Thousands protest Modi's upcoming visit in Bangladesh
Date:MARCH 6, 2020 Thousands protested against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit in Bangladesh's capital of Dhaka on Friday (March 6). Protesters gathered around the national mosque after Friday Prayers and then proceeded to march through the city's streets, chanting slogans and beating effigies of Modi with their shoes. Protesters attempted to march to Indian High Commission, but were stopped by riot police. Local media estimated that around 5000 people participated in the march. Modi is scheduled to visit Dhaka on March 17, but recent communal violence against Muslims in neighbouring India has sparked calls for the visit to be cancelled. Last week, at least 44 people were killed and hundreds injured in the worst communal riots in the Indian capital in decades, triggered by clashes between supporters of a new citizenship law and those against it. Muslim couple struggles with identification of dead father burnt in Delhi violence
Date:MARCH 2, 2020 A young Muslim couple have spent nearly a week outside a morgue at a New Delhi hospital, waiting for the identification of the woman's father, who was shot dead and then burnt in the communal carnage. Gulshan and her nearly blind husband Mohammad Nasaruddin have been waiting for doctors to conduct a DNA test on what they believe is the leg of her dead father, the only remaining piece of his body that they could recover. "My father's whole body was burnt and only one leg was recovered. So, right now the doctors are saying, how do we believe that it was your father? You can't recognise anything through just one leg," Gulshan said. Gulshan's father Anwar, 61, reared goats and was the only salary-earning member of the family. He used to not only run the household but also pay for the medical treatment of Gulshan's husband Nasaruddin, who had lost his eyesight during an industrial accident four years ago. Earlier on Monday (March 2) police said that at least 41 people had died in two days of Hindu-Muslim clashes in New Delhi last week, the worst communal riots in the capital in decades. A week ago, a mob of several hundred people chanting Hindu nationalist slogans torched two mosques and dozens of Muslim houses, eyewitnesses said, while nearby houses carrying Hindu symbols were left untouched. In Shiv Vihar, a low-income area in northeast Delhi where some of the worst violence took place, charred motorcycles, and burnt houses lay testimony to the violence the area had been subjected to. Hundreds of thousands of people - led by students and Muslim groups - have been demonstrating for more than two months, amid fears that the government will also launch a population register that could leave many Muslims stateless. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party says the citizenship law, which grants refuge to non-Muslim minorities from across south Asia, is required to protect those groups from persecution. Critics say it is discriminatory and contravenes the spirit of India's secular constitution. (Production: Bhushan Kumar, Sunil Kataria) (Caption:2028AS-INDIA-CITIZENSHIP_PROTESTS_MUSLIM_COUPLE)

Indian Muslim family counts its losses after mob burns shop
Date:FEBRUARY 29, 2020 After days of deadly violence in India's capital New Delhi's, business owner Aftab Khan returned to his looted bicycle shop on Saturday (February 29) to assess the damage. Debris remained scattered along the streets leading to his shop, which he has been running for eight years, a remnant of the wave of violence that hit Delhi's north-eastern areas this week. Piled outside his damaged shop in Bhajanpura were Aftab's charred bicycles, which he said were only a small part of his stock. The rest were looted by the rioters, the 38-year old business owner said. His mother Shabana was inconsolable, saying they had lost all they had and were struggling to keep the family safe from the rampaging mobs. At least 42 people were killed and hundreds more injured in the worst sectarian violence in Delhi in decades, as groups of Hindus and Muslims clashed. The violence began after weeks of protests over a citizenship law that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government introduced in December, which eases the path to Indian citizenship for minority groups from neighbouring Muslim-majority countries. Critics say the law is biased against Muslims and undermines India's secular constitution. Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party has denied having any bias against India's 180 million Muslims. Death toll in Indian capital communal violence rises to 42
The death toll during communal violence in the Indian capital city Delhi Friday evening rose to 42, officials said. Over 350 people were injured in the violence that ravaged the city for three days. Police officials Friday said the situation was under control, but the personnel were still deployed in the affected areas. The violence left a trail of damage in the northeastern parts of the city as torched vehicles, vandalised shops and burnt buildings present a scray look. Delhi Police has come under fierce criticism for its apparent inaction. "A total of 123 FIRs have been registered and around 630 people detained. Senior police officers deployment will remain the same as today. Things are getting normal, distress calls have drastically gone down," Delhi Police PRO M S Randhawa told the media. Unrelenting communal violence broke out in the northeastern part of the city following which mobs armed with sticks and rods resorted to arson, looting and vandalism. Many people, especially Muslims, have left their homes in the affected areas and took shelter in other safer locations. The clashes broke out between pro- and anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) groups in the northeastern part of the city on Sunday and took an ugly turn on Monday and Tuesday. Protests against the controversial new citizenship law triggered on December 11 last year, the day India's upper house of parliament passed the law. Since then, there has been no let-up in the protests. The law aims at granting citizenship to illegal immigrants belonging to six religions-Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, Parsi and Christianity-from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, it has kept out Muslim immigrants from applying for citizenship. So far, the violence against the law has killed over 70 people across India. A small Delhi hospital overwhelmed by wave of violence
Date:FEBRUARY 27, 2020 As deadly violence erupted in the northeast of New Delhi this week, with armed mobs rampaging the streets, a small hospital located in a densely packed Muslim neighbourhood found itself at the epicentre of the unrest. Al-Hind Hospital, in the riot-torn Mustafabad neighbourhood, was flooded with patients this week, and it has also become a place of refuge for people whose homes were burnt or destroyed. At least 38 people were killed and hundreds more injured in the worst sectarian violence in Delhi in decades, as groups of Hindus and Muslims clashed. On Thursday (February 27) people were still trickling in, saying they had suffered acid attacks and beatings with rods. Doctors described being overwhelmed on Monday and Tuesday when dozens of wounded streamed into the 15-bed, two-story building. Some were carried on people's shoulders and others on wooden carts, stretching the hospital's resources to the limit. Many medicines ran out, as did oxygen supplies. But the flow of patients didn't stop, said doctor Mehraj Ekram. (Production: Anushree Fadnavis, Sunil Kataria) (Caption:5245AS-INDIA-CITIZENSHIP_PROTESTS_HOSPITAL)

20 killed, nearly 200 injured in Indian capital violence
The death toll in the communal violence in the Indian capital city New Delhi on Wednesday rose to 20, while as nearly 200 persons were injured, officials said. "So far 20 are dead and 189 are injured in our hospital," Dr Sunil Kumar, medical director of Guru Teg Bahadur hospital told media. "The condition of some of the injured is serious but the majority of them are stable." Authorities say they have deployed adequate police and paramilitary in the affected areas. However, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said Wednesday that curfew should be imposed and army called in to contain the violence. According to Kejriwal, police was unable to control the situation. "Army should be called in and curfew imposed in rest of affected areas immediately," Kejriwal wrote on twitter. Unrelenting communal violence broke out in the northeastern part of the city following which mobs armed with sticks and rods resorted to arson, looting and vandalism. Violence over controversial citizenship law continues in Indian capital as death toll rises to 18
The death toll of the communal violence in the Indian capital city of Delhi rose to 18 on Wednesday, with nearly 200 people injured, a health official said. "Five more deaths have been reported today and the toll now stands at 18," a health official at Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) hospital said. Nearly 200 people, including policemen, have been injured in the unrelenting violence. Authorities have closed all educational institutions in the affected northeastern part of the city and postponed board examinations. On Tuesday night, India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited areas affected by the violence and met top police officials. The High Court of Delhi, in an emergency late-night hearing meanwhile, asked the police to ensure safe passage and emergency treatment for those injured in the violence. The city has witnessed massive violence as armed mobs rampaged through parts of northeast Delhi, looting, vandalizing and burning buildings and vehicles. Police early Wednesday dispersed people who had gathered outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence, demanding action against perpetrators of the violence. The assembled people mainly consisted of students from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), members of the Alumni Association of Jamia Millia Islamia (AAJMI) and Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC). Reports said the students demanded to meet Kejriwal and submitted a charter of demands over Delhi violence, while the police used water cannons and detained some of them on the spot. The clashes broke out between pro- and anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) groups in the northeastern part of the city on Sunday and took an ugly turn on Monday and Tuesday. Protests against the controversial new citizenship law were triggered on Dec. 11, 2019, the day India's upper house of parliament passed the law, and there has been no let-up in the protests since then. The law aims at granting citizenship to illegal immigrants belonging to six religions, namely Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, Parsi and Christianity from countries including Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Men, women and children lined up to have the tricolour flag painted on their cheeks and across their eyes, saying that they belonged in India. The Indian government has faced weeks of acrimonious and, at times, violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which was passed by Modi's government in December. The new law eases the path for non-Muslim minorities from the neighbouring Muslim-majority nations of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan to gain Indian citizenship. 抗議の最中、インドでもクリスマスを祝う
The growing protests in India against the highly controversial citizenship bill took a festive hiatus on Wednesday (December 25) as students and protestors in New Delhi gathered to celebrate Christmas. Lots of Santas dressed in the typical attire with a white beard and red caps were seen around. The silver bells which have jingled in nursery rhymes too are seen at the venue. The students were joined in the Christmas celebrations by social activists, religious leaders, priests, and the local community members. Students decorated the road outside the university with Christmas finery and carried on their protest, voicing dissent against the new law. A student dressed up as Santa Claus was carrying a poster which read, ''Merry Christmas everyone apart from Delhi Police'', expressing the students'' anger towards the force for its alleged brutality on them on December 15 when the police personnel had entered the campus and lathi-charged" them after violent protests outside. The incident took place on Thursday (December 19) in Puttana Chetty Townhall, a protesting site located at the centre of the Bengaluru, Karnataka. Visuals show a large number of protesters congregated at the premises of the site, upholding placards and shouting slogans against the Citizenship Act. Raising slogans like "Inquilab Zindabaad" (Long live the revolution) the protesters are also seen urging one another to restore to peace. Despite the government's order to enforce section 144 (which prohibits the assembling of groups in public spheres) for three days across the state, the residents have defied the same to voice their dissent by taking to the streets. According to reports, the police forces relented to the protestor's demonstration and troops of personnel were deployed at the site to ensure that no untoward incident occurs. India sees fresh violence against new citizenship act in Delhi
STORY: India sees fresh violence against new citizenship act in Delhi DATELINE: Dec. 18, 2019 LENGTH: 00:01:28 LOCATION: New Delhi CATEGORY: POLITICS SHOTLIST: 1.various of police gathering in Seelampur area 2.various of the damaged bus and burnt motorbike 3.various of police gathering in Seelampur area STORYLINE Fresh violence was reported from parts of Delhi on Tuesday against the new Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which was passed by the country's Parliament last week, TV media reports said. The Delhi Police personnel used teargas shells to disperse the protesters in East Delhi, particularly in Seelampur area. Ten people were arrested for indulging in arson during violent protests. "Ten people, some of them with criminal records, have been arrested for indulging in arson and setting vehicles on fire during protests," a police official said. "None of those arrested are university students." Police said they were carrying out raids to arrest other people involved in the violence. Business establishments and shops were shut down and Delhi Metro services closed at various places due to the ongoing violence. According to the TV reports, hundreds of enraged protesters resorted to stone-pelting on the police personnel who faced a tough time in controlling the mobs. Several vehicles, including buses, bikes, and others were damaged or set ablaze by the protesters. This was the second occasion when violence was reported against the CAA from Delhi alone. Two days ago, on Sunday several protesters and cops were injured in southeast Delhi, particularly near the Jamia Millia Islamia University, when thousands of protesters clashed with the policemen. The CAA was passed by the country's parliament last week, after which Indian President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the new legislation. The new act aims at granting citizenship to illegal immigrants belonging to six communities -- Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Jainism, Parsi and Christianity -- from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, it has kept out Muslim immigrants from applying for citizenship. Opposition parties and civil society members in India criticized the act as contrary to secular principles enshrined in India's constitution as it excludes Muslims. With this new act, the centre government would grant Indian citizenship to those non-Muslim immigrants who had entered the country illegally until Dec. 31, 2014. People in various northeastern states fear granting of citizenship to immigrants would endanger their ethnic status. Massive protests have rocked three northeastern states, namely Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya over the controversial act, following which authorities imposed curfew and suspended mobile internet services. Violence in New Delhi over citizenship law
Date:DECEMBER 17, 2019 Clashes erupted in New Delhi on Tuesday (December 17) between thousands of protesters and police, the latest violence in a week of opposition to a new law that makes it easier for non-Muslims from neighbouring countries to gain citizenship. Police fired tear gas in the New Seelampur part of the capital to push back protesters swarming to barricades and throwing stones. At least two police were injured, a Reuters witness said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government says the new law will save religious minorities such as Hindus and Christians from persecution in neighbouring Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan by offering them a path to Indian citizenship. But the law does not apply to Muslims, which critics say weakens India's secular foundations. Cars were damaged and roads strewn with rocks while small fires on the road sent smoke into the air. Small groups of youth, some with their faces covered, threw stones and bottles. There have been growing questions about the stance of the government, led by Modi's Hindu-nationalist party, towards India's 172 million Muslims, or 14 percent of the population. The citizenship law follows the revocation of the special status of the Muslim-majority Kashmir region, and a court ruling clearing the way for the construction of a Hindu temple on the site of a mosque razed by Hindu zealots. Protesters in Indian capital Sunday set ablaze several vehicles including three buses during their protest over new citizenship law in country, officials said. 大学の図書館に入り、大学生に暴行した警察官=インド
Students of Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi have accused Indian police of barging into a library and attacking those studying inside. CCTV footage from the reading room of the library allegedly shows the police entering the library on December 15, 2019, and beating up students studying peacefully.
