The new governor of the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk said on Tuesday that the region is "united in its wish" to maintain its territorial integrity.
Serhiy Taruta, the country's 16th-richest man, was recently named governor of Donetsk, a coal-mining region that borders Russia.
The oligarch, who is seen as pro-European, briefed the media on Tuesday after a meeting of local officials.
"I'm absolutely sure that Donbas (name for the region in eastern Ukraine) is united in its wish to maintain its integrity," he said.
"This is not just my opinion, but the opinion of most of the citizens of Donbas, and as the authority we will do everything possible and impossible to resolve this problem quickly," he said.
He also warned that stopping the flow of foreign investment to the region would make it "very difficult" to carry out necessary reforms.
