USA: APOLLO 17 ASTRONAUTS US SPACE PROGRAMME PRESS CONFERENCE
The last two men to walk on the moon think we should go back there -- and beyond.
Apollo 17 astronauts Gene Cernan and Jack Schmidt say the future lies in deep space.
The two men were in Washington on Thursday to discuss what they believe needs to be done to get the U-S space programme back on track.
This week marks twenty five years since the Apollo 17 crew landed on the moon.
Despite what some would call modest advances in space exploration since that time, the Apollo crew was the last to step on the moon's surface.
A quarter of a century later, many of those involved in that mission say they're disappointed by the sluggish pace of the American space programme.
Eugene Cernan, commander of the Apollo 17 says he gets tired of being called the last man to walk on the moon.
He thinks others should follow in his footsteps.
Cernan says after talking to people born in the 25 years since the last manned moon landing, he believes the new generation will blaze a new trail into space.

"For 25 years I've had the dubious, and perhaps disappointing honour of being dubbed the last man to have left his footprints on the surface of the moon. It's certainly a fact, disappointing perhaps because it has been 25 years and we haven't gone back. There's always going to be one first man on the moon and that's Neil Armstrong, but there's going to be lots and lots of last men and women who follow."

The Lunar Module pilot of the Apollo 17 mission, Jack Schmidt, is a geologist.
He advocates going back to the moon because it contains alternative sources of energy that could be used to send humans to the planets.
He also says the technology now available makes space exploration much more feasible than it was 25 years ago.

"We do not have, after 30 years of space flight, either we nor the former Soviet Union, the Russians, have an adequate - even a scientifically credible understanding of human adaptation to space. We have blown that one. We just have not had a credible programme, we still don't have a credible program, but with the space station, we at least have the option of creating a credible programme."

Cernan said that to repeat previous conquests was not enough - he believes the U-S should aim for new goals beyond those already achieved.

"I happen to believe that we cannot afford not to go back in the exploration mode, and go back to the moon, and on to Mars. What I think we really need is a major, major goal somewhere out there in the future, and you can pick a year, twenty years down the road or a generation down the road which says we ought to land humans on Mars and build an infrastructure which will allow us to get there."

It remains to be seen whether the U-S will expand its space programme to allow scope for bigger and better exploration in the future.
