    トランプ氏、大統領退任演説

'The world respects us again' -Trump bids farewell VIDEO SHOWS: U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP DELIVERING SPEECH STORY: U.S. President Donald Trump bid farewell in a video address from the White House on Tuesday (January 19), saying "I took on the tough battles, the hardest fights, the most difficult choices because that's what you elected me to do." Closing out his presidency, Trump leaves behind a polarized America, where thousands are dying daily from the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy is badly damaged and political violence has surged. Trump's refusal to concede defeat to Democratic President-elect Joe Biden and his encouragement of his supporters to descend on the Capitol mean his term is ending amid a swirl of untruths that millions of Republicans have taken to heart, creating a serious challenge for the new administration to win their trust. The disorderly transfer of power comes against the backdrop of the increased spread of a pandemic that Trump has downplayed, and mounting financial hardships from the deep recession spurred by it.(Edit No: 2199 v2 USA-TRUMP/FAREWELL REMARKS)

Funerary temple of ancient queen unveiled in Egypt's Saqqara

An Egyptian archeological mission working in the Saqqara necropolis near the Pyramids of Giza announced on Sunday the discovery of the funerary temple of ancient Egyptian Queen Neit, wife and daughter of King Teti, the first pharaoh of the Sixth Dynasty that ruled Egypt over 4,300 years ago. The discovery introduces the name Queen Neit for the first time in ancient Egyptian history, as King Teti was known before the discovery to have had only two wives, Iput I and Khuit II, according to Egyptian top archeologist Zahi Hawass. SOUNDBITE (Arabic): ZAHI HAWASS, Head of Saqqara Necropolis archaeological mission "Our archeological mission discovered a pyramid in this place in 2010, but we didn't know the name of the owner. Only yesterday we discovered the funerary temple and found inscriptions showing that it belonged to a queen named Neit, wife and daughter of King Teti." The archeological site is located near the Pyramid of Teti, while Neit's funerary temple is opposite to the remains of her pyramid that is also near the remains of another two pyramids of the Teti's other two wives. Hawass explained that these discoveries will "rewrite the history of this region," especially when it comes to the Eighteenth and the Nineteenth Dynasties of the New Kingdom, during which King Teti was worshipped and citizens at that time were buried around his pyramid. The mission also found 22 burial shafts, with one containing 54 colorful coffins, as well as many other items, all dating back to the New Kingdom some 3,000 years ago. Egypt unveils 3000-year old coffins in latest archaeological discovery

Date:JANUARY 17, 2021 Egypt has unveiled a significant new archaeological discovery at the Saqqara necropolis south of Cairo, including 54 wooden coffins, many of which can be traced back 3,000 years to the New Kingdom period. The funerary temple of Queen Neit was also discovered near the pyramid of her husband, King Teti of Egypt's 6th dynasty which dates back 4,200 years, said famed archaeologist Zahi Hawass, who headed the archaeological mission. The coffins, or sarcophagi, include the first dating back to the New Kingdom to be found at Saqqara, a UNESCO world heritage site that is home to the Step Pyramid, the tourism and antiquities ministry said in a statement. Carved in human form and painted in bright colors, many of them are still intact. Ancient games, statues, and masks were also found. "All these discoveries will rewrite the history of Saqqara and the New Kingdom," said Hawass. Officials are keen to show off newly discovered artifacts as they try to revive visitor numbers after the tourism industry received a painful blow during the coronavirus pandemic. The number of tourists visiting the country dropped to 3.5 million last year from 13.1 million in 2019. (Production: Sayed Sheasha, Nadeen Ebrahim) (Caption:7013WD-EGYPT-ANTIQUITIES__O_)

Uganda's opposition presidential candidate rejects early preliminary results

Date:JANUARY 15, 2021 Uganda's opposition frontrunner in this week's presidential election said on Friday (January 15) he rejected early preliminary results released by the electoral commission. "We have certainly won this election and we have won it by far", Bobi Wine told a news conference at his home in the capital on Friday in which he alleged fraud and violence in Thursday's (January 14) polls but did not provide evidence. His claims have not been independently verified by Reuters or observers, though the United States and the European Union, which have previously deployed observation missions for Ugandan elections, did not deploy teams this time. With 29.4% of votes from Thursday's ballot counted, Museveni had won 1,852,263 votes, or 63.9%, while Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, had 821,874 (28.4%), the electoral commission said just after 11 a.m. (0800 GMT). Chinese envoy urges parties in Mali to forge consensus on institution building, election preparation

A Chinese envoy on Wednesday called on all parties in Mali to forge consensus on institution building and election preparation. Dai Bing, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, made the remarks at a Security Council briefing on the situation in Mali. SOUNDBITE 1 (English): Dai Bing, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations "All parties in the country must put the interests of the nation and its people first, seize the opportunity of this crucial stage, forge consensus on institution building and election preparation, with a view to laying a solid foundation for the general election next year, as well as development in the long run." "The African Union and the Economic Community of West African States have played a leading role in defusing the crisis in Mali and promoting the transitional process," said Dai, adding that the United Nations and international partners must strengthen coordination with regional and sub regional organizations and work in synergy to jointly maintain peace and stability in Mali. Dai called for efforts to continue the counterterrorism work. SOUNDBITE 2 (English): Dai Bing, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations "China supports MINUSMA (United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali) in assisting the G5 Sahel join forces as mandated and supports the continued and active participation of Malian transitional government in counterterrorism efforts by G5 Sahel." SOUNDBITE 3 (English): Dai Bing, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations "Mali is facing such challenges as political instability and shortage of food. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the economic situation in the country even worse, with over 600,000 people unable to return home and over 3 million people in urgent need of food assistance. The Malian transitional government must shoulder its responsibility, increase input in security development and other areas, restore economic activities and promote sustainable development, with a view to providing basic livelihood and security guarantee for its population." Former Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita was overthrown in a coup by the military junta on Aug. 18 and was detained. He was released on Aug. 27. Mali adopted a roadmap for governance and an 18-month transition charter. The roadmap agreed includes restoration and strengthening of defense and security in Mali, promotion of good governance, a redesign of the education system, political and institutional reforms, and the adoption of a stability pact. Bayern come to terms with shock German Cup defeat

Date:JANUARY 14, 2021 EDITORS PLEASE NOTE: THE FIRST SOUNDBITE CONTAINS PROFANE LANGUAGE Bayern Munich suffered a stunning second-round exit in the German Cup to second division side Holstein Kiel on Wednesday (January 13), twice being pegged back to draw 2-2 before losing 6-5 in a shootout, their earliest exit from the competition in 21 years. On Thursday (January 14), Bayern fans were naturally disappointed by the defeat with some insistent that Hansi Flick's team must now win the Bundesliga and the Champions League this season. To do that Bayern will be rushing to fix their leaky defence ahead of Sunday's (January 17) match against Freiburg, knowing that any mistakes will cost them against one of Europe's form sides. Bayern is top of the table, two points clear of RB Leipzig but they have already conceded 24 goals in 15 games, their worst run since 1981. They have also failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 10 league games, and have fallen behind in nine of them. They squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 at Borussia Moenchengladbach last week. Flick has yet to find his ideal defensive set-up with Niklas Suele, David Alaba, and Benjamin Pavard all playing well below their best. Alphonso Davies is also still progressing after returning from injury. Bayern, who had virtually no pre-season following their five-title haul in 2020, had to put things right at training ahead of the weekend. Team GB Olympic chief 'hugely confident' Tokyo games will go ahead

Date:JANUARY 13, 2021, FILE Team GB Chef de Mission Mark England said on Wednesday (January 13) he was confident the Tokyo Olympics would go ahead this year but athletes could expect them to be very different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Games, delayed from 2020 due to the novel coronavirus, are scheduled for July 23 to August 8 but Japan has expanded a state of emergency in the Tokyo area with cases of COVID-19 rising steadily. "We are hugely confident of the Games going ahead in the summer," England told Reuters after announcing the selection of shooting hopefuls Kirsty Hegarty, Matt Coward-Holley, Aaron Heading and Seonaid McIntosh. "We certainly wouldn't be announcing athletes if that wasn't the case." England, who sits on an International Olympic Committee (IOC) working group, said there would be some "obvious pressure points" but "incredibly comprehensive" health and safety protocols would protect the athletes. A weekend survey by Japanese public broadcaster NHK showed most locals want to cancel or postpone the Games. Takeshi Niinami, CEO of beverage giant Suntory Holdings and an economic adviser to Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, told Reuters he was unsure whether the Olympics could be held as planned. England said he based his confidence on much more than just "a vibe". "The Prime Minister of Japan overnight has commented that the Games will go ahead, the IOC are very confident in their planning for the Games to go ahead," he said. "There is nothing that we are hearing today that suggests the Games won't go ahead. We are full steam ahead, planning to embark on Japan from the middle of July and that is our focus of attention." WHO team member says does not expect any limitations on investigative visit to Wuhan

Date:JANUARY 13, 2021 A global team of scientists led by the World Health Organisation to investigate the origins of the coronavirus does not expect to face any limitations in their work in the Chinese city of Wuhan, a team member told Reuters on Wednesday (January 13). Hung Nguyen, a Vietnamese biologist, made the comments to Reuters as the WHO team prepared to fly on Thursday (January 14) from Singapore to Wuhan, where the first human cases were detected in late 2019. The team will spend around a month in Wuhan, including two weeks in quarantine, according to Hung. The United States, which has accused China of having hidden the extent of its initial outbreak, has called for a "transparent" WHO-led investigation and criticised the terms, under which Chinese experts did the first phase of research. Hung said the team had been having regular virtual meetings with Chinese virus researchers over the last few months ahead of the trip. After a fortnight of serving quarantine, Hung said the team planned to spend a further two-week period interviewing people from research institutes, hospitals and the seafood market in Wuhan where the new pathogen is believed to have emerged. China has been pushing a narrative via state media that the virus existed abroad before it was discovered in Wuhan, citing the presence of coronavirus on imported frozen food packaging and scientific papers claiming it had been circulating in Europe in 2019. Dutch virologist to join WHO team to Wuhan

Date:JANUARY 12, 2021 Dutch scientist Marion Koopmans flew from Amsterdam to Singapore on Tuesday (January 12) to join colleagues on a World Health Organization (WHO) mission to China to investigate the origin of the coronavirus. A Chinese official said that the group of international experts would travel to Wuhan, where the virus was first detected, on Thursday (January 14), though he did not say whether they would have to go into quarantine on arrival. Koopmans, a leading virologist and a regular on Dutch television, departed from Amsterdam's Schiphol airport on Tuesday. "I'm on my way, for a WHO mission to China. To try and see what we can learn about what's happened at the start of this pandemic," said Koopmans. The coronavirus was first detected in the central city of Wuhan in late 2019 and has since spread around the world, infecting more than 90,500,000 people and killing nearly 2 million. Much remains unknown about its origins and China has been sensitive about suspicion of a cover-up that delayed its initial response and allowed the virus to spread. Ahead of the team's visit, China has been seeking to shape the narrative about when and where the pandemic began, with senior diplomat Wang Yi saying "more and more studies" showed it emerged in multiple regions. A health expert affiliated with the WHO said previously that expectations should be "very low" that the team would reach a conclusion from its trip to China. China says WHO team will fly from Singapore to Wuhan on Jan.14

Date:JANUARY 12, 2021 China's foreign ministry said on Tuesday (January 12) that the World Health Organization's team of international experts to investigate the origin of COVID-19 will fly from Singapore to the Chinese city of Wuhan on January 14. Lack of authorisation from Beijing had delayed the arrival of the 10-strong team on a long-awaited mission to investigate early infections, in what China's foreign ministry called a "misunderstanding". China has yet to release details on the team's itinerary. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus welcomed the news and said that studies would begin in the central city of Wuhan where the first human cases were identified. China has been accused of a cover-up that delayed its initial response, allowing the virus to spread since it first emerged in the central city of Wuhan late in 2019. Divers on Tuesday retrieved a black box of the Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-500 plane that plunged into the water off the coast of the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Saturday, local TV reported here. The black box was found on the seafloor between Lancang Island and Laki Island of Jakarta Gulf. The black box is being transported by a ship to the Jakarta sea port of Tanjung Priok. The Boeing 737-500 aircraft with 62 people on board plunged into the waters off the coast of Indonesia's capital Jakarta on Saturday. The flight SJ-182 operated by the budget airline crashed shortly after taking off from Soekarno-Hatta international airport in Jakarta, bound for Pontianak city in West Kalimantan province. A total of 3,600 personnel have been involved in the search mission, as well as 54 ships and 13 planes and helicopters. Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Jakarta. (XHTV)

Origin-tracing on coronavirus is about scientific answers: WHO

The mission of the research team to arrive in China for novel coronavirus origin-tracing is about scientific answers, a senior World Health Organization (WHO) official said on Monday. "Understanding the origins of disease is not about finding somebody to blame, it is about scientific answers," Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO's Health Emergencies Program, said at a virtual press conference from Geneva. Answering a question on whether the WHO might send teams to any other countries, Maria Van Kerkhove, technical lead on COVID-19 response at the WHO Health Emergencies Program, said that the research studies will go where the initial patients were identified and the WHO is also working with different networks. Kazakhstan vote lacked 'genuine' competition: observers

International election monitors say a weekend parliamentary poll in Kazakhstan lacked any real competition and they raise concerns over freedom of assembly after riot police detained opposition protesters. Sunday's vote in the authoritarian Central Asian country went ahead without any genuine opposition parties, even after leader Kassym-Jomart Tokayev promised gradual reforms after he came to power in 2019. Inside Israel’s social media campaign to woo the Middle East

Date:JANUARY 11, 2021, RECENT Working in close quarters, surrounded by maps of the Middle East, a small team based in Israel's foreign ministry are focusing their sights on the Arab world. Their mission: using social media to convince Arabs to embrace the Jewish state. The team is spearheading an Arabic-language campaign via platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as part of a multi-pronged diplomatic effort to win over popular acceptance in the Middle East. But overturning decades of hostility is no easy feat, despite Israel in recent months having secured landmark Washington-brokered deals with the governments of the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco. The magnitude of the task was underscored by a recent online backlash after photographs of Egyptian actor and rapper Mohamed Ramadan partying with Israeli celebrities at a Dubai bar surfaced on social media in November, along with a video showing guests partying as the Jewish song "Hava Nagila" played. Israeli officials acknowledge the challenges of the task in a region where there is widespread support for Palestinians living under Israeli occupation or as refugees across the Middle East. Yonatan Gonen, who heads the Arabic-language social media unit, said: "most of the countries in the Arab world don't have official relations with Israel, so the social media was like a big earthquake." Israel wants to gain broader Arab support for the new deals than it has with formal peace treaties it signed with Egypt and Jordan, in 1979 and 1994, respectively. Those treaties are upheld by the countries' leaders but are regarded with little enthusiasm by many Egyptians and Jordanians. An October report by Israel's Ministry of Strategic Affairs found that during August and September more than 90% of Arabic social media commentary regarding the "normalization" deals was negative. "Israel must prepare to commence a protracted campaign online to win hearts and minds in favor of creating stronger ties with Israel," according to a detailed summary of the report shared with Reuters by the ministry. A ministry official said that by January the level of negative commentary had fallen to 75%. That foreign ministry's ten-member Arabic-language team includes both Jews and Arabs. During a recent visit to Dubai, team member Lorena Khateeb posted to Twitter a photo of herself outdoors with the Israeli flag draped over her back, When asked about the visit she said: "you feel you are part of this place that you are at. It makes you feel that you're home." Commenting on the Israeli Foreign Ministry work, Palestinian analyst Ghassan Khatib, said: "not enough time has passed, and there aren't any studies that indicate a deep change in the public opinion in these Arab countries." Still, the Jewish state still faces widespread opposition to its reconciliation efforts across the region, which is home to more than 400 million Arabic speakers. Indonesia conducts aerial search after plane crash

Date:JANUARY 10, 2021 Indonesian authorities on Sunday (January 10) conducted an aerial search for the Sriwijaya Air jet that crashed into the sea soon after taking off from the capital Jakarta. The Boeing 737-500 with 62 passengers and crew was headed to Pontianak in West Kalimantan before it disappeared on Saturday (January 9) from radar screens four minutes after takeoff. Indonesian authorities said they have detected signals that could come from a flight recorder of the jet, as human body parts and suspected pieces of the plane have been retrieved. With a massive search and rescue mission underway, there were no immediate clues on what may have caused the jet's sudden descent. (Production: Angie Teo) (Caption:7009AS-INDONESIA-CRASH_AERIAL_O_)

Heartfelt Moment College Graduate Passes California Bar Exam

Footage shared to Instagram on January 8 captures the heartfelt moment a law school graduate found out he passed the California Bar Exam. Omarr Rambert, a recent UCLA School of Law graduate, decided in fifth grade he wanted to be a lawyer and described passing the exam as "the greatest accomplishment" of his life. "I was the first male in my family to go to college, let alone law school," he said. Rambert lost his stepfather, the songwriter LaShawn Daniels, in a fatal car crash in 2019, during his final year of law school. Despite the pain of losing of one of his "biggest supporters," he pushed on and finished "the mission because that's what [Daniels] wanted." "I graduated UCLA School of Law that same year, had a virtual graduation ceremony because of COVID-19, and began the process of studying for the California Bar Exam," he said. "The CA Bar Exam is considered the hardest in the nation, and I passed due to God and hard work." This video shows Rambert and his mother emotionally reacting to the news of his exam results. Inside an overwhelmed California ICU battling the coronavirus surge

Date:JANUARY 8, 2021 EDITORS NOTE: CONTAINS GRAPHIC SHOTS OF A COVID PATIENT BEING INTUBATED (A TUBE PUT DOWN THROAT TO ATTACH PATIENT TO VENTILATOR) Intensive care units are so full in California's Orange County that ambulances loaded with patients are lining up outside hospitals waiting for space and COVID patients fill the emergency room hallways. Despite strict stay-at-home measures that were fortified across most of the state last month, California leads the United States with nearly 2.6 million COVID-19 cases, over a million more than the next state, according to a Reuters tally of official data. More than 28,000 people have died. "When we get filled up with COVID patients, we can't take care of the community in general," said Dr. Jim Keany, 54, the managing partner for emergency physicians at Providence Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. "We become overwhelmed with COVID patients, every bed is full, every nurse and doctor is occupied taking care of COVID patients. And then we struggle to be able to service the community for standard emergencies." One patient waited in the ambulance more than five hours before being admitted, Keany said. Orange County officials had previously allowed hospitals to divert patients elsewhere when they were full, but now that virtually all the hospitals have reached capacity that policy has been rescinded, resulting in long wait times for treatment, Keany said. "We are pushing our carpenters and facility people to an extreme in trying to build out space where we can manage patients," Keany said. Orange County officials had previously allowed hospitals to divert patients elsewhere when they were full, but now that virtually all the hospitals have reached capacity that policy has been rescinded, resulting in long wait times for treatment, Keany said. Dr. Robert Goldberg, 44, a pulmonary and critical care physician at Providence Mission Hospital, called on the public to help reduce the threat by wearing masks, maintaining social distance, and getting the vaccine once it becomes available. "COVID is real. It's life threatening," Goldberg said. "People of all ages are dying. We need to work together. We need to get through this together." "Let's go, fight!" the four-member squad, all volunteers, shouted out to passers-by, with their protective face shields fogging up in the chilly Tokyo morning as they waved gold pom poms. Head cheerleader Kumi Asazuma said the group had been performing for more than 10 years to help energise morning commuters, but their mission had taken on new meaning during the pandemic. Cheerleaders from her group generally perform Thursdays in Tokyo and Fridays in neighbouring Kanagawa prefecture, but they will likely have to perform remotely during the upcoming state of emergency which begins on Friday (January 8), posting videos on social media, she added. About a dozen people stopped to take smartphone photos and videos while others watched as they filtered out from the station towards their offices. Though still less seriously affected by the pandemic than many countries around the world, Japan saw new daily infections top 6,000 for the first time on Wednesday (January 6), according to public broadcaster NHK, led by 1,591 positive tests in the capital, Tokyo. China plays down WHO concern about delay in COVID-19 team's trip

Date:JANUARY 6, 2021 China played down on Wednesday (January 6) World Health Organization's (WHO) concern about a delay in authorisation for a visit by a team of experts looking into the origins of the novel coronavirus, saying arrangements were being worked out. The head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on Tuesday (January 5) he was "very disappointed" that China had not authorised the entry of the team for the investigation, which he said was a WHO priority. A 10-strong team of international experts had been due to set off in early January as part of a long-awaited mission to investigate early cases of the disease. Asked about reports that the dates had been agreed upon, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a regular news briefing that there had been a "misunderstanding", and the two sides were still in discussions over the timing and other arrangements and "remain in close communication". The mission is due to be led by Peter Ben Embarek, the WHO's top expert on animal diseases that cross the species barrier, who went to China on a preliminary mission last July. 'Growing concern' over 'dire' migrants situation in Bosnia, IOM says

Date:JANUARY 5, 2021, RECENT The United Nations' migration agency on Tuesday (January 5) expressed "growing concern" as migrants in Bosnia-Herzegovina have been sleeping outside in below-zero temperatures amid delays and indecision over their relocation. Hundreds of migrants from Africa, Asia and the Middle East were left stranded in the open air in Camp Lipa last week when an attempt to relocate them to another site in Bosnia after fire wrecked their temporary camp failed, police and migrants said. "IOM and its partners are providing support as best we can, but it's clear that a sustainable long-term solution must be found," International Organization for Migrants spokesman Paul Dillon told a news briefing on Tuesday. Fire destroyed Camp Lipa, near the town of Bihac in western Bosnia, last week. The migrants were supposed to be transferred to the town of Bradina, about 320 km (200 miles) away in central Bosnia. They were initially put onto buses and waited in cold winter weather for more than a day to be taken to another place. However, there was no final agreement on where they should go. Peter Van der Auweraert, the head of IOM's Bosnia mission, said incessant rain that led to severe drops in temperatures has battered migrants who were sleeping outside, adding that the agency has been distributing winterised jackets and sleeping bags. Some have deteriorating health conditions, including respiratory and skin issues, as well as an increasing mental stress, he said. Van der Auweraert said two other centres could house the hundred of ex-residents of the burnt camp, but a lack in consensus between the national government and local authorities has put the migrants in limbo. Negotiations should continue this week, he said. "There is international funding available, there is international assistance available, what has been the difficulty is to get a political consensus as to where these migrants could be accommodated," he said. Camp Lipa, which was opened last spring as a temporary shelter for the summer months, housed about 1,200 people and was due to be shut for winter refurbishing. Israel says completes delivery of 2 Iron Dome batteries to U.S. army

The Israeli Defense Ministry said on Sunday that it had completed the delivery of two anti-rocket Iron Dome systems to the U.S. Army. The second of the two Iron Dome batteries was delivered over the weekend, according to a statement issued by the ministry. The two batteries "will be employed in the defense of U.S. troops against a variety of ballistic and aerial threats," the statement read. Defense Minister Benny Gantz said in the statement that the batteries will assist the U.S. Army in protecting its troops "from ballistic and airborne threats as well as from developing threats in the areas where U.S. troops are deployed on various missions." In August 2019, Israel and the United States signed an agreement for the procurement of two Iron Dome Defense System batteries. The first battery was delivered in September 2020 and is already undergoing a process of implementation, according to the ministry. The Iron Dome system was declared operational in 2011. Israel has used the system to intercept rockets fired toward its territory by militants in the Gaza Strip. Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Jerusalem. (XHTV)

Developers build device that projects sci-fi movie-style 3D hologram images

Developers have built a device that successfully displays 3D hologram images on a table. Voxon Photonics, a New York-based startup, released the VX1 device which is capable of forming 3D images like those seen in science fiction films. The firm has been working on the technology since 2012, which is used experimentally for 3D video conferences and gaming arcades, among other things. The company describes the VX1 display as the most advanced volumetric 3D display on the market. Voxon's display technology does not require special glasses like VR, AR or 3D in the cinema. A standard projector casts the light layer by layer onto a rapidly moving surface. The movements are so fast that the human eye perceives them as a unit. Footage shows the device recreating the object being illustrated on software into a holographic display. In another video, the device was able to display a hologram mimicking a man's hand movements on top of it. Inventor Gavin Smith and Will Tamblyn from Nesta Labs worked together with Voxon after they had the idea for the prototype centred around the ability to control the placement of a point of light. Gavin said they used to receive bad comments such as 'building largely unnecessary inventions' but they believe they are helping with the advancement of technology. He said: 'Our slogan is to take what had only been imagined and bring it to life. 'We never had this as a slogan or mission statement, but with hindsight, this was what drove us both to experiment, free from rules, and sensibilities, and people who knew better, telling us not to waste our time.' According to Voxon, the display technology offers new ways to 'visualize, communicate, learn and have fun together'. It is installed in a holo slot machine, among other things. Gavin said that they used to build devices in Will's backyard shed in Adelaide, Australia which they received critics for being 'unnecessary.' These inventions include magnetic bike shoes, inverted record players, and others. The VX1 is available now for $9800 USD which they say is 'ideally suited for universities and other organisations where analysis and presentation of complex data is common.' Chinese FM expresses readiness to enhance coordination with EU to keep ties on right track

China is prepared to enhance coordination with the EU to keep the relations on the right track, said Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in a recent interview with Xinhua News Agency and China Media Group. SOUNDBITE (Chinese): WANG YI, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister "As you mentioned, the year 2020 marked the 45th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between China and the EU. Throughout the years, our relationship with the EU has withstood the profound changes in the world. It has on the whole focused on dialogue, cooperation and mutual benefit, and demonstrated strong vitality by progressing with the times. For the two sides: The most important experience is to stay committed to peaceful coexistence, open cooperation, multilateralism, and dialogue and consultation. The most important conclusion is that our cooperation and common understandings far outweigh competition and differences. China and the EU are comprehensive strategic partners, not systemic rivals. The most important mission is to jointly tackle global challenges, promote a multi-polar world, economic globalization and greater democracy in international relations, and inject more stability and certainty into a turbulent and changing world. In 2020, China and the EU made new progress in their relations despite COVID-19. China became the EU's largest trading partner for the first time. The two sides signed the agreement on geographical indications, and decided to establish two new high-level dialogue mechanisms on environment and climate and on digital cooperation, and build partnerships for green and digital cooperation. President Xi Jinping and European leaders have jointly announced the conclusion of negotiations on a China-EU investment treaty, adding fresh, strong impetus to China-EU cooperation. It is also great news for the struggling global economy. This is a clear example of how, by working together in the spirit of mutual understanding, mutual accommodation and equal consultation, the two sides can open up broad prospects for China-EU cooperation. In this volatile and changing world, China will remain a supporter of European integration, greater strategic autonomy of the EU, and a bigger role of the EU in international affairs. The multilateralism that our two sides advocate must be dedicated to unity and cooperation rather than group politics. It needs to transcend systemic difference rather than draw lines along ideology. China is prepared to enhance coordination with the EU to keep our relations on the right track." Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Beijing. (XHTV)

The principle of for the people and by the people has been a source of strength for the Communist Party of China. SOUNDBITE (Chinese): WANG YI, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister "The principle of for the people and by the people has been a source of strength for the Communist Party of China. We have defied risks and danger to put up a firm line of defense for our fellow Chinese in every corner of the world. We have stood at the forefront of preventing imported cases, doing everything we could to lock in the hard-won gains in controlling the coronavirus at home. We have stood at the forefront of serving domestic development, giving diplomatic support to the national endeavor of finishing building a moderately prosperous society in all respects and securing victory against extreme poverty. We have stood at the forefront of advocating international cooperation against COVID-19, making our contribution to forging a global synergy in this battle. We have stood at the forefront of fighting misinformation, rebutting attempts of politicization and stigmatization. We were determined to make sure that the objective narrative and collective memory of the battle against the pandemic would not be distorted by lies. COVID-19 may have suspended flights, yet it has not hindered the solicitude of the motherland for the well-being of its sons and daughters abroad. COVID-19 has brought challenges to our consular work, yet the safety of overseas Chinese has remained our priority no matter what. Consular services have continued uninterrupted, so has our consular work in general. In the early stage of the pandemic, we mobilized all resources possible to meet the pressing needs of Wuhan and the whole country, sourcing, buying and receiving all kinds of medical supplies from around the world to address the urgent demand at home. When COVID-19 struck other parts of the world, we kept the safety and well-being of overseas Chinese citizens very much on our mind. We urged more attention from the governments of host countries to the hardships of Chinese nationals, and offered prompt support to those infected, including targeted telemedicine services. We overcame various difficulties to deliver more than 1.2 million health kits to overseas Chinese students, sent emergency medical supplies to overseas Chinese in 100-plus countries, and arranged over 350 special flights to bring home stranded Chinese nationals. Our consular protection hotline 12308 has operated 24/7 to provide dedicated services and assistance to overseas citizens, bringing the care and solicitude of the Party and the country to every one of them. Our diplomats abroad said this to their fellow countrymen and women in affected countries, "The embassy will always be here with you. We will get through this together". With COVID-19 still ravaging the world, the risk of case import continues to rise and consular protection remains a formidable task. We in the diplomatic service will firmly implement the decisions of the CPC Central Committee and make solid efforts to prevent imported cases and protect and assist overseas Chinese citizens. We will press ahead against all difficulties to live up to the trust and fulfill the mission placed upon us." Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Beijing. (XHTV)

    2021年新年、武漢のお寺で初詣の様子

Wuhan residents flock to temple to pray for luck and health in 2021 Date:JANUARY 1, 2021 Hundreds of people in Wuhan visited a popular local Buddhist temple on Friday (January 1) to pray for good luck and health in 2021, with many saying they hope the COVID-19 pandemic comes to an end soon so their lives return to normal. "I hope that Wuhan can get better and better and I hope that the epidemic will be over soon so that everyone can remove their masks and go to the places they want to go to," said 28-year-old Wuhan resident Xixi. The COVID-19 pandemic, which has so far left more than 1.8 million dead and infected more than 82.9 million people according to a Reuters tally, is believed to have originated in Wuhan in late 2019. A team of experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) is scheduled to arrive in China in early January for a long-awaited mission to look into the origins of the coronavirus. On a cool and sunny New Year's Day, Wuhan locals and tourists burned incense, prayed, paid respects and hit large bells at the city's sprawling Guiyuan temple. By late morning a queue several hundred long had formed and snaked around the perimeter of the temple's walls, with many near the back expecting to wait more than hour to get in. Traditionally many people in China visit temples on the first day of both the western calendar year and the lunar new year, not just Buddhists. There was a heavy security presence outside the entrance and inside the complex plain clothes security personnel could be seen at various points. All visitors were required to wear masks. 習近平首席、新年の祝辞

Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a New Year speech on Thursday, reviewing the achievements of 2020 in the country's fight against the unexpected COVID-19 epidemic with unity and perseverance, taking the lead in achieving positive growth among major economies worldwide and securing the decisive victory in poverty alleviation, as well as extending wishes for 2021, which marks the 100th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Below is the full text: Comrades, friends, ladies and gentlemen, Hello everyone! The year 2021 is arriving. From China's capital Beijing, I extend my New Year greetings to you all! 2020 was an extraordinary year. Facing the sudden coronavirus epidemic, we put people and their lives first to interpret the great love among humans. With solidarity and resilience, we wrote the epic of our fight against the epidemic. During the days when we addressed the hardship together, we saw the heroic spirit of marching straight to the frontlines, holding posts with tenacity, taking responsibility to get through thick and thin, sacrifices with bravery, and touching moments of helping each other. From medical workers to the people's army, from scientific researchers to community workers, from volunteers to those who built the projects, from seniors to youths born after the 1990s and 2000s, numerous people fulfilled their missions at the cost of their lives and protected humanity with sincere love. They pooled their drops of strength into tremendous power and built an iron wall to safeguard lives. Many figures marched ahead without hesitation, many relays accomplished hand in hand, many scenes showed touching moments, all these vividly illustrate the great spirit of fighting against the epidemic. Greatness is forged in the ordinary. Heroes come from the people. Everyone is remarkable! Our sympathy goes to all the unfortunate ones infected with the coronavirus! We salute all the ordinary heroes! I am proud of our great motherland and people, as well as the unyielding national spirit. Only in hard times can courage and perseverance be manifested. Only after polishing can a piece of jade be finer. We overcame the impact of the epidemic, and made achievements in coordinating prevention and control and in economic and social development. The 13th Five-Year Plan has been accomplished in full. The 14th Five-Year Plan is being comprehensively formulated. We are accelerating the pace to set up a new pattern for development, and are deeply implementing high-quality development. China is the first major economy worldwide to achieve positive growth, and its GDP in 2020 is expected to step up to a new level of 100 trillion yuan. China has seen a good harvest in grain production for 17 years in a row. China has seen breakthroughs in scientific explorations like the Tianwen-1 (Mars mission), Chang'e-5 (lunar probe), and Fendouzhe (deep-sea manned submersible). Construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port is proceeding with vigor. We also defeated severe flooding. With the military and civilians heedless of danger and difficulty, and standing in unity, we managed to minimize the damage of the floods. I inspected 13 provincial-level regions and was glad to see people carefully implementing coronavirus prevention and control measures, racing against time to resume work and production, and sparing no efforts to advance innovation. Everywhere were vibrant scenes of confident, resilient people making the most of every minute. In 2020, China made the historic achievement in establishing a moderately prosperous society in all respects and achieved decisive success in eradicating extreme poverty. We launched the final assault on the fortress of entrenched rural poverty, and cracked this "hardest nut". Through eight years, under the current standard, China has eradicated extreme poverty for the nearly 100 million rural people affected, and all the 832 impoverished counties have shaken off poverty. These years, I have visited 14 contiguous areas of extreme poverty. The unremitting efforts of the folks and the wholehearted contribution of the poverty-eradication cadres often come to my mind. We still need to stay tenacious like a bamboo deeply rooted in the rocks, keep our feet on the ground, and work hard to paint a magnificent picture of rural vitalization, and steadily march ahead towards the goal of common prosperity. This year, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, among others, and 30 years of the development and opening-up of Pudong in Shanghai. As I stand on the southern coast as the spring tide surges and on the colorful bank of the Huangpu River, my mind was filled with a myriad of thoughts. Pilot trials have become models and leading forces, and explorations to innovate have become leading forces of innovation. The opening-up and reform has created miracles of development. In the future, we should further deepen reform and expand opening-up with greater courage, and create more "Stories of Spring". We are not alone on the Great Way and the whole world is one family. After a year of hardship, we can understand more than ever the significance of a community with a shared future for mankind. I had many phone calls with friends from the international community, both old and new, and attended many "cloud conferences". What we discussed most was staying united to combat the pandemic. We still have a long way to go in pandemic prevention and control. People from all over the world should join hands and support each other to dispel the gloom of the pandemic and strive for a better "Earth home". 2021 will see the 100th birthday of the Communist Party of China. Its 100-year journey surges forward with great momentum. Its original aspiration remains even firmer 100 years later. From Shikumen in Shanghai to the South Lake in Jiaxing City, the small red boat (where the first CPC congress concluded) bore the great trust of the people and the hope of the nation. The boat has sailed through turbulent rivers and treacherous shoals, and has voyaged across violent tidal waves, becoming a great ship that navigates China's stable and long-term development. The CPC bears its eternal great cause in mind, and the centenary only ushers in the prime of life. We adhere to putting people at the center, stay true to our original aspiration, keep our mission well in mind, break the waves and sail out for our journey ahead, and we will certainly realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. At the historic crossroad of the "Two Centenary Goals", the new journey of comprehensively building a modern socialist country is about to start. The road ahead is long; striving is the only way forward. We have strived, broken through brambles and thorns, and crossed ten thousand rivers and thousands of mountains. We will continue to strive, march ahead with courage, and create brighter glory! At just this moment, the festive lanterns have been lit, and family members gather for reunion. The New Year is coming. I wish our land to be splendid, our country to be prosperous, and our people to live in peace. I wish you all a harmonious, smooth, and auspicious year, full of happiness! Thank you!

Tunisia gives award to Chinese medical mission, receives donations from Chinese embassy

On the occasion of the end of the 24th Chinese medical mission in Tunisia, an official ceremony took place on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Tunisian health ministry in Tunis. The ceremony was co-chaired by Tunisian Minister of Health Faouzi Mehdi and China's Ambassador to Tunisia Zhang Jianguo. At his inaugural speech, the Tunisian health minister expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its support and assistance to Tunisia, adding that the relations between the two countries have been friendly for a long time and have witnessed development in recent years. According to Mehdi, the event was dedicated particularly to the examination of the tools likely to strengthen and boost Tunisian-Chinese bilateral cooperation and also to give the award of thanks in honor of the members of the Chinese medical mission, which was made up of around 30 doctors and paramedical staff, who will soon leave Tunisia. "The Chinese medical team has accomplished its mission perfectly, we recognize their effort and all the services offered to our population in several regions," Mehdi commented. Mehdi announced the arrival of a new Chinese medical team of different specialities, already in Tunisia and currently in preventive quarantine. "This new Chinese medical team will operate, once out of quarantine, in four hospitals in Tunisia," Mehdi told Xinhua. For his part, the Chinese ambassador hailed the Chinese-Tunisian cooperation in the health sector. Zhang expressed his happiness with the presence of some representatives of the Chinese medical mission "who have just completed a year of hard work, hand in hand with Tunisian doctors, not only here in the capital Tunis, but also in other provinces of the country." "I am very happy to be able to sign a donation document from the Chinese Embassy which includes masks and protective suits with the Health Ministry," said the Chinese ambassador. "I believe that the Chinese-Tunisian bilateral cooperation in the field of public health is an exemplary cooperation... I hope that this cooperation will be further strengthened, especially during the post-epidemic period," said the Chinese diplomat. China dispatched the first medical mission to Tunisia in 1973, and since then, many Chinese doctors have been sent to Tunisia to help the country in the fields including general surgery, obstetrics, radiography, pediatrics, orthopedics, cardiology and acupuncture. Brits in Brussels bid goodbye to EU at candlelit vigil

Date:DECEMBER 31, 2020 Some 20 British people opposed to Brexit chanted the Scottish farewell song Auld Lang Syne and held a candlelit vigil outside the British embassy in Brussels on Thursday (December 31) to 'mourn' Britain's departure from the European union's Single Market. Originally from Bristol, organizer Emma Woodford moved from Thailand to Belgium in 2009 with her Dutch husband and her two daughters, now aged 13 and 15. She said the end of the transition period designed to smooth the UK’s departure from the European Union was 'a very sad day for all of us, another very sad day for all of us after the official Brexit date earlier this year.' Woodford, who gained Belgian citizenship in the wake of the Brexit referendum, said she decided to organize the event through her informal Facebook group "Brexit and the Belgian Brits" so that expats could share their 'sorrow and to mourn and to light a candle to say good bye to the UK.' An IT engineer from West Yorkshire, Jeremy Thomas first moved from Wakefield to Belgium in 1972 and returned in 2002 with his family. He led participants to sing Auld Lang Syne, an 18th century Scots-language song often sung at funerals. "We are mourning what we've lost," he told Reuters. "I have no word for what we're throwing away." One of his three children, Heather, who holds dual Belgian-British citizenship, called 'a shame' Britain's decision to leave the European Union. She said Britain's exit from the Single Market will be 'quite a big and sad moment in British history.' The vigil came 11 months after Britain formally left the European Union and two days after European Union governments approved a trade deal regulating relations between the 27-nation bloc and Britain to enter into effect on January 1. The deal, which preserves Britain's zero-tariff and zero-quota access to the EU's single market of 450 million consumers, was reached on Dec. 24, 4-1/2 years after Britons voted by a slim margin in a referendum to leave the bloc. The approval is a formality after a deal between London and the EU last week. It is needed for the provisional application of the trade agreement from next year, before it is ratified by the European Parliament by the end of February. China says U.S. warship in Taiwan Strait endangers peace and stability

Date:DECEMBER 31, 2020 China firmly denounced on Thursday (December 31) two U.S. warships which sailed through the Taiwan Strait as an act that "severely undermines peace and stability". The two U.S. warships sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait on Thursday drawing protest from Beijing, the second such mission this month and coming almost two weeks after a Chinese aircraft carrier group used the same waterway. China, which claims democratically run Taiwan as its own territory, has been angered by stepped-up U.S. support for the island, including arms sales and sailing warships through the Taiwan Strait, further souring Beijing-Washington relations. Speaking at a regular news briefing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said the trip was "a show of force for provocation" and sent the wrong message to supporters of Taiwan independence. "China will continue to stay on high alert and be ready to respond to all threats and provocations, and firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity," he added. Iraqi artists strive for better post-pandemic future

Many Iraqi artists endeavor to use their artistic creativity to raise public awareness against the COVID-19 pandemic and inspire people with hope for a better future in the post-pandemic era. The Iraqi Ministry of Culture inaugurated the 13th session of the al-Wasiti Festival of Fine Arts late in November in Baghdad. The month-long festival is the first artistic event with the gradual return of life after months of strict measures due to the pandemic. The festival is seen as an opportunity for some 270 Iraqi artists to reach their audiences by showcasing more than 300 works of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and calligraphy. Qasim Hamza, an artist and secretary of the Society, brought a ceramic work about coronavirus. SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): QASIM HAMZA, Secretary of Iraqi Plastic Artists Society "Hope is always there. Humans have been hit by many diseases, such as tuberculosis, plague, and cholera. There're wars that destroyed countries. Second COVID vaccine a "game changer" for UK, says academic

Date:DECEMBER 30, 2020, FILE The approval of the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine is a "game changer" in Britain's effort to curtail to spread of COVID-19, an immunologist told Reuters on Wednesday (December 30). Professor Danny Altmann of Imperial College London said the second vaccine approved for use in the country would help turn the tide amid a burgeoning tide of new infections fuelled in part by a highly transmissible variant of the disease. Britain announced early on Wednesday that it had became the first country to approve the home-grown UK COVID-19 vaccine, adding an easy-to-manage shot to the arsenal of a nation desperate for pandemic relief. It had already begun its rollout of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in early December, but the new option is cheaper and logistically easier to store and transport. The UK has also purchased far more of the Oxford-AstraZeneca shot, with 530,000 doses available for use from early January and 100 million ordered in total - enough to vaccinate 50 million people. Altmann said he hoped the UK could learn from past missteps and achieve high-volume rollout of the vaccine quickly, as the current situation was likely to put much pressure on Britain's National Health Service and lead to a significant number of deaths. The government recorded 981 deaths within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test on Wednesday, the highest number since April 24. The number of new cases was 50,023, slightly down on Tuesday's (December 29) 53,135, according to government data. Altmann said many people in the United Kingdom had rapidly gone from a one-in-1,000 chance of encountering a COVID-positive person to a one-in-75 or one-in-80 chance. "This is like the darkest days of March and April," he added. Some scientists - and regulators in Europe, following the Brexit divorce - are sceptical of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, given confusion over trial results earlier that left experts questioning the robustness of the data. Trial participants who received a half dose of the vaccine, followed by a full dose, were shown to have 90% protection, AstraZeneca said initially, while two full doses offered only 62% protection. Now, however, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said the half-dose regimen's results were not borne out in analysis. But Altmann said the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine would "do the job" in preventing severe disease and hospitalisation just as well as the previously approved Pfizer shot. In the Oxford trial, none of the volunteers who received the vaccine developed severe COVID-19 symptoms, despite the lower efficacy in preventing disease altogether. England's National Health Service will not give people a choice of vaccine, and some experts said the differences between the efficacy rates remain a significant issue for governments around the world. However, the simplicity of use and volume of the newly-approved vaccine presents a huge opportunity for a quick return to something resembling normality, Altmann said. "We can have a largely vaccinated population in March or April or May, compared to late summer or autumn. We will be so much better off and save some lives." WHO, marking year since COVID-19 began, urges fair vaccine distribution to all

Date:DECEMBER 30, 2020, FILE The head of the World Health Organization, marking a year since the first cases of the novel coronavirus were reported by China, urged countries on Wednesday (December 30) to ensure that vaccines are made available to people at risk everywhere, not just in rich nations. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, appealed for $4 billion to buy COVID-19 vaccines for distribution in lower and middle-income countries through the COVAX vaccine facility. "This is the challenge we must rise to in the New Year," Tedros said in a video message issued a day before the first anniversary of China reporting the first cases of pneumonia of unknown origin to the U.N. health agency. He also urged countries to combat conspiracy theories and attacks on science, saying "The choice is easy," and the world can "walk the last miles of this crisis together, helping each other along the way, from sharing vaccines fairly, to offering accurate advice, compassion and care" to all who need them. The COVAX alliance, which aims to secure fair access to COVID-19 vaccines for poor countries, said on Dec. 18 it had agreements in place for nearly 2 billion doses, roughly doubling its supply, with the first deliveries due in early 2021. A WHO-led international mission of experts is due to visit China in the first week of January to investigate the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that emerged in the central city of Wuhan in December 2019. More than 81.84 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1,788,443 have died, according to a Reuters tally. U.S. sale of Hong Kong consulate property held up by China

Date:DECEMBER 30, 2020 The sale of property owned by the U.S. consulate in Hong Kong failed to be completed as scheduled on Wednesday (December 30) after China unexpectedly stepped in and said its approval is needed, the buyer said, amid wide-ranging bilateral tensions. Hong Kong developer Hang Lung Properties said in a regulatory filing that it was unable to complete the purchase of the residential property, the latest twist in the $331.5 million deal in an upscale location in the financial hub. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin later told a daily news briefing in Beijing that the application requirement was "in light of U.S. regulations on the management of registered properties of foreign missions in the United States and based on the principle of reciprocity." "Only when they get the approval in writing from China, can they proceed with the relevant procedures," Wang said. Hang Lung said that after informing the United States, the U.S. on Tuesday (December 29) contested the necessity to comply with the diplomatic obligations. Violence lingers in Afghanistan as peace talks yet to deliver

The negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban group, which started in September in Doha, Qatar to find a peaceful solution to Afghanistan's prolonged crisis, have yet to bear results, while the security situation in the country has seen little improvement. The talks were launched in the wake of the U.S.-Taliban peace deal inked in Doha on Feb. 29. The aim of the deal was to end the war in Afghanistan, withdraw thousands of U.S.-led foreign troops from the country and facilitate the intra-Afghan talks to find a political solution to the country's prolonged war. U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad and Taliban second-in-command Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar signed the agreement, in the absence of the Afghan government. Under the agreement, the intra-Afghan dialogue was supposed to begin on March 10, but it eventually started with a six-month delay on Sept. 12. Although the intra-Afghan dialogue has started, the negotiating teams of the Afghan government and the Taliban outfit have yet to finalize the agenda and procedure of the talks. To facilitate the talks, the Afghan government has set free over 5,000 Taliban prisoners in exchange for 1,000 security personnel held by the Taliban as part of the U.S.-Taliban agreement and in return demanded the Taliban observe the ceasefire. However, the Taliban outfit rejected the demand, saying that there will not be a ceasefire unless both sides reach an agreement on main issues including the future governing system of the country. The armed group has been insisting on the restoration of Islamic Emirate -- the former Taliban regime ousted by the U.S.-led military invasion in late 2001. On the other side, the Afghan government described the current political system as an Islamic setup, saying the "Islamic Republic of Afghanistan" represents all Afghans and will not be compromised. U.S. President Donald Trump has earlier announced to withdraw all the U.S. troops from Afghanistan by Christmas, a decision welcomed by the Taliban outfit, but the withdrawal has yet to be accomplished. Parallel to peace efforts, security incidents have increased across Afghanistan as armed opposition groups intensified activities. The government has accused the Taliban militants of intensifying attacks to gain ground at the negotiating table, a claim rejected by the armed group. The Taliban said they have reduced violence and will not take action unless and until attacked by government forces. In Afghanistan, according to officials, there are more than 20 militant groups including the Taliban, Islamic State (IS) and al-Qaida network. Afghan Interior Ministry said a total of 37 suicide attacks and 510 blasts have killed nearly 500 civilians and injured more than 1,050 others over the past three months. Although there is no statistic on the casualties of government forces and the insurgents, a total of 2,117 civilians had been killed and 3,822 injured from Jan. 1 to Sept. 30 this year, according to a report of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) released in October. Afghanistan's Second Vice President Sarwar Danish in a statement released by his office in November called upon the upcoming U.S. administration to review the peace deal and exert pressure on the Taliban group to reduce violence in the country. Earlier in October, Afghanistan's National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib confirmed that the Afghan government was not part of the U.S.-Taliban peace deal and therefore "doesn't want the conditions to be imposed on Afghans," saying the government is hopeful that the intra-Afghan talks owned by Afghans would lead to returning viable peace in the country. "From the beginning fault was tangible in the U.S.-Taliban peace agreement. One of the mistakes was marginalizing the government of Afghanistan in the so-called peace agreement," political and military analyst Gen. (Rtd) Atequllah Amarkhil told Xinhua. The analyst also noted that "lack of consensus among negotiating teams to finalize the agenda of the peace talks and observe ceasefire" clearly indicates the faults in the U.S-Taliban deal. "It is a complex process. In addition to the Taliban, there are several more militant groups such as al-Qaida, Islamic State (IS) and splinted Taliban who are against the peace deal. If peace deal inked with Doha-based Taliban, other groups would continue to fight," renowned analyst Nazari Pariani said. Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Kabul. (XHTV)

Central African Republic President Touadera votes in election

Date:DECEMBER 27, 2020 EDITORS NOTE: PART AUDIO QUALITY AS INCOMING Central African Republic President Faustin-Archange Touadera voted in a presidential and legislative poll on Sunday (December 27) in the capital Bangui. The elections were held under a cloud of violence as government, international partners and United Nations peacekeepers have sought to hold off a rebel advance in the days before. Militias hostile to Touadera, who is seeking a second term, have stepped up attacks since the constitutional court this month rejected several candidates, including former President Francois Bozize. Touadera's international security partners have responded to the violence by sending additional troops and equipment, including 300 Russian military instructors and 300 Rwandan peacekeepers. Touadera is considered the favourite in the field of 17 candidates. The election will go to a second round if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote. Some polling stations in the capital Bangui opened with a slight delay amid heavy security, following sporadic gunfire heard during the night. Opposition candidate Anicet-Georges Dologuele, who received Bozize's support after the court cancelled his candidacy, also voted in Bangui where there were long lines of voters at many of the polling stations. But there are concerns that a substantial number of the 1.8 million registered voters in the sparsely populated nation larger than France will not be able to vote in remote towns, some controlled by armed rebels. Heavy gunfire was reported early on Sunday in the town of Bouar, around 435 km (270 miles) northwest of the capital, a resident said. The country's constitutional court on Saturday (December 26) rejected an appeal from several opposition candidates calling for the election to be postponed. The government and a United Nation's mission in the country had rejected a postponement fearing a power vacuum that could worsen the crisis. 嵐の影響で道路が冠水、濡れない様にフェンスの上を進む歩行者=イギリス

An amusing video has emerged of a pedestrian trying to cross through floodwaters today (27th December) in West Yorkshire. Barnsdale Road flooded between Castleford & Allerton Bywater this afternoon after the River Aire burst it's banks nearby and had to be closed to motorists. One pedestrian was determined to make it to the other side by scaling a fence and shimmying along. His attempt took approximately 15 minutes but was eventually picked up by a passing motorist in a 4x4, who gave him a lift to dry land. The flooding happened after Storm Bella brought strong winds and heavy rain to the region. This video is best played to the Mission Impossible Theme Tune ( Original Title: Amusing video of pedestrian in Storm Bella floods. )

China's success in poverty reduction greatest achievement in world's history: Cambodian official

China's success in poverty alleviation is the greatest achievement in the world's history, and its experience is really useful for other developing countries to learn from, Cambodian government chief spokesman Phay Siphan said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua earlier this month. China has vowed to eradicate extreme poverty by the end of 2020. The country declared victory over its poverty reduction work earlier this month, saying that nearly 100 million Chinese have been lifted out of poverty since 2013. SOUNDBITE (English): PHAY SIPHAN, Cambodian government chief spokesman "Eight years ago, there were almost 100 million people living in absolute poverty in China. Achieving this goal means lifting over 10 million people out of poverty every year, 1 million per month, 20 persons every minute. It's almost a mission impossible. However, I'm optimistic about China's poverty reduction work, because China's economy is very robust and the CPC, Communist Party of China, has been working relentlessly to achieve its goal. China's endeavors to reach the goal show Chinese leadership's strong commitment to the people. For example, China established a huge database with information of over 100 million people in poverty years ago. This is a great work in the poverty reduction history in the world. Over the past 40-plus years of reform and opening-up, more than 700 million people in China have been lifted out of poverty -- more than 70 percent of the global reduction in poverty. This is the greatest achievement in the poverty reduction history in the world. China's experience is very helpful for other countries, especially developing countries, like Cambodia." UN urges Libyans to consolidate efforts towards national elections

United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Thursday urged the Libyans to consolidate efforts towards national elections scheduled to take place in December 2021. A celebration of the 69th independence day of Libya took place on Thursday in the center of the capital Tripoli. "Libyans celebrate this national occasion with one year to go before national elections planned on Dec. 24, 2021, as put forth in the roadmap endorsed by the members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF)," UNSMIL said in a statement on the occasion. The mission called on the Libyans to consolidate their efforts and take courageous steps towards national reconciliation, and look forward to a bright future for all Libyans to live in peace and prosperity, affirming its full commitment to assisting the Libyan people in building their unified state. Following the 2011 uprising, Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid continuous armed conflict, political division and economic instability. A total of 75 Libyans representing the social and political spectrum of the Libyan society participated in the UN-sponsored LPDF that was held from Nov. 7 to 15 in Tunisia's capital Tunis to discuss a political roadmap to achieve lasting peace in war-torn Libya. The participants agreed to hold general elections in Libya on Dec. 24, 2021. Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Tripoli. (XHTV)

Women in Bangui demand peaceful election

Date:DECEMBER 24, 2020 Hundreds of women marched on Thursday (December 24) to the headquarters of a UN peacekeeping mission in Central African Republic's capital, Bangui, calling for peaceful elections on Sunday (December 27). It follows days of violence in the country. On Wednesday (December 23) panic gripped the streets of the capital after rumours spread that the town of Boali, 80km north of Bangui, had been taken over by rebels after the FACA (Central African Armed Forces) had been pushed out. MINUSCA - the UN's peacekeeping force - said the minister of defence had issued an assurance that Bangui was under control despite rumours opposition groups were closing in. Juda Christine Siotene, from the Association of Central African women, said women were demanding peace in the country and were saying no to the rebels and those opposed to the elections. Rwanda and Russia have sent military aid to help the government restore calm. Former president Francois Bozize had been campaigning for the presidential election before the country's top court rejected his candidacy. The government's accused Bozize of plotting a coup with members of his family and armed groups to attack two towns near Bangui after the court decision. China says military cooperation mission with Russia not aimed at third party

Date:DECEMBER 23, 2020 Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday (December 23) that a China-Russian military cooperation mission was part of annual cooperation plans between the two countries and not aimed at any third party, after South Korea said it scrambled fighter jets in response to an intrusion into its air defence identification zone by 19 Russian and Chinese military aircraft on Tuesday (December 22). Four Chinese warplanes entered the Korea Air Defence Identification Zone (KADIZ) followed by 15 Russian aircraft, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said that the Chinese and Russian military aircrafts had "strictly abided by relevant provisions of the international law, and did not enter the airspace of other countries." The South Korean military said the Chinese military had informed South Korea that its planes were carrying out routine training before the Chinese aircraft entered the KADIZ. French policemen died in 'despicable' circumstances, interior minister says

Date:DECEMBER 23, 2020 THIS EDIT REPLACES 3152-FRANCE-SECURITY WITH SAME IMAGES BUT OF BETTER QUALITY Three French police officers were shot dead by a man when they arrived at a home in Saint-Just, a remote commune in central France, to respond to a domestic violence call, police said on Wednesday (December 23). A woman who was the reported victim of the domestic violence had sought refuge on the roof of the house and was subsequently rescued by police, France's BFMTV broadcaster reported. The house caught fire, police said, and the suspected gunman, who was known to law enforcement over child maintenance issues, was later found dead in his car. It was not immediately clear how he died or where the car was located. Police had previously said the man was armed and they were trying to track him down. The incident took place in a small hamlet in Saint-Just, about 500 km (310 miles) southeast of Paris. A fourth officer was wounded in the attack and his injuries were not life-threatening, the interior ministry said. Officials did not comment on the motive. France's interior minister described the attacker as a "maniac." The mayor of Ambert, the main town nearby, said the family of the suspect had moved in about five years ago, and was not very involved in community life. The suspected gunman was 48 and known to law enforcement for non-payment of child maintenance, according to an official in the prosecutor's office in the nearby city of Clermont-Ferrand. Officers from the local gendarme police service arrived at the house in the hamlet early in the morning, after receiving reports about a woman who had been beaten by her partner, the interior ministry said in a statement. Officer Arno Mavel, 21, died from his injuries, the ministry said. In a second unit of reinforcements, Lieutenant Cyrille Morel, 45, and adjutant Remi Dupuis, 37, were both killed, it said. After the shootings, police commanders sent in a rapid-response unit, deployed reinforcements to seal off the area, and launched a manhunt for the suspected attacker. What to know about China's new Long March-8 rocket

China's new medium-lift carrier rocket Long March-8 made its maiden flight on Tuesday, sending five satellites into planned orbit, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA). The rocket blasted off from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on the coast of southern China's island province of Hainan at 12:37 p.m. (Beijing Time). The Long March-8 rocket has a total length of 50.3 meters, with a takeoff mass of 356 tonnes. It can carry a payload of at least 4.5 tonnes to a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 700 km. The rocket fills the gap in China's launch capability to the sun-synchronous orbit from 3 tonnes to 4.5 tonnes, and is of great significance for accelerating the upgrading of launch vehicles, according to the CNSA. The rocket was developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), a subsidiary of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. It has a 3.35-meter-diameter first stage, a 3-meter-diameter second stage, a 4.2-meter-diameter fairing, and two 2.25-meter-diameter strap-on boosters. It adopts technologies used in the Long March-5 and Long March-7 rockets, and uses non-toxic and non-polluting propellants. The rocket will enrich China's launch vehicle variety and help expand the country's aerospace activities, according to the CALT. It will promote the upgrading of China's medium-sized launch vehicles and satisfy the needs of high-density launch missions for medium and low-orbit satellites, said Xiao Yun, chief commander of the rocket. Song Zhengyu, chief designer of the Long March-8 rocket from the CALT, said the design of the rocket was based on technologies developed for previous Long March rockets. "It will lay a technological foundation for the development of large and heavy rockets, shortening development periods and reducing costs," Song said. The rocket can send one or multiple satellites in a single launch and can undertake launch networking missions for low-Earth orbit satellites, according to Wu Yitian, deputy chief designer of the rocket. Long March-8 is the first among China's carrier rockets to adopt thrust control technology, which will enhance its adaptability to different missions and help test-related technologies for rocket reuse. "Long March-8 will offer a platform for the application of and experiments for recycling, intelligent and automatic technologies," Wu said. The five experimental satellites launched by the rocket will carry out the in-orbit verification of microwave imaging and other technologies. They will conduct experiments in space science, remote sensing and communication technologies. Tuesday's launch was the 356th mission of the Long March rocket series. China's scientific research ship Tansuo-2 returns after ocean expedition

China's scientific research ship Tansuo-2 returned to port in the city of Sanya, south China's Hainan Province on Monday, after completing its ocean expedition. The vessel carrying the 4,500-meter deep-sea manned submersible Shenhai Yongshi (Deep Sea Warrior) berthed and anchored Monday evening, according to the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. As the second mother ship of China's new deep-sea manned submersible Fendouzhe (Striver), Tansuo-2 conducted several joint deep dives with Tansuo-1, another mother ship, in the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, the world's deepest natural trench in the western Pacific. Fendouzhe onboard Tansuo-1 set a national record by diving to a depth of 10,909 meters in the Mariana Trench on Nov. 10. The deep-sea video lander "Canghai," carried by Tansuo-2, realized the world's first live, real-time 4K video broadcast at a depth of 10,000 meters in seawater. SOUNDBITE (Chinese): GE WENQING, Researcher of Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences "The Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench has no light underwater. However, we can see a real world in the Challenger Deep through the light and video system. It's so amazing. There are many creatures such as shrimps, sea cucumbers in the Challenger Deep. It's beyond many people's imagination that creatures can survive in such a barren environment." Tansuo-2 continued its scientific research mission in the Mariana Trench after completing the joint operation with Tansuo-1. The submersible Deep Sea Warrior has successfully completed 32 deep dives during the 57-day expedition. It has set a new world record for 12 consecutive deep dives within eight days, staying in the water for an average of 8 hours and 27 minutes. The Deep Sea Warrior has obtained a large number of videos, large organisms, in-situ micro-organisms, sediments and rock samples, accumulating valuable data for genetic research on the area and understanding its geological structure, according to the institute.
