ストーリー

Date:JUNE 20, 2020 French protesters on Saturday (June 20) gathered in the northern city of Lille to demand the razing of the statue of a 17th-century general who played a role in the colonisation of Algeria.
Led by activist group Survie, dozens of protesters urged the removal of the monument of Louis Faidherbe, who was also governor of Senegal under Napoleon III and was accused of burning African villages and massacring people.
The demonstration was met with counter-protesters who stood by a police line near the statue and chanted: "This is our place."
Outcry over statues of historical figures who participated in slavery has been growing worldwide since the killing of George Floyd by a police officer in the United States sparked international protests.
Protesters in the United States, Britain and Belgium have targeted statues of historic figures associated with slavery or colonialism.
Other statues in France have been singled out by Black rights activists, but French President Emmanuel Macron said last week France would not erase the statues from its national history.
The Lille demonstration happened at the same time as another anti-racism protest in Paris, which saw hundreds marching in the capital's streets.
"We're saying that France can build up its glory but not in our name and not by injuring our dignity," Paris protester Franco Lollia said. "It's a question of dignity."

"In France, we have public spaces, statues, schools, streets, boulevards that are named after and which celebrate the faces of French colonialism. And this is not at all being recognised in France. This debate needs to be tackled once and for all so that authorities understand our demands."

(SOUNDBITE) (French) OPPONENT OF REMOVAL OF STATUE WHO DECLINED TO GIVE HIS NAME, SAYING:
"I thought it was normal to oppose this intention since it's not normal to want to destroy the French heritage in the name of a minority of people for a historical era that has evolved."

"Mr. (President Emmanuel) Macron has done nothing but institutionalise racism in a structural manner, especially 'negrophobia,' by making us believe that those who want to take down the statues are separatists. You see, we're the bad Indians, the barbarians, the cannibals, and he is automatically Steve McQueen, the kind cowboy who's coming to save the widow and the orphan. And so, we're saying that France can build up its glory but not in our name and not by injuring our dignity. It's a question of dignity."
