring to a speech to the nation that Mattarella delivered on Thursday. "Italy is responding strongly. WHO stands with you," Tedros tweeted. Also at Friday's press conference was National Institute of Health (ISS) President Silvio Brusaferro, who said that "80 percent of the deceased suffered from two or more chronic illnesses, such as heart conditions and diabetes." "The average age of the deceased is 81 years, and 28 percent of them are women," Brusaferro continued. He added that some 250 doctors and other medical staff have either tested positive or are under observation because they have been in close contact with infected patients. The virus was first reported among Italians in the northern Lombardy region on Feb. 21, with no apparent links to China or any other parts of the world with ongoing coronavirus outbreaks. It has since spread to all of Italy's 20 regions. Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Rome. (XHTV)

Italian authorities on Thursday confirmed 3,296 people tested positive to the new coronavirus, an increase of 590 cases compared to the previous day. The figure did not include recoveries or fatalities, whose numbers were provided separately by Civil Protection Department chief Angelo Borrelli, who also serves as extraordinary commissioner for the coronavirus emergency. "We have registered 138 new cases of people who have recovered and have been dismissed (by hospital), which brings the total number of recoveries so far to 414," Borrelli told a televised press conference at 6 p.m. local time. "Forty-one more people died, which means the total number of fatalities has reached 148." The official specified the victims ranged between 66 years and 94 years, and that "all of them were in fragile health conditions, and for a large majority, had previous diseases." As in the previous days, the Health Ministry specified in the daily statement that the total of 148 fatalities "can be confirmed only upon certification of the effective cause of death by the National Health Institute (ISS)." Adding death toll and recoveries, the country's total figure of assessed cases was 3,858, the ministry added. Lombardy remained the region hit worst by the epidemic, with a daily increase of 280 infections that brought the total of 1,777 positive cases. It was followed by Emilia Romagna region (142 new infections, and a total of 658 people who tested positive), and Veneto (35 new infections and 380 infections). With regard to the 3,296 people positive to the new coronavirus, some 1,155 were currently under house confinement with no symptoms or light symptoms. Another 1,790 were in hospital with symptoms and 351 in intensive care. "Those in intensive care units represent about 10 percent of the population overall affected by the coronavirus (including death toll and recoveries)," Borrelli told reporters. He added recoveries made 10.73 percent, while fatalities made 3.84 percent of the total population affected so far. In a separate statement on Thursday, Italy's Superior Institute of Health (ISS) explained that "the average age of the deceased positive to COVID-19 is 81 years; they are mostly male, and in more than two-thirds of cases, they had three or more pre-existing diseases." "This resulted from an analysis made by ISS on data concerning 105 Italian patients who died up to March 4, which highlights there are 20 years of difference between the average age of the deceased and that of virus-positive patients," the ISS stated. Two ISS astronauts complete final spacewalk to repair cosmic particle detector

Two astronauts on Saturday finalized the repair of a cosmic particle detector in searching for dark matter and antimatter after a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS). European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano and U.S. space agency NASA astronaut Andrew Morgan wrapped up their six-hour-16-minute spacewalk at 1:20 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time, completing repairs on a cooling system for the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS). The 7.5-ton device, launched to the space in 2001, was developed by a 600-member multinational team. It features a thermal control system developed by Chinese scientists. The duo had completed three complex spacewalks to repair the cosmic ray detector. This time, they conducted leak checks for the cooling system on the AMS and opened a valve to being pressurizing the system, according to NASA. NASA's ground teams will work over the next several days to fill the new AMS thermal control system with carbon dioxide, allow the system to stabilize, and power on the pumps. The astronauts also completed an additional task to remove degraded lens filters on two high-definition video cameras. Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Washington D.C. (XHTV)

Asics chases Nike with motion sensor shoe

Date:JANUARY 9, 2020, FILE As the sports shoe industry reacts to Nike's hyper-advanced Vaporfly shoe, which has seen marathon records tumble and a resultant partial ban, Japan's Asics showcased its latest model which features a motion sensor in the sole. In its first appearance at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, Asics debuted a prototype that collects data on the run and transmits the information to a training app. "With the motion sensor that's embedded in this shoe, we're able to provide runners with performances evaluated on four criteria of running: how much your body moves up and down, the kick strength or how much force is applied when you're toeing off, the efficiency of your running, and how stable your heel strike is," said Gentaro Makinoda, technology marketing manager for Asics based in Irvine, California. For CES, the smart shoe prototype was embedded in the company's new EvoRide model, though Makinoda said they're still discussing which Asics shoe model would be used when they launch a commercial version later this year. For the sensor, researchers from Asics' Institute of Sports Science (ISS) partnered with Japanese start-up no new folk studio Inc (nnf), which had already built the technology. Called the Orphe Track, the sensor tracks a range of data and sends the data in real-time to an app for runners to learn about their form and make changes based on the data. The data includes the cadence of the run (how many steps one takes), the stride length, and angle of the heel strike, among others. Each category is rated on a scale of 0 to 5. The app will then suggest ways to improve each category. Despite the app providing training tips to improve runs, Makinoda said coaches don't have to fear losing their jobs anytime soon. "As of now, at least this is not going to completely replace the human coaching side of things, but definitely it will help that human coach provide better advice to the athletes," he said. On Friday (January 31) some variants of Nike's Vaporfly running shoes were outlawed for elite competition and strict limits on the technology developed for any future shoes introduced after World Athletics announced significant changes to its rules. The sport's governing body (WA) said that with immediate effect and for elite competition only, road shoes must have soles no thicker than 40mm (1.6 inches) and not contain more than one rigid, embedded plate. The Vaporfly variants used by Eliud Kipchoge to run the first sub-two hour marathon and by fellow Kenyan Brigid Kosgei to smash the women's marathon world record both contained triple carbon plates inside thick, ultra-compressed foam, said by Nike to help improve running economy by up to four percent. The new rules also state that, from April 30, any shoe used in elite competition must have been generally available to the public for four months - putting paid to the use by Nike and others of prototypes by their athletes in major races. Asics already use carbon in their products in research, but at the moment it is not a material that is used in their shoes themselves. "We use carbon in lots of our products in different ways. It may be something we consider. But currently at the moment we don't have anything in development," Fiona Berwick, Global Head of Communications for Asics told Reuters. Acics' shares saw gains in January after the news Nike would need to navigate a potential ban for giving runners an unfair advantage. Asics, based in Kobe, Japan hopes the upcoming 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo will provide a strong marketing opportunity. (Production: Nathan Frandino) (Caption:4067IV-ATHLETICS-SHOE_ASICS)

Palestinians pray at Hebron's sacred site in protest against Israeli restrictions

Date:DECEMBER 13, 2019 Palestinians in the West Bank city of Hebron on Friday (December 13) protested against Israel for what they called its increased restrictions on Muslim access to a shrine holy to Muslims and Jews. Hebron is the largest Palestinian city in the occupied West Bank, territory Israel captured in the 1967 Midddle East war, with a population of some 200,000. About 1,000 Israeli settlers live in the heart of the city and for years it has been a place of religious friction between Muslims and Jews. At the heart of the tension is an ancient holy site known to Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque and to Jews as the Tomb of the Patriarchs. Jews believe that the Tomb of the Patriarchs is where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their wives, are buried. Muslims, who, like Christians, also revere Abraham, built the Ibrahimi mosque, also known as the Sanctuary of Abraham, in the 14th century. Palestinians say Israeli authorities often restrict Muslim access to the shrine, which has sections for Muslim and Jewish prayer. Palestinians must pass through Israeli military checkpoints in order to reach the mosques, and often complain of restrictions on movement in the city. The Palestinians seek a state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as its capital. The latest round of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks broke down in 2014. SpaceX launches research facilities to Int'l Space Station

The U.S. space agency NASA's cargo provider SpaceX launched a Dragon spacecraft on Thursday, starting its resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS). The spacecraft, packed with about 2,600 kilograms of supplies and payloads, lifted off at 12:29 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time (1729 GMT) from Space Launch Complex 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in the U.S. state of Florida. About 10 minutes later, "Dragon separation confirmed," and then "its solar arrays have deployed," according to SpaceX's official Twitter account. The reusable Dragon spacecraft previously supported two resupply missions in September 2014 and June 2017. ISS crew members will use the station's 17.6-meter robotic arm to capture Dragon and attach it to the orbiting lab on Saturday, according to SpaceX. Dragon's payloads include a "robotic hotel" that allows gas leak detectors to be stored on the outside of the space station, thus enabling a quicker and simpler deployment of the instruments. The Dragon spacecraft also brought into space a new package to make subtle measurements of gravity. It may lead to the development of improved sensors that can be used for spacecraft navigation and to study Earth's climate. Also, a new Earth imaging system, with high resolution across all colors of the light spectrum to provide more information about the characteristics and physical properties of a target, will be brought into the space. Soil, rocks, vegetation, snow, ice and human-made objects tend to reflect a unique spectrum of light. The imaging system can help identify specific materials in an image, according to NASA. The spacecraft will spend approximately four weeks attached to the ISS before returning to Earth with more than 1,700 kilograms of cargo. Emirati who visited space said the trip was a 'dream come true'

Date:NOVEMBER 12, 2019, FILE A trip to space was so mesmerizing for Emirati former fighter jet pilot Hazzaa AlMansoori, he didn't want to leave. AlMansoori was part of nearly 4,000 others who applied for the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre UAE Astronaut programme that was launched in 2017 by the Ruler of Dubai. The applicants - which included more than 1,400 women - undertook a series of mental and physical tests that resulted in the choice of Hazzaa AlMansoori and Sultan Al-Neyadi, who later served as Hazzaa's back up participant in the expedition to the International Space Station. The two went through a rigourous training programme in Star City, the home of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Russia, where they had to adapt to the freezing temperatures of the Russian winter. The rocket was successfully launched from Baikonur, Kazakhstan on September 25, 2019, and was successfully docked in the ISS 6 hours after the rocket launch. The 35-year old says he conducted 16 scientific experiments during his eight-day trip to the ISS, the results of which are expected to be rolled out in 2020. AlMansoori hopes this will not be his last visit to space and looks forward to more expeditions in the future. He is only the third Arab man to set foot outside the planet. First UAE astronaut sent to International Space Station

The first astronaut from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was sent to the International Space Station (ISS), the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center (MBRSC) announced at a press conference on Wednesday. The UAE astronaut is Hazzaa Ali Almansoori. He, together with two others -- Russian cosmonaut Oleg Skripochka and NASA astronaut Jessica Meir -- were sent to space by Russia's Soyuz MS-15 spacecraft in Kazakhstan. They are expected to stay in the ISS for eight days. It was learned that during the 8-day stay, the UAE astronaut would interact with the ground stations, share his daily routines in the ISS, and carry out such missions as earth observation, image collection and scientific experiments. Adnan Alrais, Director of Remote Sensing Department under the MBRSC, said the launch is a milestone for the UAE and even for the whole Arabic region as it successfully sent the first UAE astronaut to the ISS. "We will continue to train more astronautic technicians according to UAE's aerospace development plan. It's also our national development strategy. We will develop aerospace industry and cutting-edge technologies and make aerospace industry a driver for the sustaining prosperity and development of the UAE," said Alrais.

Date:SEPTEMBER 5, 2019 United Arab Emirates astronaut Hazza Al Mansouri said on Thursday (September 5) he was proud to be the first Emirati to travel to space and to represent his country and the whole Arab region at the International Space Station. Al Mansouri, together with other members of 61/62 ISS expedition, Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Skripochka and NASA astronaut Jessica Meir, is expected to blast off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on September 25 for 187 days-long mission. During the last news conference ahead of the crew's departure to Baikonur, NASA's Jessica Meir praised the team she will work with on the ground and in space, saying the crew has a busy schedule ahead. The first UAE astronaut, Al Mansouri said he was excited about the launch, and promised he would try to capture every second of it, so he can share it later with his compatriots and the world. "I think what we will experience as astronauts and a cosmonaut, what you feel and what you experience during our mission is important that you share it with the next generation, to keep that motivation and this spark of love for space", Al Mansouri said during the crew's news conference in the cosmonauts' training centre in Star City, named after Russian first man in space, Yuri Gagarin. Russian cosmonaut and ISS mission commander Oleg Skripochka praised Al Mansouri's professionalism and level of knowledge, saying it was "higher than it is formally necessary" for a participant of a space flight. Ex-Trump aide Manafort to plead not guilty in New York

Date:JUNE 27, 2019 Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who was convicted of numerous federal crimes last year, is expected to plead not guilty on Thursday (June 27) to residential mortgage fraud and other New York state charges, setting the stage for a showdown over whether those charges amount to double jeopardy. Manafort, 70, walked into a courtroom wearing a prison-issed blue shirt and pants. He was also handcuffed. Manafort is facing an indictment with 16 felony charges disclosed by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance in March. The charges include mortgage fraud, conspiracy and falsifying records related to Manafort's efforts to obtain millions of dollars in loans on New York properties between 2015 and 2017. He served as chairman of U.S. President Donald Trump's presidential campaign for three months until August 2016. Todd Blanche, Manafort's lawyer, told Reuters his client would plead not guilty. Blanche said he planned to bring a motion to dismiss the case on double jeopardy grounds, given that the charges center on mortgage applications to two banks that were also at issue in Manafort's federal trial last year. Under New York law, a person can only be prosecuted twice for the same act if it meets certain exceptions such as at least one element of the crimes is distinct and the statutes address "very different kinds of harm or evil." Vance's office will likely argue an exception to New York's double jeopardy protections is warranted in Manafort's case. Manafort is serving a 7-1/2-year sentence for tax fraud, bank fraud and other charges stemming from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's federal investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election. Space crew unfazed ahead of first launch since rocket failure

Date:FEBRUARY 21, 2019 Two astronauts who survived a midair rocket failure in October said on Thursday (February 21) they had received counseling following their brush with death and felt ready to fly again next month. Russian cosmonaut Alexei Ovchinin and U.S. astronaut Nick Hague appeared relaxed in Russia's Star City as they discussed preparations for their first space flight since then. Together with NASA astronaut Christina Koch they are due to blast off for the International Space Station shortly after midnight on March 15. A sensor failure two minutes after launch on October 11 forced Ovchinin and Hague to perform an emergency landing from which they escaped physically unscathed. As the pair hurtled back to Earth in a capsule in October, Ovchinin could be heard in video inside the capsule saying "that was a quick flight." He later described the G-forces they experienced during the landing as akin to a concrete block seven times his weight being placed on his chest. (Caption:4085EV-SPACE-STATION_CREW)

Astronauts who failed to reach ISS last year ready for another attempt

Date:FEBRUARY 20, 2019 Cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and astronaut Nick Hague, who failed to reach the International Space Station after an aborted launch in October, are ready for another attempt. Along with NASA astronaut Christina Koch, who was not part of that flight, the crew conducted their final flight examination before heading to the launch site in Baikonur, Kazakhstan. Hague said he felt fortunate for being given a second opportunity to make the flight and underlined the extended training for unexpected situations. Hague has yet to step on board the International Space Station, while Ovchinin spent March to September 2016 in orbit. A report later found the failure to launch was caused by a sensor that was damaged during assembly, according to Russian investigators. German astronaut Gerst stresses importance of int'l space cooperation

Date:DECEMBER 22, 2018 Two days after his return from the International Space Station (ISS), German astronaut Alexander Gerst on Saturday (December 22) appealed for continued international cooperation in space. Speaking to reporters in Cologne, Gerst praised the "vision" of those who planned ISS decades ago, the world's "most complicated project" which spans across continents and requires maximum precision. Every element of the ISS must meet "a hundredth of a millimetre accuracy", Gerst said, because "we can't drive to the DIY store if something doesn't fit." Gerst also discussed his newly found love for broccoli during the hour-long news conference. Asked by a small boy in the audience dressed as an astronaut whether Gerst had already eaten broccoli since returning to earth, the real astronaut smiled and replied 'no.' Then he revealed that the vegetable was served aboard the ISS and that it had become one of his favourite dishes in space. Three crew remain on the station: NASA's Anne McClain, David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency and Russia's Oleg Kononenko. Three additional crew will join them in February. In October, U.S. astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin landed unharmed on the Kazakh steppe after their rocket bound for the station failed two minutes after liftoff.
