Tension in eastern city following arrests of pro-Russia protesters
There were tense scenes in Ukraine's eastern city of Donetsk on Thursday as several dozen pro-Russia protesters were detained during a police operation to clear demonstrators from the regional administration centre.
The building had been occupied by pro-Russian protesters since Wednesday evening and was taken over by police on Thursday.
Protesters in the ethnic Russian stronghold demanded a referendum for greater autonomy in the region.
Some called for union with Russia.
"We are all Russians, we are slavic. We want to live in a big, strong country, not in the divided thumb of one arm," one local resident said.
Meanwhile on Thursday, lawmakers in Crimea unanimously declared they wanted to join Russia and would put the decision to voters in 10 days.
Russian lawmakers pushed a bill to facilitate a handover.
The EU announced limited punitive measures against Russian President's Vladimir Putin's government, including the suspension of trade and visa talks, and the US said it was imposing travel restrictions on opponents of Ukraine's new government.
Both were discussing further sanctions.

It got so bad here that when people realised what was going on they took to the streets. We haven't had anything like that in the region for the past 20 years. It is only in Kiev that they fight constantly."
