Tracking shot of Queen exiting church and getting into royal car, followed by Prince Andrew LEADIN: Britain's Prince Andrew turns 60 on Wednesday (19th February 2020) and despite the ongoing controversy over his friendship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the UK is set to mark the occasion by raising Union Jacks above town halls as it does with all royal birthdays. Andrew pulled out of public duties in November last year amid a firestorm of criticism over his friendship with Epstein and allegations of sexual encounters organised by Epstein with an American woman, Virginia Roberts Giuffre. STORYLINE: Prince Andrew was born at Buckingham Palace on 19 February 1960. His birth marked the first time that a child had been born to a reigning monarch for 103 years. In the 1960s and 70s the Royal Family regularly invited film crews to capture them enjoying walks around Frogmore House. Andrew attended school at Heatherdown Preparatory School in Ascot and later Gordonstoun in Scotland, like his father and older brother Prince Charles. He became a helicopter pilot for the Royal Navy, creating a dashing image for the young prince. In 1981 he was awarded his pilot's wings by his father, the Duke of Edinburgh. He married Sarah Ferugson in 1986 and the couple's relaxed style was embraced as helping to refresh the image of the monarchy. However the marriage didn't last and they separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996. The couple remain close and have two daughters Beatrice and Eugenie. The Duke of York continued his naval career and even visited an Argentinean naval base in 1994 - he had fought as a helicopter pilot in Britain's 1982 Falklands War with Argentina. He later became a UK Trade Envoy in 2001, but was forced to step down because of a string of unfortunate acquaintances. He played host to Sakher el-Materi, the 29-year-old son-in-law of Tunisia's deposed president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali shortly before a popular uprising overthrew the leader. He also had ties to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's regime and was friends with billionaire US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew drew criticism for reportedly taking lavish trips in his role as an unpaid trade ambassador. In 2018 he attended the opening of Britain's first permanent military base in the Middle East in more than four decades in the Persian Gulf country of Bahrain, giving the UK an expansive presence along key international shipping routes. The Duke of York and Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa were on-hand for the ceremony in Salman Port. Prince Andrew gave his daughter Princess Eugenie away at her wedding in St George's Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle in October 2018, which was attended by senior members of the Royal Family. Her sister, Princess Beatrice is set to get married on May 29th this year. Prince Andrew announced in November 2019 that he was pulling out of public duties “for the foreseeable future” amid a firestorm of criticism over his friendship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Up until then the Prince had lived a life in front of the world's cameras. An American woman, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, claims to have had had several sexual encounters with the prince at Epstein's behest, starting when she was 17. The FBI wants to question the prince as part of its Epstein investigation, but a U.S. prosecutor said in January that Andrew had been uncooperative. The prince denies wrongdoing. Andrew was recently see alongside Queen Elizabeth II as they attended Mass at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Hillington, near Sandringham on 19th January, hours after Buckingham Palace announced details of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex' official separation from the royal family. Earlier this month (February 2020) the British government said it was reviewing the policy of raising Union Jacks atop town halls on royal birthdays, after some officials balked at flying the flag for scandal-hit Prince Andrew. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government however sent an email to local authorities reminding them to fly the flag for Andrew's 60th birthday on February 19. ==== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com.
