This is the shocking moment two revellers were injured after being flung from a fairground ride when the mechanical arm snapped. The pair were among hundreds of locals celebrating at the carnival in Antipolo City, the Philippines, on December 29. They were riding on the 'Spiral Jet' ride - a type of mechanical swing carousel - when the arm holding their gondola suddenly broke off. Footage shows how the boy and girl were hurled to the ground while still locked into the chairs. A large piece of equipment then dropped inches from them. The shocked bystander, who asked to remain anonymous, said he was waiting in line for his turn on the ride when the accident happened. He said: ''There was no indication of a problem with the ride. The carriage just suddenly snapped. The two people were hurt and the ride was closed. "The ride was working fine before them, but the pole connecting the carriage with the ride seemed to have leaks. There seemed to be gas coming out of it." The ride called "Spiral Jet" is one of the main attractions of a fairground in Antipolo City. In the video, the ride is seen traveling at its full speed as the sifts lift up and down using hydraulics. The two injured victims were conscious but rushed to the hospital immediately to receive treatment. The operators said they are ready to help the victims with the hospital and medical expenses. Carnival management told local media that those affected by the accident could contact their office for assistance. Investigations into why the seat dislodged are on-going. Christian Schürch recently created this quite mesmeric application in Lucerne, Switzerland – a robot that controls a makeshift train track. Christian explained the dynamic behind this project: “The gripper stops over the train to detect its current position. It does that with a reed switch on the gripper, which closes when too close to the magnet attached to the train. Basically the robot moves along a circular path while continuously waiting for the switch to close.’ ‘When that happens it interrupts its current movement (skip function) to evaluate it’s current position and set the speed for its next movement. Maybe you could do that without stopping somehow, but since I don’t really know what I’m doing, I’m already surprised that I got this far. I don’t have any other sensors, so I rely on the tracks to stay at the place I want them to be."

KAZAKHSTAN: RUSSIAN SOYUZ ROCKET PLACED ON LAUNCH PAD FOR BLAST-OFF TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION Date:OCTOBER 12, 2004 Russian Soyuz rocket placed on launch pad for blast-off to the International Space Station. A Soyuz TMA-5 spacecraft was hoisted onto the launch pad at Russia's space flight complex in Baikonur, Kazakhstan on Tuesday (October 12) in preparation for Thursday's blast-off to the International Space Station (ISS). The cigar-shaped rocket, rolled out of its giant hangar on a chilly and windy dawn on the bleak steppes of Kazakhstan, will take a U.S.-Russian crew on the 10th long-term mission to the station. Russian Salizhan Sharipov, NASA astronaut Leroy Chiao and Yuri Shargin, a lieutenant-colonel in Russia's space forces, will relieve Russia's Gennady Padalka and NASA's Michael Fincke after their six-month stint in orbit. Shargin returns with the outgoing crew in 10 days. The R-7 prototype of the rocket that will blast off on Thursday was originally designed to fire nuclear warheads at cold war foes. Now this single-use booster still stuns experts with 98-99 percent reliability. The United States' grounded Space Shuttle fleet may resume flights to the International Space Station (ISS) next May or June, a senior ISS official said on Tuesday. Russia has borne the brunt of ferrying crews and cargo to the multi-billion dollar, 16-nation station since the Columbia shuttle disintegrated on re-entry over Texas in February 2003, killing seven astronauts. "Our Russian colleagues have done an outstanding job, always have and continue to do it. They are very professional organisation and we are happy and proud to be associated with them and the international space station programme. As far as when the Space Shuttle returns to flight, the current date we are looking at is the May time frame. There is a mid-May to early June launch window and currently the team is planning on meeting that launch window. Based on what I know being close to my shuttle colleagues, that is a very doable window. So we're looking forward to return to flight in the May time frame," said Michael Suffredini, deputy director of the ISS programme. Officials at U.S. space agency NASA said earlier the Shuttle Discovery should be launched in April or early May. The ISS was put into orbit in 1998 and hosted its first astronauts in 2000. The loss of the Columbia shuttle stopped assembly work at the station which will house at least four astronauts starting in 2009, but will never support long-term visits as originally planned. An avid Star Wars fan born without his right hand brought his fandom to life by having a unique lightsaber attachment made for his arm, even getting approval from Luke Skywalker himself. Trace Wilson was born without his right hand, and for the last two years has been getting to grips with living with a bionic arm. Now 25, Trace has decided that a bionic arm just doesn’t cut it anymore, as the avid Star Wars fan has crafted a working lightsaber from his apartment in Richmond, Virginia, which can attach to his prosthetic forearm. Displaying his Sith-red Saber on June 28, Trace was thrilled with the outcome of his bionic attachment from a galaxy far, far away. He wasn’t the only one, with his new addition gaining interest from Mark Hammil, who Tweeted Trace to say it was ‘fantastic’ before suggesting he should also use his new powers to help the Jedis. Trace said: “I attend a lot of comic conventions and other events, and I often create costumes and cosplay for amputee/bionic characters with my other bionic friends. “I wanted to come up with a creative concept that hadn’t been done before that incorporated my bionic arm. “The lightsaber parts are made by Saberforge and the adapter that allows me to connect the lightsaber to my forearm was designed by me. “I created the design, 3D printed a prototype, and then Saberforge machined a final version out of metal for me.” Trace has written a series of Children’s Books in order to help kids with disabilities, and he hopes his handiwork will aid in inspiring many more people. Trace said: “When I wore the lightsaber, I felt accomplished and excited to share it with fellow cosplay enthusiasts, the amputee community, and of course Star Wars fans. “I’ve had an overwhelmingly positive reaction to the video, including a response from Star Wars actor Mark Hamill on Twitter. “I want people to feel inspired, and to see how easily a disability or “weakness” can be turned into a strength.” (Original Title: The force is strong with this one: star wars fan born without right hand swaps bionic arm for awesome bionic lightsaber and gets luke skywalkers approval)
A four-year-old amputee was delighted to receive a new bionic arm which will allow him to grab and hold objects. Giulio Spaziani, from Pomezia, Italy, was born in April 2015 with an underdeveloped right arm which ends just after the elbow. The young boy is now becoming more and more independent thanks also to a bionic arm with a hand that can be moved through electrical signals. In a video shot on February 22, Giulio breaks out in happiness as he tries out his new limb at the ITOP SpA Officine Ortopediche, a clinic in Palestrina, Italy, excitedly asking orthopaedic technician Daniele Zenardi ‘can I keep it’. Giulio’s mother, Samuela Sarda, said: “For many this could look like a simple mechanical movement, but for someone who doesn’t have a hand, this is a miracle.” This is the first time Giulio wears a robotic arm which can be activated and moved, even though he’s been wearing prosthetics since he was just a few months old. Samuela said: “When Giulio was younger, he had a fake arm which he couldn’t do anything with. “Early on we decided to call the arm ‘Energy’, a name that his brother Leonardo picked after a cartoon he had watched. “It just felt nicer than telling him to go get his prosthetic arm. “The name stuck and now even doctors at the clinic call it ‘Energy’.” According to Samuela, the ultrasound scan during pregnancy did not detect the deformity, so that when Giulio was born it was a massive shock for her and dad Massimo. Samuela said: “When these things happen you either let them get to you and live unhappily, or you stand up and fight and life becomes even more beautiful than before. “When Giulio was born, his brother Leonardo was home waiting for us, and that’s what gave us the strength to get back and start fighting to make Giulio’s life a normal and happy one.” (Original Title: Touching moment four-year-old becomes euphoric over new bionic arm)
