ストーリー

Doctors and nurses of the Wuhan Union Hospital have been braving the deadly novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) to treat many severe cases.

A building in the West District of Wuhan Union Hospital has been converted into level-3 protection quarantine wards for treating seriously ill coronavirus patients.

For safety reasons, whatever goes inside the wards needs to stay inside.

"I even bought a new phone to use inside the quarantine areas. But I would never dare take it out, unless the epidemic was over. Then I will mount it onto the wall as a souvenir," said Jin Yang, Vice President of the Wuhan Union Hospital.

A CGTN reporter was let inside with a GoPro camera on Feb. 7, which had to be put into disinfectant for a whole day after filming.

The doctors and nurses have to wear two layers of protective gowns, hand gloves, shoe covers, face masks and goggles before entering the special wards. They have to work six hours in this way without rest. They can't drink, eat or even use the toilet.

Some nurses are suffering skin problems for wearing face masks and goggles for long periods of time. Nurse Lyu Wen had to cover the wounds with gauze before putting on a face mask.

"My face is wounded. Lots of blisters under this. I have to put on this, or I can't wear the face masks. It's too painful," said Lyu.

"The hospital bought adult diapers for us," said nurse Zhang Fang, who said they normally would wear them every day while working, because they don't go to the toilet while wearing the protective gowns.

"It's because one protective suit is over 300 RMB. We're trying our best to save them," said nurse Zhu Peipei.

Doctor Tang Xin hasn't been home for two weeks.

"I've just inserted a catheter into a patient. Now I have to take off the third layer of gloves," he told reporter after taking care of a patient.

Tang said the severely ill patients need special care.

"The most difficult thing is when the patient's symptoms get worse, they gradually lose consciousness. It makes medical treatment like using a ventilator or injection much more difficult," said Tang.

The bells for help of the patients kept ringing, and the nurses had to rush to attend to them all the time.

Changing diapers for the patients is part of nurse Zhu Peipei's job.

"After six hours of work, lots of nurses need to inhale oxygen," said Zhu.

The doctors have had to separate themselves in hotels from their families. When talking about her 3-year-old daughter, Zhu's voice trembled.

"I haven't seen her in two weeks. I really, really miss her. I go back to the hotel very late. When I want to see her on video chat, she's already asleep," she said.

After six hours of intensive work, Doctor Tang Xin was finally able to take off his protective gear. He has a rash all over his body.

"Inside the quarantine wards, I'm too busy to feel itchy. But now after coming out, I'm very itchy. The rash takes six to eight hours to go away," said Tang.

Medical workers in Wuhan are facing mounting pressure. But Tang believes the future is bright.

"The Pandora's box has been open, unleashing the disaster, fear and illness. But there could be one thing still left in the box. That's hope. As long as hope is there, we shall overcome [the difficulty]," said Tang.
