Wuhan residents flock to temple to pray for luck and health in 2021

Date:JANUARY 1, 2021 Hundreds of people in Wuhan visited a popular local Buddhist temple on Friday (January 1) to pray for good luck and health in 2021, with many saying they hope the COVID-19 pandemic comes to an end soon so their lives return to normal.
"I hope that Wuhan can get better and better and I hope that the epidemic will be over soon so that everyone can remove their masks and go to the places they want to go to," said 28-year-old Wuhan resident Xixi.
The COVID-19 pandemic, which has so far left more than 1.8 million dead and infected more than 82.9 million people according to a Reuters tally, is believed to have originated in Wuhan in late 2019. A team of experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) is scheduled to arrive in China in early January for a long-awaited mission to look into the origins of the coronavirus.
On a cool and sunny New Year's Day, Wuhan locals and tourists burned incense, prayed, paid respects and hit large bells at the city's sprawling Guiyuan temple. By late morning a queue several hundred long had formed and snaked around the perimeter of the temple's walls, with many near the back expecting to wait more than hour to get in. Traditionally many people in China visit temples on the first day of both the western calendar year and the lunar new year, not just Buddhists.
There was a heavy security presence outside the entrance and inside the complex plain clothes security personnel could be seen at various points. All visitors were required to wear masks.
