ストーリー

With about two months to go before the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic, Japan is still grappling with such problems as controlling the number of spectators, allocating medical resources and protecting volunteers against the fourth wave of coronavirus infections in the country that has forced several areas to declare a state of emergency.

The starting point for the Tokyo Olympic marathon and race walking will be at Odori Park in Sapporo, under the condition that if everything goes well as scheduled.

The course for the marathon and race walking was decided last year and test events were held in May. Since early April, Japan has started the lawn mowing in the park.

Although rehearsal activities have been held to test the supporting facilities along the course like ambulance routes, the Tokyo organizing committee is yet to reveal all the details necessary to ensure a safe competition in Sapporo.

"There are no specific guidelines on how to control the number of spectators for the official Games. We will consider taking relevant measures according to the decision of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee. The committee just put forward the overall plan, but it must explain the specific protective measures in Sapporo. We still haven't received the specific information yet and hope that the committee can inform us as soon as possible to avoid negatively impacting the health care system in Sapporo," said Satoshi Okuki, director of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games at the Sapporo Sports Bureau.

Although Tokyo organizing committee officials have said that the declaration of emergency would not affect the Olympics, all of Japan are still worried about the same health resources that Sapporo is worried about, since the country is facing the high number of new COVID-19 cases each day while has a low vaccination rate of 2 percent. Currently only around 4 percent of its population has received at least one dose.

The Tokyo organizing committee expects to recruit about 80,000 volunteers to do a variety of services. But unlike the athletes and relevant staff who will have regular nucleic acid tests and a strictly restricted activity range, volunteers are facing higher risks for coronavirus.

There are no measures in place for the volunteers and other Japanese staff who will be in daily contact with athletes, according to the latest version of the IOC's epidemic prevention manual.

The IOC, the Tokyo organizing committee, Tokyo government and other relevant parties will meet in June to decide on more details related to the Olympics.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympic is to take place from July 23-August 8 and the Paralympic Games is to take place from Aug 24-Sept 5.
