ストーリー

Thanks to China's sophisticated health care system, the majority of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) patients in the country are effectively treated, said an expert of the World Health Organization (WHO) at the press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday.

Micheal Ryan, Executive Director of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, noted that the epidemic has put forward extremely high requirements on the medical standards of various countries and China's sophisticated health care system has taken action timely and saved a large number of patients.

"The health system in China is sophisticated and is capable of delivering high levels of intensive care and when you consider that 90 to 100 percent of patients in hospital require supplemental oxygen, 20 to 25 percent of those patients require intensive care, and 5 to 10 percent of patients may require some form of mechanical ventilation - that's a huge demand on a system. So it's a tremendous achievement that so many patients can be kept alive," said Ryan.

According to the data released by the WHO, as of 06:00 on Monday, 319 patients have been diagnosed with the disease in 24 countries outside China, and over 40,000 cases found in China.

WHO said that a majority of the patients in China have mild symptoms and the severe patients have received effective treatment.

Ryan said the epidemic prevention would be less effective in some area with weaker health system.

"Imagine this disease establishing itself within a weaker health system without those capacities, without those capabilities. So that's what we've been calling for. This disease may appear relatively mild in the context of sophisticated health system. That may not be the case should this disease reach a system that is not as capable as that of China," he said.

The WHO said that China provides a window period for international community to enhance epidemic prevention mechanism. The organization will hold a global research and innovation forum on the epidemic in Geneva on Tuesday and Wednesday to coordinate global scientific research efforts, determine research priorities, aiming to find targeted diagnosis and treatment programs and vaccines as soon as possible.
