Hong Kong protesters sing "God Save the Queen" in plea to Britain

Date:SEPTEMBER 15, 2019, FILE Hundreds of Hong Kong protesters singing "God Save the Queen" and waving Union Jack flags rallied outside the British Consulate on Sunday (September 15) demanding that the former colonial power ensures China honours its commitments to the city's freedoms. The Sino-British Joint Declaration, signed in 1984, lays out Hong Kong's future after its return to China in 1997, a "one country, two systems" formula that ensures freedoms not enjoyed on the mainland. "One country, two systems is dead," they shouted in English under the sub-tropical sun, some carrying the colonial flag also bearing the Union Jack. "Free Hong Kong." The Chinese-ruled territory has been rocked by weeks of sometimes violent pro-democracy protests, with demonstrators angry about what they see as creeping interference by Beijing in their city's affairs despite a promise of autonomy. Date:MAY 8, 2019 Crowds greeted Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, as the couple arrived at Leipzig's city centre on Wednesday (May 8). Prince Charles, walked along the crowd smiling and chatted and shook hands with the people gathered around him. One lady welcomed him and added "No to Brexit, yes to Europe", a comment that made the monarch laugh. Prince Charles and Camilla were then seen cheering the crowd from the balcony of Leipzig's city hall, along Saxony Minister President Michael Kretschmer and Leipzig mayor Burkhard Jung. The couple started their four-day visit in Berlin a day earlier visiting the city's landmark, the Brandenburg Gate and being welcomed by Angela Merkel at the German chancellery and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Bellevue Palace. Charles, Camilla continue Germany visit, tour Leipzig church

Date:MAY 8, 2019 Crowds gathered at Leipzig's Thomaskirche on Wednesday (May 8) to welcome Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, as they arrived in Leipzig. The couple walked up to the crowd and chatted with many of those gathered before visiting the historic church, famous for its Thomaner boys choir. Thomaskirche is also the place where musician and composer Johann Sebastian Bach worked as a choirmaster from 1723 until his death in 1750. The couple started their four-day trip in Berlin a day earlier visiting the city's landmark, the Brandenburg Gate and being welcomed by Angela Merkel at the German chancellery and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Bellevue Palace. German fans greet Charles and Camilla at Brandenburg Gate

Date:MAY 7, 2019 Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall charmed well-wishers on Tuesday as the royal pair kicked off their four-day visit in the German capital. Crowds gathered at the German landmark and said that couple were relaxed and chatty with fans who were pleased to be seeing the royal couple so soon after their grandson was born. Charles mouthed a smiling, 'so are we,' to shouts from a well-wisher that they were happy about the new royal baby. Some well-wishers had travelled to Berlin especially to catch a glimpse of the prince and duchess, others got a nice surprise. The Brandenburg Gate, for decades a symbol of Germany's division before the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall is now a reminder of the reunification of East and West Germany a year later. During their stay in Germany, Charles and Camilla will also visit the eastern city of Leipzig and the Bavarian capital Munich. (Caption:2038EV-BRITAIN-ROYALS_GERMANY_BRANDENBURG_GATE)

Prince Charles and Camilla charmed in Old Havana

Date:MARCH 25, 2019 Prince Charles and his wife Camilla strolled through the streets of Old Havana on Monday (March 25), marking the first official trip by the British royal family to Cuba even as Britain's top ally the United States seeks to isolate the island nation. The 70 year-old Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were serenaded by a group of street musicians to the traditional Cuban tune, "Guantanamera." During his three-day historic visit, which is part of a broader Caribbean tour, the 70-year old Prince of Wales is also set to dine with Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, visit community and green energy projects and review a parade of antique British cars. The royal visit, in line with a broader normalisation in relations between the West and Cuba, comes three years after one by former U.S. President Barack Obama then billed as the start of a new chapter for ties between the old Cold War foes Since Donald Trump became U.S. president, however, the United States has reverted to its decades-old strategy of seeking to pressure Cuba to change, including tightening its crippling trade embargo on the island. Prince Charles lays wreath at the Memorial of Cuba's national hero Jose Marti

Date:MARCH 24, 2019 Prince Charles and his wife Camilla arrived in Cuba on Sunday (March 24) as part of a Caribbean tour and lay a flower wreath at the Jose Marti Memorial in Havana's Revolution Square. They are the first British royals to visit the Communist-run nation even as ally the United States seeks to isolate the country. The royal couple were asked by the UK government to add Cuba to their tour of former and current British territories in hopes of boosting commercial relations and political influence. The plans were made before the Trump administration intensified efforts this year to end what it views as Latin America's "troika of tyranny": the socialist governments of Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba. It has warned foreign companies away from doing business with Cuba, continuing its reversal of Trump predecessor Barack Obama's detente with the island. The visit will be welcomed on the island, which has seen a decline in high-profile visits since the likes of Pope Francis, then-U.S. President Obama and the Rolling Stones graced its shores just a few years ago. The royal couple will dine with Cuba's new president, Miguel Diaz-Canel, who succeeded Raul Castro a year ago. They first met last November on Prince Charles' 70th birthday, when the Cuban president was visiting London. There are no plans for Charles to meet Raul Castro, who remains head of the Communist Party, though that could change, according to Britain's embassy. The meeting inside the private Lindo Wing saw the first, second and now third in line to the British throne all in the same room: Prince Charles, Prince William and the as yet unnamed baby prince. Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, visited the hospital a couple of hours after the baby's other grandparents, Carole and Michael Middleton, Catherine's parents, met the youngest royal. 【オランダ王室】ベアトリクス女王退位晩餐会に各国王室メンバー到着

NETHERLANDS: International guests arrive for Dutch royal banquet to mark Queen Beatrix's abdication A stream of royals, international dignitaries and Dutch politicians arrived on Monday evening (April 29) in Amsterdam for a banquet to mark Beatrix's last evening as queen of the Netherlands. The banquet took place in Amsterdam's world famous newly renovated Rijksmuseum. Wearing a light purple gown, Queen Beatrix was flanked by her son, future king Willem-Alexander and his wife Princess Maxima in a bright red gown. Tomorrow, on April 30, at 0800 GMT Beatrix will sign an instrument of abdication, whereupon Willem-Alexander immediately becomes King and his wife Maxima, a popular former investment banker from Argentina, becomes Queen. The three were followed by a mix of royals, including British Prince Charles, Swedish Crown Princess Viktoria and Spanish Crown Prince Filipe. Japanese Crown Prince Naruhito also attended the banquet, but his wife Crown Princess Masako had to cancel at the last minute. Former United Nations General Secretary Kofi Annan and EU politicians Herman Van Rompuy and Jose Manuel Barroso were also among the guests. After tomorrow's abdication ceremony, the new King and Queen and the Princess Beatrix will appear on the palace balcony to wave and address crowds of about 20,000 in Dam Square. They will then head from the palace, to the 600-year-old Nieuwe Kerk, or New Church, next door where the new King will swear an oath to uphold the Dutch constitution before the assembled lawmakers. The partying will continue through the evening with a water pageant along the Ij, Amsterdam's historic waterfront.

    英エリザベス女王即位60周年祝賀 バルコニーの王室一家

As queen turns 90, report values British monarchy at $84 billion Date:APRIL 21, 2016, SEPTEMBER 8, 2015, JUNE 5, 2012, MARCH 1, 2012 The value of the British monarchy stands at around $84 billion, according to a report released on Thursday (April 22) as Queen Elizabeth marks her 90th birthday. Consultancy Brand Finance estimated the figure of 58.4 billion pounds by adding 21 billion pounds of tangible assets like the Royal Collection treasure trove, private estates and the Crown Estate to 37.4 billion pounds of intangible assets, namely the monarchy's long term contribution to the economy. It said the royal family contributes more than 1 billion pounds to the British economy, adding value to areas such as tourism and business. "It's like a giant PR campaign for the UK," Brand Finance Chief Executive David Haigh told Reuters. Brand Finance calculated the contributions by netting off security, palace maintenance and the Sovereign Grant -- the queen's public income -- against income sources including "uplift to tourism, the price premium commanded by brands with royal warrants and the surplus generated by the Crown Estate". Estimates of the British monarchy's wealth are complicated as some assets are privately owned and others like the Crown Estate are owned by the queen on behalf of the nation. Anti-royalists have provided their own figures and dispute claims the royal family boosts tourism. Last year, campaign group Republic published a report saying "each 'working royal' costs the taxpayer an average of 18.5 million pounds, making them the most expensive public officials in the country". UNITED KINGDOM/FILE: Britain's monarchy is enjoying record popularity, likely to be boosted further with Prince George's christening On Wednesday (October 23) the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will christen their three-month-old son, Prince George in a private ceremony at St James's Palace. It's a break with royal tradition to not use the music room at Buckingham Palace for high-ranking christenings. Prince William and his wife Catherine's office has stressed the christening is a low-key, intimate affair. In typical fashion, William is doing things his own way. The young couple are credited with bringing a breath of fresh air to the ancient institution of the British monarchy. The royal family's popularity is at an all time high, with the public image having undergone a dramatic change in recent years. "I think William and Kate are modern people living in modern times with very up to date ideas about how they want to live their lives and while William is very mindful of history and what the family traditions are, and he is certainly not casting them aside, but I think he has indicated, in this as much as anything else that he has done, that he wants to do this his way," said royal author and Prince William biographer, Penny Junor. In a Guardian/ICM poll last year 69 percent of people surveyed said Britain would be worse off without the royal family, just 22 percent said the country would be better off. Queen Elizabeth's family and all the pomp and ceremony that go with it attracts huge numbers of tourists. At the Changing of the Guards ceremony outside Buckingham Palace, more than a thousand tourists throng outside the palace for the colourful event which takes place every other day. Tourists said the upcoming christening and the image of William, Kate and the new baby, have helped boost the popularity of the royals overseas. "With a baby they become a family and as a family they represent that all the British people, also are part of a family," said Simran Naat, a visitor from India. "Royal couple is very attractive and we look forward to seeing the whole concept of the royal family," said Harpreet Kaur, another tourist from India. Swedish tourist Michael Erhardsson said William and Kate were very "popular" in his homeland. And Irene Liu, on holiday from Beijing, said the christening was making news in China. "We heard the news from the China Daily and yeah, we think that the new generation will give us a better world and future," she said. William and Kate are just as popular at home. Londoner Sarah Watkins said "They are quite nice role models for the younger generation and the baby being christened is great." For Bill Heath, also a Londoner, the royal family gives him a pride he doesn't feel about Britain's government. "People don't have much faith in politicians anymore. Everybody needs to look up to somebody and personally I look to the Queen and the royal family for dignity, honesty and general good bearance," he said. Prince William now has to balance the need for his young family to be seen in public, with the fierce desire he has to protect their privacy. "He understands that it is really important for the public to take an interest in George and to see him, because if the public is no longer interested in him or the royal family, then the royal family might as well pack up their tents and go home," said Junor. After the very public and acrimonious split between William's parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, the second-in-line to the throne hopes to manage the media much better than his parents did. He has an army of professionals around him to make sure to strike the balance right. "He saw what happened to his own parents marriage, to their lives. They were all but wrecked by the intrusion of the media - that he will not allow to happen to George," Junor said. The christening will be the first time in over 100 years that four generations of royals are photographed together, with a picture of Queen Elizabeth, her son and heir Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince George to be released after the event. But what will the monarchy look like in the predicted 60 years time before Prince George inherits the throne? Junor said it's hard to know what the world will be like then, but she believes the royal family will still hold an important place in British life. "It will be still an institution that cements the country together, that provides leadership, not hard power leadership, but kind of moral leadership, community leadership, charitable leadership," she said. (ends) (Caption:UNITED KINGDOM/FILE: Britain's monarchy is enjoying record popularity, likely to be boosted further with Prince George's christening)

    英チャールズ皇太子 王子二人とスキーリゾートで会見

SWITZERLAND: GRUMPY PRINCE CHARLES CALLS MEDIA "BLOODY PEOPLE". Date:MARCH 31, 2005 Grumpy Prince Charles calls media "bloody people". For a man about to marry the love of his life, Britain's Prince Charles sounded distinctly grumpy on Thursday (March 31) in the elegant Swiss ski resort of Klosters. Mumbling under his breath at a photocall with sons William and Harry, the heir to the throne was caught on the assembled microphones saying: "I hate doing this." Confronted by a phalanx of reporters and photographers, he whispered "Bloody people!" Prince William was the most chatty of the three. He was first to respond when the trio were asked about the wedding, saying he was "very happy, very pleased", adding: "It will be a good day." He was asked about being a witness at the wedding. He said he was looking forward to it, adding: "Very much so. As long as I don't lose the rings - that's the one responsibility." William and Harry were asked if they had staged a stag do for their 56-year-old father. Harry said, laughing: "It's been and done." William added: "You've missed that. It was good fun." The royal party traditionally offers a carefully stage-managed photocall on the slopes in return for being left alone when they go skiing in Klosters every spring. This year, however, the unwritten agreement has already broken down, with paparazzi snapping William together with his girlfriend Kate Middleton. Asked if there was likely to be a second royal wedding soon, the Prince dismissed the idea and said: "No." William was also asked about how he and Kate were coping with the media attention. "I haven't seen any of it. I'm just gagging to be on the slopes - simple as that," he said. The Klosters holiday sparked trouble last year when William and Kate were first pictured together on the slopes. Charles's marriage next week to his longtime lover Camilla Parker Bowles has been dogged by setbacks. The venue had to be switched from Windsor Castle to the local town hall in a mix-up over marriage licences, Queen Elizabeth refused to attend her son's wedding and constitutional experts are even questioning the legality of a civil ceremony. EUROPE - UK Royal Wedding

The heir to the British throne, Prince Charles, and his companion Camilla Parker Bowles were married in the Guildhall of the British town of Windsor in April, capping a decades-long romance that survived scandal and turmoil through the prince's first marriage to Princess Diana. To the cheers of an estimated 15-thousand well-wishers and a few scattered boos, the couple was driven to Windsor Castle after the ceremony in a vintage Rolls Royce as a jazz band played Congratulations." Nearly eight years after Diana's death, some have bridled at accepting Parker Bowles as a future queen, seeing her relationship with Charles as the reason his first marriage fell apart. The wedding represents a break in tradition for the fifty-something divorcees who were getting married in a civil ceremony that Queen Elizabeth II was not attending, reportedly because of her religious views. Camilla will technically be the Princess of Wales -- a title she wishes to avoid using, in deference to memories of Diana. She is to be known, instead, as the Duchess of Cornwall. When Charles takes the throne, she legally will be queen, but wishes to be known as Princess Consort -- a bow to opinion polls that show 70 percent of the population opposed to a Queen Camilla. ; ; ; 447041 ; UK Pool ; Windsor, UK - 9 April 2005 ; Close up of girl with Union Jack glasses ; Charles and Camilla emerge after ceremony and wave to crowds, walking towards car ; ; 447055 ; AP Television News ; Windsor - 9 April 2005 ; Crowd watching, sign saying "God save the Queen" "

SWITZERLAND/ UNITED KINGDOM: BRITAIN'S PRINCE CHARLES AND SON PRINCE HARRY BEGIN THEIR SKIING HOLIDAY IN KLOSTERS/ ROYAL MINT LAUNCH OFFICIAL COIN TO COMMEMORATE THE LIFE OF DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES Date:JANUARY 4-5, 1999 Daredevil Prince Harry has rivalled his father as the two Royals put on a show of ski-jumping at Klosters in Switzerland. Prince Charles and Prince Harry began their skiing holiday in Klosters, Switzerland on Tuesday (January 5), looking relaxed, close to one another, and seeming at ease with the media. The trip inspired some controversy after Prince William reportedly refused to go with his father and younger brother. But British newspapers merely compared him to other teenagers not wishing to go on holiday with their parents. Prince Charles showed off his skiing ability to photographers before laughing and joking with the media. Prince Harry, not to be outdone, then showed he can compete with his father when it comes to skiing, ramping and jumping in the air. In London an official coin to commemorate the life of Diana, Princess of Wales has been launched. The commemorative five pound coin is the first of four official memorials to be announced by the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Commmittee. Proceeds from the sale of the coins, 10 million of which will be printed this year, are to go towards funding future memorials. Chief Executive of the Royal Mint, David Holmes said he believed it was a "wonderful memorial". "We have got a coin with her portrait, a very simple tasteful portrait. It's issued in a pack which commemorates her life and work and I think it takes its place as commemorative coins often do for very famous people and famous anniversaries as part of the way of remembering someone very special." He said the idea for the coin came from the public after people were canvassed on what would be appropriate memorials for the Princess. The "obverse" or head side of the coin features the Queen's head which appears on all United Kingdom coins minted from January 1998 and is the work of the sculptor, Ian Rank Broadley. The Diana portrait was done by David Cornell. Natural Sound Princes William and Harry joined their father outside Kensington Palace on Friday, their first public appearance in London since the death of their mother, Princess Diana. Sobbing mourners handed the boys flowers and cried out their love for both Diana and the family. Their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, spoke with mourners outside Buckingham Palace on Friday afternoon, just hours before her unusual live T-V address to the nation. It was a scene of intense emotion in London on Friday. Prince Charles and his sons, William and Harry, flew into the capital to talk to the crowds at Kensington Palace, Princess Diana's former residence. The boys accepted flowers with shy smiles, shook hands and thanked people for the outpouring of support. "We love you," cried some of the crowd. Just down the road, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip arrived at Buckingham Palace, where they found a large crowd and heaps of flowers in memory of Princess Diana. The Queen - wearing black - had just arrived in London from Scotland. For the first time, the Queen had ordered that Britain's national flag replace the monarch's personal flag, the blue, red and gold Royal Standard - seen here being raised on her arrival - over the Palace on Saturday. It will fly at half-mast all day, another first. Stepping from her limousine, she spoke with some of the thousands who had gathered to offer condolences, shaking hands and smiling bravely as she accepted their flowers. The Royal Family was strongly criticised earlier this week for not joining in the mourning that had swept the country after Sunday's death of Princess Diana. On Friday, however, they laid that criticism to rest during an emotional homecoming. From Buckingham Palace, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh walked to St. James's Palace, where Diana's coffin lay inside the Chapel Royal. Outside St. James's, hundreds of people clutching cameras and flowers waited to greet their Queen. After speaking with some of the crowds, the Queen and Prince Philip went into the Chapel Royal to view the Princess's body.

    英皇太子親子の休暇公開 ダイアナ元妃交際話の注目逸らす狙いか スコットランド (1997年8月16日)

Natural Sound Britain's Prince of Wales broke off his traditional Scottish summer holiday for the second time this week to pose with his sons, Princes William and Harry beside a waterfall. Aides deny it was an attempt to deflect attention from the media frenzy over his ex-wife, Princess Diana's romance with millionaire Egyptian playboy Dodi Al Fayed. They say he just wanted to allow the media to get their photos, before leaving the family alone for the remainder of their holiday. Prince Charles and his sons, Princes William and Harry appeared at the top of a waterfall for the second photocall of the week. It has been the first time Charles has appeared for a formal photocall at Balmoral since he and Diana did so shortly after their marriage in 1981. The prince's press secretary declared the experiment a success, but stressed that Charles was not embarking "on a charm offensive". She said the intention of the photo call was to ensure that Charles and his two sons could enjoy a holiday together in privacy. Charles hopes that by agreeing to the two photocalls, he could persuade photographers to leave the Royal party alone for the rest of their break, rather than try to follow their every move across the vast Balmoral estate. The photocall comes amidst increased speculation about the relationship Charles's ex- wife, Diana Princess of Wales is having with Dodi Al Fayed - the multi-millionaire son of the Egyptian owner of England's most famous department store, Harrods.

BRITAIN-ROYALS/PRIVACY 'Hot' royals Will and Kate face privacy struggle as interest in growing family intensifies The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - who are considered celebrities as much as royals - face an almost unparalleled level of media scrutiny with global interest in the couple unsated by their regular royal engagements. William is known to value his privacy, and he and his wife Kate hope to give their their young son George and his hotly anticipated sibling - due at the end of April - a "normal" life and shield them from media intrusion. William's relationship with the press has been shaped by what happened to his mother Princess Diana, said royal historian Hugo Vickers. Diana was hounded by the paparazzi and died in a car crash in Paris in 1997. "I think Prince William has a great number of reasons for disliking the media in general, most particularly when you think what they did to his mother, the Princess of Wales, and I think he's always had, and I completely understand that, you know, a very strong awareness of what they are capable of doing," he said. Previous generations of young royals, like William's father Prince Charles, were able to grow up out of the glare of the media spotlight. And even when William and his younger brother Harry were children Britain's press agreed not to intrude, with little snooping into their early years apart from special occasions such as their first day at school. But the expansion of the modern media and a never-ending news cycle mean there is now an almost insatiable demand for images of the prominent royals. "Probably the biggest difficulty the royal family has in fulfilling its role these days is the fact that there is a sort of 24/7 global media hungry for news in a way that wasn't when for example Prince Charles was growing up. That wasn't the case at all, I mean they were left in peace and people were much more deferential," said Vickers. The British media is still reeling from recent phone hacking scandals and an inquiry into press regulation. The chastened industry does not currently have the appetite to defy the royal family wishes and print unsanctioned photographs. There now exists an uneasy truce between the British newspapers and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, but this does not apply in the rest of the world. In 2012 when French magazine Closer printed grainy topless photos of Kate on holiday in France, William was furious. More recently two paparazzi photographers were reported to have pursued Prince George and his nanny in a London park. While William has not been afraid to take legal action against those who he considers to have breached his family's privacy, some say ultimately he can't win. "When photographs of Kate have emerged that he doesn't approve of he is very protective of his family and you can see he very much doesn't like not to be able to control a scenario. He doesn't shrug it off. He very much fights for his family and I think that is commendable but obviously a problem for him because he can't control the press I mean it's impossible," said royal author Claudia Joseph, whose latest book on the couple is 'William and Kate's Britain'. As royal photographer for Britain's leading tabloid newspaper 'The Sun' Arthur Edwards has spent more than three decades photographing the royal family. He said the relationship between the press and William could be better. "It's not great, it's not great. He was determined to stop his wife and child being tormented by paparazzi. It hasn't quite worked but it's almost worked where there's not pictures published here the disadvantage of that is there are pictures taken and they're appearing in France and America and Germany and so the Germans, the Americans and the French all know what George looks like but we don't," said Edwards. He said the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's second baby could provide an ideal opportunity for William to easily give the media what they want and hopes he will use the hospital steps for an endearing photo moment. "We've got this opportunity coming up when Catherine goes into hospital obviously. If it's anything like when Princess Diana went in to have Harry the first visitor was the Prince of Wales with William walking up the step now if we can get that going in and out that would be nice for a start," he added. "They are the hottest couple in the world now and they've got little George who one day will be a king, King George and, but he is being very well protected. And I can see why William's doing that, I understand why but I think you know as a very privileged member of the royal family he should bear in mind that the public, the great British public would like to see more pictures," said Edwards. But Joseph said William and Kate are likely to continue to try and keep their children behind-the-scenes as they go about their royal duties. "We will meet him or her obviously at staged photo-calls, the christening, first birthday, that type of event but on the other hand most of the time they will keep the children out of the public eye," said Joseph. So sanctioned scenes like when young George joined his parents on an official engagement at a Sydney zoo look set to remain a rarity as William and Kate continue the difficult task of maintaining a private family life while at the same time fulfilling their role as the world's most fascinating royal couple. British royal correspondent reacts to Prince Harry statement Date:NOVEMBER 8, 2016, FILE Britain's Prince Harry issued a rare statement on Tuesday (November 9) criticizing the media for intruding into the private life of his American girlfriend, saying the press had subjected her to "a wave of abuse and harassment". British newspapers have been running daily stories about Meghan Markle since it emerged at the end of October that the 35-year-old actress had been "secretly" dating the prince, 32, the grandson of Queen Elizabeth, for several months. Royal correspondent at Britain's Daily Express newspaper, Richard Palmer said he was very surprised Kensington Palace confirmed the new relationship in this way, as officials had given no warning they were about to acknowledge it. "On this occasion we were getting no help whatsoever from the Kensington Palace press team at all. So to go from that to this seems a huge leap. And the other thing is, as colleagues in the newsroom upstairs have just been saying to me, they are astonished that the palace would take this step at such an early stage in the relationship," he said. The statement from his communications secretary, which officially confirmed Harry and Markle's relationship for the first time, contained an unusually strong condemnation of the press. Palmer thinks Kensington Palace have been a bit heavy-handed in their criticism of the press, which he says are just doing what any good journalist should be doing. "The palace wasn't answering any questions about this relationship at all nor were her publicity people in the States or in Canada, so the natural thing was for journalists to go to her house, stand outside, try to wait for her to come out and ask questions about it. That to me seems perfectly legitimate," said Palmer, who was keen to state journalists shouldn't break laws in pursuit of a royal romance story. "Obviously if people start following in cars, if they start trying to get into the house, break in or whatever, then obviously that is breaking the law and there is no argument about that," he said. The statement said royal aides had fought nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories from appearing in papers. It also included a litany of alleged offences by reporters. The prince understood he enjoyed a privileged life but was worried about Markle's safety and was "deeply disappointed" he could not protect her, the statement said. Palmer said the problem is more with social media and the fact that anyone armed with a phone can take photos or video. "I think this was one of the big problems for his last serious girlfriend, Cressida Bonas, that she just felt wherever she went there was always somebody sticking a phone in her face trying to take a photo or take film of her and nine times out of ten that wasn't the journalists that was members of the public and in a way because of social media everybody is a journalist now," he said. Palmer added that he thinks it a "mistake" for the palace to have issued the statement, as it's propelled the story into headline news. But members of the public could understand Harry's frustration, even though they didn't see how he could stop invasions of Markle's privacy. "I'm afraid it's modern life, isn't it" said one woman outside Buckingham Palace. "Now that we've gone that far into social media it's going to happen," said her friend. Harry, William and William's wife Kate are a staple of the front pages of British newspapers and gossip magazines, which pore over every aspect of their lives. All three had their phones hacked by employees of the now-defunct News of the World tabloid a decade ago. William has criticized intrusions into Kate's life before they were married and attempts to take unsolicited pictures of his young children, George and Charlotte. UNITED KINGDOM: What's the future for Britain's monarchy as birth of royal baby looms? Britain's Queen Elizabeth was "delighted" at the news the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were expecting a baby, which will become third in line to the throne and no wonder she was pleased as this royal baby will secure the House of Windsor's bloodline for more generations to come. Prince Charles, the Queen's first-born, will become the next monarch, followed by Prince William. And now his and his wife Catherine's baby will follow in that line. "The birth of another generation of the Royal House of Windsor, in direct line of succession to the throne, is what the hereditary monarchy is all about," said royal historian Hugo Vickers. "And it is a wonderful thing that the Queen and Prince Philip in their reign, even after a reign of 61 years will see the eventual heir and that's what continuity is all about and that is the great advantage of the strange but very effective system that we have of constitutional monarchy," he said. Recently centuries of British royal discrimination came to an end when in October 2011 Commonwealth leaders agreed to drop rules that give sons precedence as heir to the throne. Queen Elizabeth only became monarch because her parents, King George VI and his Queen Elizabeth, did not have any sons. The constitutional change in British and Commonwealth law means that if William and Kate have a baby girl, she will become a future queen even if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge go on to have a baby boy. Westminster politicians hailed the move as bringing Britain into line with modern thinking and providing equality, but royal author Charles Mosley, says the very notion of succession is inherently unequal. "I don't see that you are going to get more equality by replacing male superiority over female superiority with age superiority. Why should the eldest have a special right to anything as opposed to the youngest or the middle or if there are many children, the fourth or fifth child? It's absurd. And of course that's the point about monarchy, we can't all be monarchs," he said. "It is not necessarily going to usher in a better kind of sovereign," he added. 87-year-old Queen Elizabeth has always said she will never abdicate. Her mother, the Queen Mum, died at the age of 101, and the Queen is in good health so it could be a long time yet before the 64-year-old Prince Charles takes up the job he was born to do. He is the longest-waiting successor after overtaking Queen Victoria's son Edward VII, his great-great grandfather, in 2008. Prince Charles has expressed concerns that he will "snuff it" before he does all that he wants to do. Last year, when the Queen and royal family celebrated her Diamond Jubilee, her approval rating was 48 percent according to an Ipsos Mori poll. William was voted the most popular royal with a 62 percent approval rating, the highest since the surveys began in 1984. Two previous polls found that people believe William would make a better king and that Charles should stand aside. William and Kate are certainly the modern face of the royal family and help make the House of Windsor appear less stuffy. But it's hard to predict what the royal family will look like under Prince William when he eventually becomes king, says Vickers. "People keep asking me "What sort of a monarchy will it be under them?' and the answer is we simply don't know, it's likely to be slightly less formal I would think, but each generation brings to it something of their own style, their own upbringing, their own mood of the times and so forth, which is as it should be, that is again one of the advantages of a hereditary monarchy is that is has a sort of natural rejuvenation," he said. The Duchess of Cambridge is due to give birth in the middle of July. Buckingham Palace has said the couple do not know whether they are expecting a future king or queen. チャールズ皇太子誕生

BACKGROUND FEATURE: Britain's Queen Elizabeth II prepares to celebrate her 80th birthbay Britain's Queen Elizabeth II will turn 80 on April 21, 2006. The Queen celebrates her 80th birthday on her actual birthday on April 21, as well as on her 'official birthday' on June 17. The 'official birthday' follows a long tradition started by monarchs whose birthdays fell in the winter months, making outdoors celebrations and parades difficult due to bad weather. The official birthday was thus created for practical reasons, and the Queen celebrates hers either the first, second or the third Saturday in June. The Queen will spend her actual birthday at Windsor Castle and the official birthday will be marked by the annual Trooping the Colour. Various events have been planned to celebrate the monarch's 80th birthday, including a dinner party for Buckingham Palace staff, a reception for a 100 people sharing her actual birthday and a children's party in June. In addition, courtiers have compiled a list of 80 offbeat and quirky facts on the Queen to mark the birthday. The 80 facts can be viewed on www.royal.gov.uk. Britain's 63rd monarch and the longest reigning British sovereign this century, Queen Elizabeth II was born in a fashionable part of London in the 'Roaring Twenties' to the then Duke and Duchess of York. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was expected to play merely a supporting role in the monarchy. At the time of her birth on April 21, 1926, her uncle was the Prince of Wales and heir apparent to George V and her father was only second in line to the throne. However, in 1936 Edward VIII as her uncle had become, plunged the monarchy into crisis, announcing he was renouncing the throne to marry twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. The crown passed to his brother, Elizabeth's father, who became George VI, and Princess Elizabeth became heir presumptive on the assumption that her father would have no sons to take precedence over her. Princess Elizabeth moved with her parents and sister Margaret to Buckingham Palace to serve her apprenticeship in statecraft, growing up under strict parental guidance. Her adolescence was overshadowed by World War II, which she and her sister largely spent in the relative safety of Windsor Castle, west of London, retreating during air-raids to the cellars where the Crown Jewels were stored. At the age of 16 she signed on the local labour exchange, or jobs office, and at her own request she later joined the women's army, the Auxiliary Territorial Service. After the end of the war, Elizabeth made her first official overseas visit to South Africa with her family in 1947. While there, she celebrated her 21st birthday and marked the occasion with a broadcast address dedicating herself to the service of the Commonwealth. Shortly after the Royal Family's return from South Africa, Princess Elizabeth's engagement to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, son of Prince Andrew of Greece and great-great-grandson of Britain's Queen Victoria was announced. Their wedding took place in Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947. Prince Charles was born in 1948, Princess Anne in 1950, Prince Andrew in 1960 and Prince Edward in 1964. In 1952, while on a visit to Kenya the news of her father's death reached Elizabeth and she returned to London to be formally welcomed to her new role by then prime minister Winston Churchill. Her coronation at the age of 27 took place in Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953. The ceremony, attended by international politicians and civic and business leaders, was transmitted by television and radio broadcasts throughout the world. In 1969, Princes Charles was invested as Prince of Wales at a ceremony in the 700-year-old Caernarvon Castle. During the ceremony the Prince, following ancient tradition, pledged his loyalty to the Queen before being vested with the signs of his Office. In 1981 Prince Charles, at the age of 32, married Lady Diana Spencer in St Paul's Cathedral, watched by an estimated world-wide television audience of 700-million people. Princess Diana gave birth to the couple's first son, William, in June 1982. Second in line to the throne, William was christened on the 82nd birthday of his great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Despite her 80 years, the Queen shows no sign of slowing down. She has made it clear that she would not abdicate in favour of Prince Charles. In her own words she sees her role as a "job for life". Lord St John of Fawsley, an ardent Royalist who has met the Queen many times and is a constitutional expert, says the Queen has no plans to retire. "Oh my heavens, the Queen has no intention of abdicating. And when you next meet her, I would advice you not to raise the subject otherwise you'll end up in the Tower," he told Reuters jokingly. During her reign, the Queen has broken new ground for the British monarchy during many of her overseas visits. In 1975 she was the first British monarch to visit the colony of Hong Kong. From Hong Kong she travelled to Japan, again a first for the British monarchy. The following year she was present at the United States bicentennial celebrations. In 1984 the Queen and Prince Philip visited Jordan as guests of King Hussein. She became the first British monarch to walk on the Great Wall of China when she visited the country in 1986. During her six-day stay she also met Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping. The Queen has also acted as host to many state leaders visiting Britain. In July 1991 leaders of the Group of Seven nations and European Community officials attended a banquet at Buckingham Palace which was followed by a spectacular fireworks and laser display. As titular head of the Commonwealth of Britain and its former colonies, the Queen regularly attends the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Addressing Commonwealth leaders at a dinner aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia at the start of the 1993 meeting in Cyprus she said she would "not be betting" on how many Commonwealth countries would retain her or her successor as their Head of State 40 years from now. The Queen's role as Head of State to 16 Commonwealth nations was called in question by a campaign by former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating to turn his country into a republic within the Commonwealth. Keating caused a stir in 1992 when during a royal visit he broke protocol by putting his arm around the Queen as he introduced her to the guests, and later in a welcoming speech commented that Australia was independent and its future lay with Asia. During her reign the Queen has stripped away some of the fusty ritual of the imperial court and started to open up the monarchy to the curious masses. Her personal standing has remained high in spite of the strong criticism attracted by younger members of the royal family. A quick poll outside Buckingham Palace confirmed the positive image the Queen possesses by both those for and against the royalty. "Yes, I think she's done a very good job, I must say. Definitely. I admire her quite a lot," Basil Hoare said. "I think she's due to retire. She's been committed and I appreciate that but I'm not a great fan of the monarchy to be honest. But at least I can tell that she's been committed to the country but I think probably time to retire," said Richard Bendrey. Despite her public role, Elizabeth, the person, has remained a mystery to most. The Queen is notorious for being private about her personal life, and being described closer to her dogs and horses than people. "One of the reasons we don't know much about her own thoughts is she's extremely prudent. She doesn't make statements. She doesn't talk to friends in private. These so-called friends who suddenly appear the next minute in the newspapers, having sold their story to them. She talks, principally, privately, to her dogs and to her horses," explained Lord St John of Fawsley. The Queen has owned more than 30 corgis in her reign, starting with Susan who was an 18th birthday present in 1944. Her first pony, Peggy, was given to her by her grandfather King George V when she was four years old. Britain's Prince Charles turns 71 - file Date:FILE Britain's Prince Charles was born at Buckingham Palace on November 14, 1948, in the 12th year of the reign of his grandfather, King George VI. The first child of then Princess Elizabeth and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, he was christened 'Charles Philip Arthur George'. When King George died in 1952, Princess Elizabeth acceded to the throne and Charles became heir apparent at the age of three. In 1957 he began his education at Cheam Preparatory School just outside London, a boarding school that his father, now Prince Philip, had attended. Charles's interest in the sea was nurtured from an early age, and in 1959 he accompanied the Queen on an inspection of the aircraft-carrier 'HMS Eagle' which was anchored off Weymouth. In 1962 he continued his education at Gordonstoun school in a remote area of the Scottish Highlands, again following in Prince Philip's footsteps. Charles hated the stern regime and in his letters complained of being bullied by his schoolmates. In 1967 he went on to Cambridge University where he read archaeology and anthropology during his first year, later switching to history. He graduated in 1970 with an undistinguished degree. At the age of 20, in July 1969, he was invested as the 21st Prince of Wales at a ceremony attended by some 4,000 guests within the ancient walls of Caernarvon Castle. The colourful and impressive ceremony was televised to a world-wide audience estimated at 5 million. Continuing a family tradition, Charles took up military and officer training which culminated five years later with the command of 'HMS Bronington' a coastal minesweeper based in Scotland. In December 1976 he left the military to concentrate on his royal duties. Following years of speculation about his marriage plans, Buckingham Palace finally announced Charles's engagement to Lady Diana Spencer in February 1981. The 32-year-old prince captured a blushing bride in the 20-year-old Diana and crowned their affair with a dazzling wedding ceremony at St Paul's Cathedral six months later. Diana seemed the perfect choice as a royal wife; she was pretty, well-bred and apparently deferential to her husband. Their marriage appeared happy and the line of succession to the throne was assured with the birth of Prince William in June 1982. A second son, Prince Harry, was born in September 1984. However, by the end of the 1980's media speculation about Charles and Diana's relationship had intensified as the couple led increasingly separate lives. Diana was reported to have attempted suicide to attract her husband's attention and had tantrums over his attachment to Camilla Parker Bowles. In the eyes of the public Charles appeared wooden and he failed to win popular affection or inspire the devotion enjoyed by his glamourous wife. In December 1992 Prime Minister John Major announced the formal separation of the royal couple in parliament. The statement, prepared by Buckingham Palace, said the arrangement was entirely amicable and that the line of succession to the throne would not be affected, signalling Charles could still accede to the throne. After the separation, reports emerged that the union had been a disaster from the start and an authorised biography of the prince published in October 1994 implied that Charles was a reluctant bridegroom who was forced into a loveless marriage with Diana by a domineering father. Their formal divorce in August 1996 left Charles looking an unlikely sovereign and royal-watchers openly questioned whether he would ever by crowned. A year after the divorce Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris, along with her lover Dodi Al-Fayed and their driver Henri Paul. Charles, William and Harry were spending their summer holiday in Scotland with the Queen and Prince Philip when the news was broken to them. A shocked nation mourned Diana's passing. Vast seas of floral tributes were left outside London's palaces and millions lined the streets to watch in silence as her funeral cortege passed by at a slow walking pace. In March 2002 crowds again lined London's streets, this time to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. A grieving Charles walked behind his grandmother's coffin as the funeral cortege made its solemn way to Westminster Abbey. Charles' dislike of the media was accidentally revealed at a photo opportunity with his sons during a skiing holiday in March 2005. The grumpy prince was caught on the assembled microphones muttering "Bloody people, I can't bear them" just days before his marriage to his long-time lover Camilla Parker Bowles. After Diana's death Charles and Camilla's relationship became more public and years of astutely managed appearances gradually led to her being accepted as his partner. The heir to the throne and the newly titled Duchess of Cornwall were married in April 2005 in a humble town hall civil ceremony which was followed by a religious service of blessing in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, attended by the royal family and 800 guests. Following in their father's footsteps, both Prince William and Prince Harry underwent military training after completing their education. To prepare for his future role as head of the armed forces Prince William spent three years training with the army, airforce and navy after leaving university. Prince Charles presented him with his pilot's "wings" in April 2008 when he completed four-month's training with the Royal Air Force. By his 60th birthday, in November 2008, Charles' approval rating had improved as he gradually won back public sympathy and was seen as a thoughtful and caring single parent. A portrait released to mark his birthday showed a relaxed looking heir to the throne wearing the uniform of Regimental Colonel of the Welsh Guards, a post conferred on him in 1975. Prince Charles made his first visit to troops on the front line in Afghanistan, in March 2010, as British troops were involved in their biggest offensive of the thirteen-year war. His two-day visit included meetings with local leaders, held seated cross-legged on a cushion, and an introduction to mine-detecting. The royal family's approval rating was further boosted by the marriage of Prince William to long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton in April 2011, and the arrival of their first child in July 2013. Charles' first grandson was christened George Alexander Louis in a small private ceremony in St James' Palace attended by close family members and seven godparents. Prince Charles, along with other members of the royal family, began undertaking more official duties after Queen Elizabeth scaled back her workload following a bout of ill-health in early 2013. Accompanied by the Duchess of Cornwall, he took part in the State Opening of Parliament in May 2013, the first time he had attended the annual event since 1996. He and the Duchess sat on the Queen's right during the ceremony which marks the formal start of the parliamentary year. In November 2013 Prince Charles represented the monarch at the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka and in February 2014 a four-day tour of Gulf States included visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE and Bahrain. While in Riyadh the prince donned traditional Arabic robes and took part in the Ardha, a sword dance celebrating Saudi Arabia's warrior tradition. Charles was accompanied by Prince William and Prince Harry when he attended an international conference in London in February 2014, aimed at reducing the demand for illegal wildlife products and strengthening law enforcement. In advance of the conference he and Prince William released a 9-minute video plea urging people around the world to "Unite for Wildlife" and support efforts to stop the illegal wildlife trade. In April 2014, President Michael Higgins became the first Irish head of state to make a state visit to Britain, crowning the big improvement in historically fraught relations between Dublin and its former colonial master. The president was met on arrival by Prince Charles who escorted him to Windsor Castle where he received a ceremonial welcome from the Queen and Prince Philip. The 70th anniversary of the World War Two D-Day landings in Normandy was marked in June. Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall attended a remembrance service held in Bayeux cathedral and took part in the inauguration of a new cathedral bell named after St Therese Benedicte. Born Edith Stein, she was a German-Jewish philosopher who was arrested by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz concentration camp where she died in 1942. Following the announcement of the death of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia on January 23, 2015, Prince Charles and British Prime Minister David Cameron flew to Riyadh to pay their respects, joining world leaders and royalty in the reception hall of the royal court as they waited to offer their condolences to the new monarch, King Salman. In May 2018, Prince Harry married U.S. actress Meghan Markle, a star of the TV drama "Suits". Prince Charles walked her down the aisle at the wedding in Windsor after her own father had to pull out because of ill health. U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump had tea with the Prince of Wales and The Duchess Cornwall at Clarence House in June. Prince Charles and his wife Camilla welcomed the Trumps to their residence in London as part of the full royal spectacle of a British state visit. As Queen Elizabeth approaches her tenth decade and Prince Charles assumes more of the duties of monarchy, the role of king no longer remains a distant prospect for the oldest Prince of Wales and longest serving heir to the throne in British history.
