ストーリー

Three newborns, whose mothers have been confirmed or highly suspected to have been infected with novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP) before delivery, are under observation recently in the neonatal intensive care unit (ICU) of the Wuhan-based Tongji Hospital.

Chen Ling, professor of pediatrics of the Tongji Hospital, said the obstetrics and pediatrics departments work closely together for these mothers and infants.

“As to the health of the newborns, the pediatricians made evaluations at the obstetrics department at the time of delivery, and then transferred them to the isolation ward. After delivery, the doctors first made judgments on the babies’ physical health, and then closely monitored their temperature and breathing, and did nucleic acid tests,” said Chen Ling, professor of pediatrics of the Tongji Hospital.

One of the infants has been in the hospital for six days. Chen said his mother had intermittent fever for 12 days before delivery, and her gestational weeks were 41 plus two days. His father had a fever at the same time.

“The mother's conditions had worsened two days before being admitted to the hospital and an emergency cesarean section was done. Today is the sixth day after the operation, the infant was given medication for protection, and necessary tests were carried out, especially nucleic acid test. A total of two tests are required within 24 hours and the next day after delivery, both of which indicated negative. While his mother is suffering from a very typical NCP case from the clinical manifestation and lung conditions. Through two nucleic acid tests, his mother’s test results also indicate negative,” said Chen.

The three infants are kept in isolation under observation, which requires 14 days. They are currently in good health and have negative nucleic acid test results. The mother-to-child vertical transmission has yet to be determined, according to doctors.
