HK protesters fire arrows, petrol bombs as unrest spreads Date:NOVEMBER 17, 2019 EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A HIGHLIGHTS WRAP OF MATERIAL THAT HAS ALREADY MOVED. IT DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY FRESH MATERIAL. Hong Kong protesters shot arrows and hurled petrol bombs from a barricaded university on Sunday (November 17) at police who fired tear gas and water cannon in some of the worst violence in the Chinese-ruled city since anti-government unrest erupted five months ago. Several protesters took up positions on the rooftops of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, armed with bows and arrows, as unrest spread across the territory's central Kowloon district. Police said a media liaison officer was treated in hospital after being hit by an arrow in the leg and another officer's visor was struck by a metal ball although he was not hurt. Police fired tear gas to try to break up protests on Nathan Road, a major thoroughfare in Kowloon's Mong Kok district, which was strewn with loose bricks, and in Yau Ma Tei district, where successive volleys of gas canisters temporarily cleared the streets. Clashes intensified during the night. The campus is the last of five universities to be occupied by activists, who have used the site as a base to block the Cross Harbour tunnel, which connects Kowloon to Hong Kong island. A police truck, deployed to clear the bridge above the tunnel, retreated in reverse after being set ablaze. As Parker Tibbetts took cover from the torrential downpour in Washington DC on August 20, a woman carrying a pink umbrella tried to battle bravely against the winds. SWOCreverse - By Jack Longstaff and Shanti Priya This is the astonishing moment a seven-year-old boy survived being run over by a reversing car - thanks to his UMBRELLA. CCTV footage shows the boy carrying an umbrella was flattened by a car reversing through a parking lot. The boy, called Deep, was walking down the street when a white car mowed him down and ran him over when he crouched on the ground. It happened in the Nana Varacha area of Surat in Gujarat, India on August 19. Deep was waiting for his mother in the parking lot whilst his mother was in a nearby house, locals said. It is thought the umbrella he was holding over himself stopped him from being crushed completely by the car. The video footage shows Deep crouch down and the driver of the reversing car fail to spot the youngster. The car drove straight over Deep, who was miraculously able to pick himself up off the ground when he emerged at the front of the car. A neighbour of the boy’s family saw the incident unfold and immediately raised the alarm. She waved her hands at the driver as he ploughed over Deep to ask him to stop the car. Some nearby residents rushed out to help the youngster and the video footage shows the driver get out of the car to check on Deep. The sale of parasols for men has increased in Japan thanks to an increasing awareness of skin care and to the fast approaching hot, summer weather. According to official data, major department stores across the island country have seen their sales of men's umbrellas increased by two to five times. At Tokyo's Ginza, one of the metropolis' top shopping districts, one third of the umbrellas for sale are both for rain or the sun, with the average price being 3,000 yens (about 27.7 U.S. dollars). The air-light parasol is the most popular among all umbrellas, as its weight is less than 100g. Furthermore, one-handed umbrellas are also attracting many male customers, according to Kouki Moriguchi, a salesman at Ginza. "Those who mainly buy the umbrellas are commuters and graduates who have a strong awareness of skin care; some high school boys also come to buy sun umbrellas," Moriguchi said. In Saitama, a prefecture neighboring Tokyo, parasols for men are in especially high demand since a heat wave during the previous year sent more than 6,000 locals to the hospital due to sunstroke. This year, the local government has taken several measures to help residents avoid heat stroke. A task force composed of men are patrolling along main streets to show how to properly use sun umbrellas and spread knowledge regarding sunblock. Moreover, relevant departments worked with the country's largest fiber company to research and develop an advanced rain-or-shine umbrella, which can filter up to 99 percent of harmful UV rays. The sale of the newly-launched umbrellas has shot up although its price is as high as 4,500 yens (some 41.56 dollars). "Last summer was too hot, so this year it's necessary to have a parasol if we walk outside for a long time," said a customer.

A vigil was held on the evening of April 24 outside of Hong Kong’s Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre, the facility where leaders behind the pro-democracy Umbrella Movement protests in 2014 were taken after their sentencing that day.The nine people sentenced included Benny Tai Yiu-ting, Chan Kin-man, Shiu Ka-chun, Raphael Wong Ho-ming, Chu Yiu-ming, Tanya Chan, Lee Wing-tat, Tommy Cheung Sau-yin, and Eason Chung Yiu-wa, the South China Morning Post reported.Collectively referred to at times as the “Occupy Central Nine” (佔中9子), the activists ranged from lawmakers to student leaders, and all played key roles in the civil disobedience protests for universal suffrage that shut down Hong Kong’s Central business district in 2014.According to the South China Morning Post and tweets from local reporters, five of the activists – Tai, Chan Kin-man, Shiu and Wong – were sent to Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre immediately. The others received suspended sentences or community service, with the judge citing their public service, youth, or in the case of lawmaker Tanya Chan, an impending brain surgery, as reasoning. This livestreamed footage from outside the detention facility shows demonstrators playing music, holding candles and giving speeches in support of the sentenced activists. Fascinating footage from a remote village in northern Thailand shows how locals produce beautiful handmade sun umbrellas. Residents in Bo Sang, Chiang Mai, have been making the umbrellas for almost two centuries. It's a tradition which began when a Buddhist monk from the village made a pilgrimage to neighbouring Burma, or Myanmar, where he discovered the art of making sun umbrellas. He passed on the skill to his fellow locals, and an industry sprung up in the small village. They became world-renowned for their intricate and beautiful umbrellas - shipping them across Thailand and the rest of the world. Each one features a hand-painted design on the silk material. Footage taken from one workshop in the village shows how the bamboo frame is produced by craftsmen and women. The woven cotton and silk shade is then hand wound, before being stretched across the bamboo frame and left to dry in the sun. They're then sprayed with a base colour before master painters put on the finishing touches with beautiful scenes from Thailand.
