ストーリー

Patients with mild symptoms of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) are receiving treatment at one of the three temporary hospitals set up in Wuhan.

At a cultural building complex dubbed the "Wuhan Livingroom", medical workers have been working around the clock on four shifts, each lasting six hours.

The temporary hospital has a capacity of housing 2,000 patients.

"We left the hotel at 06:40, came here at 07:30 to put on the suits. The shift starts at 08:00, ends at 14:00. Now it's after 14:00, because we need to wait for the others to take off their suits first," said Wang Xiaodong, a nurse and member of the National Emergency Medical Rescue Team from east China's Anhui Province.

Health experts say there is no risk of cross-infection between patients, but medical workers attending to at least 600 patients must exercise caution.

"My colleagues take care of each other. They check to see if the gear is still intact. After we come in contact with the patients, we wash our hands," said Cai Lizhou, a nurse, also a member of the National Emergency Rescue Team from east China's Fujian Province.

Taking care of hundreds of patients in the sweltering protective suits isn't easy.

Experts say shelter hospitals might not be the perfect plan but are currently the most practical. They reduce cross-infection, especially among these patients' families.

A 56 year-old patient surnamed Zhang went to the facility on Friday, and he sees an improvement.

"I feel much better. I haven't had a high fever for days. I may have just a low one now," said Zhang.

In another area of the venue, a female patient in her 50s was telling her family over the phone that she feels lucky to be here.

"At first, I was shocked to know the diagnosis. I was terrified and cried all night. Then I came here and met my ward mates. Medical workers have treated us patients well. I feel much safer and I think we are going to live," said the patient surnamed Xin.

The city has converted three existing public venues, also including the Hongshan Gymnasium and the Wuhan International Conference and Exhibition Center, into hospitals with a total of 3,400 beds available to meet the needs of infected patients.
