The city of Wuhan is planning on quarantining all suspected cases and isolating all confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) in order to control the virus.
Due to a shortage of hospital beds, public buildings across the city are being turned into temporary medical centers.
It's been two weeks for Wang Dinghen, the vice principal of a district Party School in Wuhan, to live with suspected coronavirus patients, as the school has been converted into a quarantine quarters.
A total of 75 people suspected of infected with coronavirus are living there. School staff have to do all the chores to keep the quarantine point in check, removing trash and sterilizing the living quarters.
"Our school is now only a quarantine point for medical surveillance. We only take in suspected cases, but we cannot offer much in terms of medical treatment," said Wang Dinghen, vice principal of Hongshan District Party School.
For those who are diagnosed with having the virus, they will be transferred to hospitals. But due to the lack of hospital beds, Wuhan is now converting public buildings into hospitals and medical centers to take in patients with mild symptoms. This includes dorms from the Wuhan Business University, which are now being modified.
"First, we have to classify students' belongings in the dorm and seal them up for storage. All dorms have been cleared up. The beds are all modified by workers overnight to make the room more like a four-patient room in a ward," said Lang Xianmei, a staff member of Wuhan Business University.
Some 2,400 confirmed coronavirus patients are expected to move in. And some daily supplies have already been put inside rooms which have been converted. The construction team said wastewater pipes had also been modified to prevent contamination.
Besides schools, hotels have also been converted into quarantine centers. Wuhan Miliang Yangtze River Hotel is the first and largest concentration quarantine center in Hanyang District, which is responsible for receiving people who have close contacts with confirmed patients.
The quarantine center has received a total of 172 people for medical surveillance with 23 already released from quarantine and five transferred to hospitals.
The medical staff closely attend to people quarantined there, paying close attention to their health and sending three meals to them every day.
To receive more people, another quarantine center 100 meters away from the hotel started operating on Saturday. It has over 100 rooms and has received 70 people who had close contacts with confirmed patients.
