- Byline: Martens,Conrad (1801-1878), The Beagle in Ponsonby Sound, 1836. As the artist who accompanied Charles Darwin for a time aboard the HMS Beagle, Conrad Martens recorded firsthand many of the places and sights encountered on the ship's voyage of discovery. Charles Darwin commissioned this watercolour of Jemmy Button waving farewell to the Beagle. Four native Fuegians of the Yaghan (or Yamana) tribe from islands around Tierra del Fuego, in modern Chile and Argentina, including "Jemmy Button" (Orundellico), were brought to England by Captain Robert FitzRoy on the first voyage of the Beagle in 1830. They were taken to meet the King and Queen in London and were to an extent celebrities. The surviving three returned to Tierra del Fuego aboard the Beagle with Charles Darwin, who made extensive notes about his visit to the islands. Categories: WATERCOLOUR
