バイデン米大統領 会見でスウェーデンとフィンランドのNATO加盟申請を支持すると発言
US President Joe Biden gave remarks supporting Sweden's and Finland's applications to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) during a press conference held at the White House in Washington on May 19. Biden hosted Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and Finnish President Sauli Niinisto at the White House on Thursday to discuss the "mutual security guarantees" of the NATO alliance amid the threat of escalation from Russia as it continues its offensive in Ukraine. "Both Finland and Sweden are already working in coordination with the United States and our other allies and partners to support the brave people of Ukraine as they defend their freedom against Russia's invasion," Biden said. "We have consulted closely at every stage, as Sweden and Finland made their determination [to apply to NATO], and today I'm proud to assure them that they have the full, total, complete backing of the United States of America …. New members joining NATO is not a threat to any nation, it never has been. NATO's purpose is to defend against aggression," Biden said. Niinisto spoke on Turkey's concerns over Finland's potential NATO membership, assuring that Finland is committed to mutual security interests, and reiterated support for the people of Ukraine. Andersson spoke on the shared values and beliefs of democracy and freedom between the United States and Sweden, which she said are "being put to the test." Andersson said, "During dark times, it is great to be among close friends." ウクライナ外相、NATO会議に向けたアジェンダを発表=ベルギー
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said he had a three-item agenda to discuss at NATO headquarters in Brussels on April 7: "Weapons, weapons, and weapons." He said "the best way to help Ukraine" was to provide it with "all necessary" means to defeat Russia, "so that the war does not spill over" outside Ukraine. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said weapons provided by NATO allies were "proving [their] importance on the battle ground every day". Kuleba said there should be no distinction between "defensive" and "offensive" weapons supplied to Ukraine. "Every weapon," he said, "used against a foreign aggressor is defensive by definition." ロシア軍は撤退せず、ウクライナで再編成しているとNATO発表
Russian forces in Ukraine are not withdrawing but regrouping, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday (March 31), commenting on Moscow's announcements about a scaling down of military operations around Kyiv. "According to our intelligence, Russian units are not withdrawing but repositioning. Russia is trying to regroup, resupply and reinforce its offensive in the Donbas region," Stoltenberg told reporters in Brussels. "At the same time, Russia maintains pressure on Kyiv and other cities. So we can expect additional offensive actions, bringing even more suffering." Moscow says it is now focusing on "liberating" the Donbas region - two southeastern provinces partly controlled by separatists Russia has backed since 2014. Ukraine and the West have both reacted with suspicion to that announcement, suspecting a ploy by Moscow in response to the heavy losses of men and equipment it has suffered over five weeks of war in which Ukraine has mounted fierce and effective resistance. "We need to judge Russia on their actions, not on their words, and it remains to be seen whether there is any willingness from the Russian side to find a political solution," Stoltenberg said. Ukraine and the West say Russia, which launched its invasion on Feb. 24 with the aim of demilitarising the country, according to President Vladimir Putin, has been forced to outline more modest goals after getting heavily bogged down and failing to take Kyiv and other major cities. Moscow denies that was ever the objective. NATOに到着したラトビア外相 エネルギー部門での制裁が望ましいと発言
NATO foreign ministers met in Brussels on Friday (March 4) to discuss Russia's invasion of Ukraine as Kyiv called on Western allies to implement a no-fly zone or provide them with more planes to protect civilians and infrastructure, including nuclear plants. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has consistently called for a no-fly zone since Moscow's invasion more than a week ago, but NATO allies have resisted a step that could drag them into the war with nuclear-armed Russia. Speaking ahead of the meeting in NATO's Brussels headquarters, Romania's Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu said the alliance must adapt military posture at its eastern flank to new reality after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, without spelling out if he wanted permanent presence of allied troops there. "We have to adapt the posture to the reality, which shows that the Russians troops are in Ukraine and in Belarus, so we need to rethink everything," he told reporters. Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics called for NATO and the European Union to discuss the issue of energy supply. "I do believe that Russia still can finance its war through (selling) gas. I understand how difficult it would be for all of us, but then let's make a choice," he told reporters. Also arriving to take part in the meeting, the European Union's top diplomat said that all options remained on the table when asked if a new round of sanctions could involve the suspension of the EU's gas imports from Russia. He said earlier the OSCE should consider investigating "acts that can be considered war crimes." While some countries indicated a willingness to discuss a no-fly zone, some like Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky made clear they did not consider it a viable option. "No-fly zone means NATO being in a conflict since it will be NATO's forces enforcing this no-fly zone," he said. The comment came after Zelenskiy said on Thursday (March 3) that if allies wouldn't meet his request to protect Ukrainian air space, they should instead provide Kyiv with more war planes. NATO、東欧の同盟国への兵力配備を強化すると発表
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on February 25 that the organization will deploy extra troops to countries in Eastern Europe that are part of the alliance. Speaking after a virtual summit of 30 world leaders on Friday, Stoltenberg said Russia had "shattered peace in Europe" and that NATO was deploying elements of its response force. "The United States, Canada, and European allies have deployed thousands of more troops to the eastern part of the alliance," Stoltenberg said. "We will do what it takes to protect and defend every ally and every inch of NATO territory." トルコのエルドアン大統領 ロシア攻撃に対するNATOの反応は決定的なものではないと述べる
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday (February 25) that reaction from NATO and Western countries to Russia's assault on Ukraine had not been decisive, adding he hoped a NATO summit on Friday would lead to a more determined approach from the alliance. "NATO should have taken a more decisive step," Erdogan said after Friday prayers in Istanbul. Erdogan, who has forged good relations with the leaders of both Russia and Ukraine, had previously offered to mediate in the conflict. ウクライナに関する首脳会議が開かれるベルギー デモ参加者がNATOに行動を起こすときが来たと訴える
Ukrainians living in Brussels staged a noisy protest opposite NATO headquarters on Friday (February 25) calling on the alliance to intervene to shore up Ukraine's defence in the face of the Russian invasion. With missiles raining down on the capital Kyiv, the protesters called for military assistance from leaders meeting virtually with Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. "We have been asking for support for already eight years since the war in Ukraine started. The support was very mild, was very careful, it's no time to be careful any more, NATO has to act," said protester Anna Melenchuk. Protester Ivan Zinchenko said the country particularly needed help setting up a no-fly zone. A day after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a three-pronged invasion of Ukraine from the north, east and south, air raid sirens again wailed over Kyiv on Friday. NATO本部 ロシアのウクライナ攻撃計画が継続中だと発表
Russia has not stopped planning for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine since recognising the independence of separatist enclaves, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday (February 22). "We see that more and more of the (Russian) forces are moving out of the camps and are in combat formations and ready to strike," he said after an extraordinary meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission Stoltenberg condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to recognize the independence of Ukraine's breakaway Donetsk and Luhansk's region, calling it a "flagrant violation of international law." The comments came as the European Union is close to agreeing on sanctions on Russia that would put politicians and officials on blacklists, ban trading in Russian state bonds, and target imports and exports with separatist entities. The EU had repeatedly said it was ready to impose "massive consequences" on Russia's economy if Moscow invaded Ukraine but has also cautioned that, given the EU's close energy and trade ties to Russia, it wanted to increase sanctions in stages. 東欧は当面、NATOの強化を必要とするとラトビア首相が会見
Eastern Europe will need a bolstered NATO presence for the foreseeable future due to the security threat posed by Russia, Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins said on Thursday (February 10) in Berlin ahead of a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. "It's very much needed that Germany not only is present in the Baltics, which is important, but takes a leading role in helping to lead all of the European Union and NATO through these difficult times," Karins said ahead of the meeting with Scholz, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda. Scholz warned Russia of economic and political consequences should it ramp up military aggression toward Ukraine, adding that Germany and its allies were ready for dialogue with Moscow and wanted peace. "What is at stake at the moment is nothing less than preventing a war in Europe. We want peace," Scholz told reporters. "Further military aggression by Russia against Ukraine would have very serious political, economic and strategic consequences for Russia," he said. "At the same time, we are ready for serious talks with Russia, for a dialogue on European security issues." Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas added NATO needed to do more still to bolster the eastern flank.
