- Aerial view of ships in the Battle of Midway 4th June 1942 - This was the most decisive single naval battle in US history leaving two heavy Japanese aircraft carriers against four US carriers. It also cost the Japanese veteran pilots whose replacements required a full year of training. Furthermore, the Imperial Japanese Navy lost the secret of its Zero fighter, leading to certain improvements of the US F6F Hellcat fighter, which would, just a year later, destroy Japanese air supremacy. The Battle of Midway enabled the US Navy to go into the offensive. If all three US carriers had been destroyed in the battle, the remaining ones could not hope to last in battle against the Japanese carrier fleet. The Battle of Midway reversed this totally by preventing the Japanese Navy from operating offensively while the Americans could do so at their own initiative. ｩ2005 TopFoto (Photo by TopFoto/AFLO)
